Eight years after immigrating to the United States, German-born Lukas Ley embodies the American dream: successful athlete, gorgeous girlfriend, loving family. But beneath the surface, eighteen-year-old Lukas is driven by ambition, resolved to avenge the murder of his father at the hands of the Nazi regime. Unfortunately, a failed physical throws his plans for flight school off course. Unlike his war-hero older brother, Lukas’s purpose is unclear. He can’t fly, and in the eyes of the military, he’s good for only one thing—the front lines.

From the foxholes of war-ravaged Luxembourg to the devastation of an enormous German offensive, Lukas’s journey is fraught with peril. But when he’s taken as a prisoner of war, he realizes life is about to get much worse. In the enemy camp, Lukas is viewed as a German fighting for the wrong side. Ripped from the innocence of an idealistic youth, he becomes a man beaten by the horrors of war. Now his only hope of survival is to hold tightly to his faith in God and his love of family and home. But even if he manages to make it out alive, can he ever be whole again?

Lukas Ley dreamed of being a pilot in the Army. The U.S. had joined World War 11 war efforts. His elder brother had  been in the service before the War began and had sent home regular monthly checks until six months ago, when the letters stopped coming. They hadn’t received the dreaded telegram from the War Department so they could only assume he was alive and not Missing in action. It had fallen on seventeen-year-old Lucas to work two jobs before and after school to pay the rent. His mother worked cleaning houses but had fallen ill for awhile.  His next door girlfriend’s father -grieving over the recent loss of his wife and now his son who was in the War- he refused to let Lucas – a dirty kraut- ever be near his daughter again. However, he would secretly meet her and milk the cow for her early each morning unless she gave the signal it wasn’t safe.

The rent was due and there was not enough money. Just when he thought they’d be evicted, life took an “upward turn” and he entered the Army…but that did not turn out as he had expected. The next few years would determine his fate.

This is a terrific tale of loyalty, love, conviction, faith, hardship, endurance, perseverance and discovery of one’s inner strength. A.L. Sowards has brought her character to life, pulled the reader into the story, and caused the reader to connect with the situations and individuals there. The author’s remarkable ability, causes the reader to disregard the somewhat lengthy book, and wanting to read more when it ends. The book is divided into four sections. Maps of the War area where Lucas traveled is included at the beginning of the book. The author’s notes at the end of the story is also interesting.

This is a book you will not want to put down! The cover and title are a good “fit”.

This earns a strong Five Stars rating.
*This book was gifted to me. I was in no way urged to offer a positive review. This is my honest review.
