WAR & DEVASTATION! IN HONOR OF THOSE SERVING IN TIMES OF WAR, I AM DEDICATING THE WEEK (12/01 TO 12/06/2014) TO THEM!
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / November 29, 2014

IN HONOR OF THE FORTHCOMING ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF PEARL HARBOR , DECEMBER 6, 1941, AND THE PROCLAMATION OF WORLD WAR 11, I AM DEDICATING THE UPCOMING WEEK’S READING & REVIEWS. I KNOW MANY WILL JOIN ME IN INTERVIEWS AND LEARNING OF BOOKS WRITTEN BY AUTHORS OF EXPERIENCES IN WARTIME. I WILL ALSO BE POSTING REFERENCES TO PAST REVIEWS OF AUTHORS WHO HAVE WRITTEN MEMORABLE BOOKS OF THIS SUBJECT MATTER. I AM BEGINNING WITH THIS REVIEW OF:  Rising From the Shadow of the Sun: A Story of Love, Survival, and Joy by Ronny deJong Synopsis via Goodreads: This is a fascinating chronicle based on the detailed diary of Netty Herman, a courageous Dutch mother, who records the horrors and desperation of life with her two young daughters, Ronny and Paula, in World War II Japanese concentration camps for women and children on Java; and the inspiring story of Ronny’s journey from a childhood in captivity in Southeast Asia in the 1940s to peace and prosperity in the United States in the 21st century. MY REVIEW: Little did Fokko Herman & Jeanette (Netty) Louwerse know when they first met, in August of 1933, what the future would hold….

‘Rare Bird: A Memoir of Loss and Love’ by Anna Whiston-Donaldson – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books / November 27, 2014

First, I want to state I feel this is a subject many, who are suffering the loss of a loved one, needs to read and gain strength from.  I feel when one is grieving, the more one can talk about it and share it with others, the sooner the intensiveness of the pain will heal. This is a real life story of one mother’s struggle with faith, feelings toward God, and with past and present relationships after losing a young son. The first half of the book kept my interest and attention but then it seemed to drag as the author got “hung up” too much on the emotions and attitude. I feel it would have been more effective if she stated her struggle without going into so much repetitive detail. Please do not say, “But you can’t understand!” because I do. I lost a daughter to a car accident on the eve she was to begin her college educational experience. It was devastating! Now , almost 12 years later, we still feel the emptiness of her presence in our lives. In our situation, the family members who could discuss it and frequently talk about it healed faster than the…

It Burns a Lovely Light’ by Penny McCann Pennington – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books / November 27, 2014

It Burns a Lovely Light is a well- written, bittersweet, poignant story about one family’s tragedy’s and “pulling together” during hard times. The story includes additional, interesting characters, as well. After tragedy hits, Farley and her “Special Needs” brother, William, have to live with an aunt who is also struggling with various difficulties. Their time together spans the teenage years of Farley and William.  Many transitions are experienced during that time, yet, this group all become inter-meshed into one another’s lives . This is a captivating interesting tale, with “real life” type of experiences. There were brief occasions it seemed a little excessive but those times were few. The characters were very fun, individual, realistic with interesting interactions. The background scenes were portrayed well. The book cover and Title fits well. I read an earlier edition and prefer the first book cover, but both are good. I just feel the first cover would attract a larger audience. Be aware of a lot of profanity. This is the only reason I did not enjoy this book. There was times a sexual situation was eluded to but never any details, but it would still not be appropriate for a younger YA. My…

‘Davada: Angels & Demons Book 1’ by Tich Brewster – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books / November 27, 2014

Davada by Tich Brewster You will not want to put this book down before it ends! Tich Brewster has definitely created a “page-turner”! Hannah had a comfortable life as an only child, with wonderful parents, and Chris…he is the best best-friend any girl could ever have. She was into her Senior year of High School and would be graduating. She had a part time job which was just a few hours a week which didn’t interfere with her studies or social life. There were two new brothers at school…one seemed nice, the other somewhat a jerk. They seemed to soon want to be friends… Were they genuine or fake? All of her peace and contentment came to a screeching halt one fateful night. This is a fast-paced, “rites of passage” tale. The action and suspense lasts to the very end of the novel. This is a mix if contemporary and fantasy…with a touch of romance. The foundation for the series is set. I have a slight problem with some slight inaccuracies in the scriptural text.  The title was a good “fit” as well as the eye-catching book cover. However, this was very well-written and never failed to keep the reader’s…

