‘Storm of Arranon’ by R.E. Sheahan – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / July 29, 2014

This tale is just about as “wild” as the book cover! The story begins with Erynn in a classroom – a beginning to a brief yet effective foundation – then propels from that point on into dynamic novel. In the setting of two different planets -Korin and Arranon – this Sci-Fy novel is an interesting culmination of strange words, strange animals, strange sounding food, and a slightly strange transport system, yet, fairly common lifestyles, attitudes and general population. These are all well portrayed and easily visualized. The characters developed are very real in an effective variety most all can relate to in some way. There was plenty of action, scene changes, and thought patterns to hold the reader’s interest, but for me, it all felt slightly disconnected art times to rate a five stars rating…the “flow” at times seemed disrupted. However, I feel this would be a truly great movie, even as a stand alone. Although it is written as a series, the ending is as such the reader is fulfilled and has a sense of conclusion. The book cover is a little excessive yet bright, and colorful depicting the story line very well. The Title is equally “fitting”. My…

‘Texas Roads’ (A Miller’s Creek novel) by Cathy Bryant – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / July 28, 2014

Leaving a disgruntled mother behind to visit an aunt she has never met, Dani was anxious to arrive at the quaint country town where life could be more peaceful. Just about the time she felt her life could not be more upsetting, she ran out of gas. It was cold, raining and the road was full of ruts. she was not dressed for a jog down this rutted road. A dilapidated truck with a grungy dressed man stopped to assist. It was either take a chance with him or with the coyotes. Their time together did not end well as he quickly dropped her off at a hardware store. This is a sometime amusing, sometimes frustrating and yet sentimental, “tear-jerking”tale of individuals who have suffered immense loss coping with those losses in various ways. It is an account of a community over  hundred years old struggling to survive.  Within these ages are grief, trust, friendship, hope, relationships, forgiveness, acceptance, resourcefulness and love. Christians will love it as well as others will. The story is well-written and captivating. The only slight negative is – for me- the drama was slightly too extensive. The Book Cover and Title were fine and…

‘Dream Warriors’ (A Joey Cola novel) by D. Robert Pease
Fantasy , Young Adult Books / July 26, 2014

There is a world that lies just beyond consciousness…the world in which dreams are created. This is a world that can be controlled by our will…or can it? This fast paced story is of an exceptional boy in a dysfunctional family. His jealous older siblings often make his life miserable. He has a close relation to his mother and his best friend Alex. These are two friends he can always count on.  Joseph faces his struggles an strives to overcome them until he can leave.  His dreams become a new dimension for him. There is plenty of action with a slight touch of romance with a surprise ending. This is the beginning of a series that is sure to be a “hit” with YA everywhere. Especially perfect for 10 and older. The Characters depicted are “colorful” and most seem very real. The background scene are described in a way the reader can easily picture the various areas and situations. The Title and book cover are both very attention getting and representative of the content within. Parents need not worry about inappropriate material – there is no sexual situations, no bad language and the violence is not excessive nor graphic. My…

‘The Dragon and the Firefly’ by Hal Malchow – Book Review by LAWonder10
Young Adult Books / July 24, 2014

For one who is not profoundly “into” dragons, this story totally captivated my interest. This is a sequel to ‘The Sword of Darrow’ of which I haven’t yet read…but I will soon. although it refers to the Darrow series it was still easy to pick up the storyline. The Twins relationship is very endearing yet has both as strong, confident, individual personalities. The tale slowly increases in content and action. It steadily builds, then evens out then builds again…. One situation leading into another. It is a story of an era – the “dark ages” – when one kingdom conquering another was ongoing. It was a time where royalty trained from early years in all the skills of battle in preparation of future years when inevitably they would have to defend their country alongside other warriors. The twin sister had a very unusual pet..a very old one. Princess Aster made sure her pet was exercised regularly. A deceitful evil force was abounding and conquering. Fenn went with his army in effort to protect another kingdom . When Aster lost communication with him, she went on her own t try to find him and help him. The book tells of both…

‘Brothers, Bullies and Bad Guys’ & ‘Sinners, Survivors and Saints’ by N.D. Richman – Book Review by LAWonder10

