“My panicked, terrified mind was starting to go numb as I realized I had no escape from the angry tribal natives that were planning to attack my companion and me that night. So this is what it feels like when someone asks you ‘Are yo ready to die for what you believe?'”
Popular youth speaker Ben Bernards recounts tales from his mission in Fiji, weaving stories of drunken mobs, rock bands, and rainstorms with scripture stories and principles learned.
The result: seven eternal truths to train and guide a new generation of missionaries. These valuable lessons will help any missionary prepare for and make the most of his or her eternal mission.
What People Are Saying About “Faith and a Life Jacket”
“I would love to make Ben’s chapter on measuring success required reading for everyone. Too many feel like failures because we allow others to impose unrealistic goals and expectations on us. Ben reminds readers that success can be measured in multiple ways and that we all need to see our efforts through God’s eyes.”

“As a former missionary mom, this book would have answered many questions about missions before my missionaries left. Brother Bernards does not sugar coat the realities of a mission, instead he gives missionaries and their families the reassurance that although the difficulties of missionary life can be overwhelming, there is a loving God who promises to see us through.”

“I love the practical ways we can counter Satan’s influences and become the best vessels of God’s love. This book also offers some much needed advice to teenagers adjusting to the new mission age change. As a dorky, anxious high schooler, I would’ve loved to hear this counsel.”

“Ben Bernards is an extremely engaging youth speaker. He has translated his speaking skills into a wonderful book that will help pre-missionaries become better prepared for the journey that lies ahead. This is a fantastic book! The amazing adventures that Brother Bernards had in his unique mission provide timely advice for today’s teens.”
“Faith and a Life Jacket’ had so many helpful suggestions and tips, especially for a mom like me raising four boys who are working toward their missions. Every parent should read this book which helps teach our children how to become truly converted to missionary work, and to the gospel, for the rest of their lives.”

“This isn’t just another missionary prep book. It is a book to be shared by all members of the family. Bernard’s observations and coping techniques, which he labels “truths,” are not only helpful for anyone preparing for a mission but also for anyone preparing for life. This will serve as an invaluable missionary prep tool as parents review and discuss the life-lessons learned that are not necessarily part of the standard MTC curriculum.

Although there are several reference to L.D.S. scripture, it is easy to understand the meaning of the instances related as in any story. This is a great, inspirational quick read book. It is a great book just for preparation for life. Ben has many entertaining mission experiences. He presents the positive side to serving with faith and the trials which can make this very difficult as well.
One analogy he presented was slightly different than the forging of steel that is often familiar to many of us. He uses the analogy of crafting fine jewelery in describing in what ways God allows us to be tried and tested for a greater Eternal purpose.
This will certainly be enlightening and inspiring for anyone venturing into “the world” on any new and wholesome venture.
This book was sent as a gift. In no manner have I been pressured in anyway to give anything but an honest review.