Unsouled by Neal Shusterman – Book Review by Sabrina.
Adult Books , Sci-Fi / November 26, 2014

4 stars rating I’m never too excited to jump into these books but once I start reading them I get completely engrossed. I think the thing that gets me about this series is that it seems far fetched and unlikely but as the story progresses and it’s explained how they got to that point it seems like something that could happen in 20 years. The author writes in a way that makes you really think about your views and opinions and brings up some philosophical questions. Unsouled by Neal Shusterman  4 stars I’m never too excited to jump into these books for some reason but once I start reading them I get completely engrossed. ‘Oliver’s Hunger Dragon’ by Sherry Alexander – Book Review by LAWonder10
Children's Books / November 20, 2014

What a delightfully entertaining story for ages 3 to 8! This is a story in rhyming verse about the “hunger dragon” who follows most of us around. It is portrayed in such a fun way that children will love it and find it amusing. Equally attractive to “little ones” are the wonderful dragon illustrations! Amy Rottinger has done an outstanding job of presenting bright, colorful and well drawn characters from the tale. I recommend this book to all libraries/classrooms and personal family libraries for children. This is a wonderful Summer Reading Program Book! PLEASE PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON HERE. ‘Tree of Water’ by Elizabeth Haydon Blog Tour – Book Review by LAWonder10
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / November 19, 2014

CONGRATS TO Marilyn N. THE GIVEAWAY WINNER! I felt remorseful as I began reading the pages of this book. I felt somewhat the way I felt at the beginning of Harry Potter -I dislike that series – and it felt a little too far fetched for me. However, I stuck with it and am pleased I did, because Elizabeth Haydon succeeded in capturing my interest and the last half of the book was really very good. The illustrations of Brandon Dorman perfectly fit the outlandish descriptions of some of the characters. He is to be commended for his talent at drawing and doing so intuitively. At the urgings of Amariel, the merrow, Ven decided to accept her invitation to see the special things she wanted him to see in the ocean. To Ven’s devoted friend, Char’s, dismay. They were in the process of rectifying the problem of how to breathe under water when the gypsy appeared to Ven and produced a better way and further insight. This book is the very unusual trip the three took deep under the ocean surface. There was continuous fascinating experiences and adventures in a place the two youth clearly did not belong. The very…

‘Sometimes the Snow Falls in Summer’ by Deb Troehler book Review By LAWonder 10
Children's Books / November 17, 2014

This is a super fun story that would be perfect for Summer Reading Programs. It is a story of a young girl going for the first time on an airplane for her first visit her grandmother who lives in the country on a farm. It has a brief & simple storyline of preparation of her flight, what to expect at “Nana’s”, and the resulting visit with “Nana”. It is a great early reader for ages 5 to 10. At the end is a fun activity one can do with children. It is recommended each one purchasing this book add ‘Rainbows to Snowflakes’ Activity Book together with this one. They are fully complimentary with a lot more fun activities to do. The watercolor illustrations or sketchy but attractively colorful. My review of this book offers a Four and a Half Stars rating. ‘The Pawnbroker’s Ring’ by Justina Prima Book Review By LAWonder10
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / November 16, 2014

This story takes place beginning in 1830 and continues through decades.. The tale begins at a Pawnbroker’s shop.  It includes a variety of characters and situations created very well so it felt very real. The story from the beginning slowly builds in mystery and suspense until at the end, one feels uplifted and “well-fed” in a literary and spiritual sense. Each character is unique and the reader soon becomes engaged with each situation an circumstance. Be prepared to experience an emotional “roller-coaster”! The author has successfully invoked many conflicting feelings in her readers. This book teaches many great important “life” lessons to each reader some based on Bible stories. My review offers a Five Stars rating. *This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review, of which I have given. PLEASE PURCHASE THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON HERE. [raw] [/raw]