Okay… This appears to be a book for YA guys, but girls – trust me – you will enjoy this too! This is a very unusual story about two brothers and several supporting characters. The tale begins with two brothers and their parents but steadily encompasses several more key characters – both good ones and bad ones. It is easy for youth to follow as the action just keeps adding more characters and more action. It is fast-paced and will keep the reader’s interest to the very end. The end is powerful and leaves the reader’s anxious to “dig into” the next of the series. The Siblings are as different as night and day yet are closely bonded. Most youth can relate to the rivalry yet love of other siblings. Youth will also relate to the various feelings and adventure of those in the story. The Title and Cover of the book could not be more perfect! It depicts the main points of the story and is very appealing and eye-catching to adventurous youth. The characters are easily visualized as are the surrounding background scenes. This is especially great for youth 10 – 18 years of age. There are…

‘The Christmas Owl’ by Angela Muse – Book Review by LAWonder10
Children's Books / July 21, 2014

What a wonderful addition for Holiday reading! The tale begins with an injured owl needing refuge. He visits several fellow creatures. Will they help him? Read and discover the answer for yourself. Key issues in this story is trust, understanding, sharing, gratitude and giving. The story is in partial rhyme. It would have been more effective if it had been in total rhyme with the same rhythm in stanzas. However, it still is an effective, entertaining story for toddlers and young elementary age children. Angela Muse is a very talented upcoming children’s author. The illustrations are beautifully done by talented Helen H. Wu. My review of this book gives it a strong Four Stars rating. *I was gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review, of which I have given. PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON HERE! If I had not personally known of famous individuals who truly had a giving, genuinely caring, unselfish attitude, I would have deemed this book as too Pollyanna-ish.  But, truly, there are very wealthy people…

‘Twisted Fate: Three Stories of Suspense’ by Traci Hunter Abramson, Greg Luke, Stephanie Black – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / July 9, 2014

I am a huge fan of all these three authors but I feel Stephanie Black’s creative juices were lacking slightly. The plot in ‘Haunting Reminders’ seemed somewhat “stuck in a mire” .  It was though she stretched out the story in an unsteady way. The plot idea was good it just needed more “fill in” and better delivery. It still was interesting. Both Gregg Luke and Traci Abrams were in full force with the energy and intensity of their novella’s plots. In Gregg Luke’s ‘Death House’, the reader was kept on edge until the end. This would be a great tale for Halloween night. It bordered on creepily surreal. The intensity lessened toward the end. In ‘Hunted’, Traci Abramson steadily builds the drama and intrigue. The action develops well into the story. It slowly dwindles to a conclusion. They all did well in character development and the surrounding background scenes. One could feel oneself caught in the adventures with the main characters. The title is applicable but the book cover – although effective – is too dark to be eye-catching. On a whole, It definitely deserves a Four Stars rating.   PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON HERE! [raw] [/raw]

‘Hey Warrior Kids! Grab Your Slingshot’ by Virginia Finnie – Book Review by LAWonder10
Children's Books , Inspirational / July 7, 2014

This is a great way for parents/leaders to teach the story of David and Goliath from the Bible. the story also refers the young readers to modern day Goliaths and how one can best approach them. There are great tools all can have which can be just as effective as David’s slingshot and stone. This is another compelling book for young children and readers in the Hey Warrior Kids! series. The illustrations are simple but well done by Katie Brooks. Due to a slight simplification of some of the solution inside the story, my review of this book offers a Four Stars rating. *This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review, of which I have given.   PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON HERE! ‘THE FINAL SUMMIT: A Quest to Find the One Principle That Will Save Humanity’ by Any Andrews – Book Review by LAWonder0
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / July 5, 2014