Release Day Blitz for Flury by Tony Bertauski & Giveaway!
Adult Books , Young Adult Books / November 15, 2014

This should put one into the “Winter Mode”! Through Prism Book Tours. We’re celebrating the RELEASE of Flury: Journey of a Snowman By Tony Bertauski An Introduction to Flury Frosty had a magic hat. There was no explanation, just a special hat that turned a pile of snow into a walking, talking best friend. Flury is more than that. And doesn’t smoke. Born on the North Pole, Flury was created by an ancient race of elven that evolved during the Ice Age and continues to live in the polar ice today. Technologically advanced, they sustain themselves with innovation and wisdom. But even the most peaceful settlements encounter danger, such as polar bears. That’s why they invented abominables. What we call snowmen. The life of an abominable doesn’t magically spring from a top hat. The heart of an abominable is a metal orb—an intricately carved sphere that generates an electromagnetic field and builds a body of snow around it. Abominables are intimidating and selfless. They run, they fly. Above all else, they protect. In the late 1800s, Malcolm Toye was part of an arctic voyage that ended in disaster. The survivors of the expedition never saw him again. Malcolm had wandered…

The Bee Bully by Angela Muse – Book Review by LAWonder10
Children's Books / November 12, 2014

The Bee Bully is written in simple, illustrated style for children from, approximately, ages 4 – 9. It is a great teaching tool to discourage bullying from a very young age. However the rhythm of the rhyme could have been slightly smoother and the switch in disposition came too suddenly and not profound enough. Still, parents and educators need all the assistance they can get with the problem of bullying. The sooner a child is taught about this the more effective the teaching will be. The Illustrations are very colorful and adorably expressive. Ewa Podles did a very impressive job with her artwork. My overall rating of this book offers Four Stars. Talented Authors Angela Muse & Ben Muse Interview! Married yet writing separate Genres! What is it like?
Adult Books , Children's Books / November 11, 2014

I am excited to have both husband, Ben Muse and wife, Angela Muse who are very talented authors ! Ben’s new book was released earlier this year, and Angela’s newest book was recently released with perfect timing for Thanksgiving reading for children ages 2-8! Read the reviews on this site! Thety both have other wonderful books published. 1. Ben, you seem like a person who enjoys life.  You are a native Georgian. What was life like growing up in Georgia, i.e. how many siblings did you have, what were some of your activities, hurricanes, etc.? My brother and I were fortunate enough to be blessed with two loving parents who encouraged us in everything we did. I grew up in extremely small town where everyone knew you by your first name. From the age of nine, all the way through high school I was into sports, primarily baseball. I loved to hike and read. Lewis Grizzard was one of my favorite authors growing up. You mention hurricanes. I’ve always been fascinated with weather, but I can’t point to a specific storm that flipped that switch for me. I’m a snow-starved southerner so maybe I was always looking for that…

‘A Christmas Reunion, The Gift of a Second Chance’ by Donna Hatch Book Blitz and Giveaway!

I have not read this book but I do know Donna Hatch is a very talented author! I really am anxious to read this book! You can order the e-book on ‘RELEASE DAY” for ONLY $.99! This Tour is presented by  HAPPY RELEASE DAY FOR A Christmas Reunion, The Gift of a Second Chance by Donna Hatch Available FOR ONLY $0.99 in digital format everywhere ebooks are sold! More About the Book  It’s not part of a series but it might feel like to readers because I seem to be enamored with long lost lovers reuniting, and also with chance meetings at a wayside inn. I’m sure a psychologist would read something into that but hey, I don’t question the muse.I chose the heroine’s name Emily because the root Latin word is Emil, meaning rival. In A Christmas Reunion, there is a rival for the man Emily loves, but it’s not who she thinks. A secondary meaning for Emily is ‘to prevail’ which Emily does and wins back the man she loves, but not in a way she’d ever imagined. First lines of book: Emily unfolded Bennett’s last letter, tempted to burn the harbinger of such sorrow, and read it…