This is a great book to inspire on in search of answers to life’s problems. Although it is more of a narrative than an actual story, it presents a lot of historical figures in debating main issues. It is a lesson in history, in debate, in key events wrapped up in fantasy. The characterizations were humorous & descriptive in an unique way. I listened to this book on CDs. The author – Andy Andrews – added effectiveness in the marvelous manner he created the voices on the CDs. He did an excellent job of portraying various individuals.I feel the conclusion of the story will surprise most.Because of the discussion matter, plus Andrews effectiveness in presenting this information, I felt it is important enough to rate it with a Four Stars Book Review rating. He was rescued at the seashore when he was a tiny baby and had been raised in this disgusting palace courtyard academy ever since. He had no friends and even he teacher seemed to hate him. He had one possession that was his from the beginning…a ruby ring…Up until it was taken from him! This is an incredible tale of a very unhappy group of children in a very unhappy Kingdom. There were a couple of very good points made – One is that although given a certain “lot in life” one does not have to succumb to it. I am not a fan of Illustrator Richie Vicencio’s cartoon-like illustrations, but I never was one who enjoyed reading most cartoons. My Review of this book offers a Four Stars rating on content. *I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review, of which I have given. PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON HERE! The Insider’ by Sian Ann Bessey/CD read by Aubrey Warner
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / July 3, 2014

When (Sarah Larsen) was assigned to Hawaii to accompany the Senator and some Staff members she was very surprised, confused but elated… that is before she discovered her assignment! Ben Cooper had a devastating interaction with his boss immediately on his first day of work after a two month long assignment in Afghanistan. He immediately left for Utah to the place his twin brother lived with his four-year-old daughter Zoe, only to discover an equally devastating set of events. Now he must do all he can to set the whole situation aright. He would work out the details later. This is a well-written, fast-paced novel written in the usual compelling style of Sian Ann Bessy. It is a Suspense/Adventure novel which captivates its reader from the very beginning. It smoothly flows from one character’s narrative to another.  Her characters vary and are well defined. The surrounding scenes are descriptive and easily imagined. / The Title is very fitting and the book cover is interestingly unique but is not very eye-catching and, in my opinion, not very applicable to the main idea of the story. It easily fits into a Christian Fiction category. The Narrator, Aubrey Warner did a truly…

‘Destiny’ is an Incredibly Captivating First Novel by Author Cindy Ray Hale!
Young Adult Books / July 2, 2014

A Superlative First Novel- ‘Destiny’ – by Accomplished Author, Cindy Ray Hale! The whole story covers a mere two to three month time period in the lives of Isaac Robinson and Destiny Clark. The author has effectively delivered the locution of each individual’s view. Although much of book is day to day activates and thoughts of each, it is never boring.  Quite the opposite…the the reader attention is captivated from beginning to end. He/She becomes so enthralled in this poignant rendition, that it is nearly impossible to put it down! It is quite conclusive at the end, but what a disappointment it would be if there were not more books in the series. This is a coming-of-age story filled with self-discovery, longing, drama, intrigue, romance and personal standards and values. It is a very realistic Christian fiction. The supporting characters are equally dazzling and engaging. The scenes portrayed “come alive” and pulls the reader into the tale. The Book Cover lacks in eye-appeal yet contains a certain relativity to the story. The title lacks the attention it could capture if it contains a further hint of the “meat” of the story. My review of this book gives a strong  Five…

The House at the End of Hope Street’ by Menna Van Prag – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books / July 1, 2014

The House at the end of Hope Street is an interesting combination of fantasy, contemporary, historical, & paranormal fiction. It is a unique story of different individual’s lives…Lives usually despairing who obliviously find them selves on Hope Street. I won this through an Early Reviewer Program The Library Thing conducts each month.  It is not recommended for seventeen year old or younger.  There are a few “F” bombs, some sexual situations  -although not explicit – and has subject matters not appropriate for the younger generations. I was surprised when I learned the author lives with a son and a husband. Throughout the story I felt an undercurrent of hostility toward men and the marriage institution. As with many books in this generation, love is shamefully mistaken by sexual attraction. Yes, that attraction must be there to develop a strong marriage and commitment, but it is often backwards. AFTER one falls in love, that bond can  be strengthened – after marriage commitment is solemnized – with the intimate sexual act. The writing was done quite well. The characters were well-defined and realistic. Surrounding scene images were clearly depicted. There were even moments of clever humor.  The Title was well assigned but…
