Once upon a time . . . It’s how all heroes begin their story, and you’re a hero, too! Your mama has cancer, and it’s a scary journey, but you can help your mama just by being you—special, wonderful, YOU. Your mama loves you just the way you are. You are your mama’s knight.
Mama’s Knight: A Cancer Story of Love is an emotional toolbox that can help kids and parents communicate about what it means for Mama to have cancer. The book is filled with tools and activities designed to make coping with illness easier on both parent and child, and can be personalized for each child.
What a clever, insightful and profound book! This book goes beyond creative!.. It is create to personalize each page. There is places for the child’s name, picture, “likes”, specific treatment plan, symptoms, what makes him/her happy, a chart of activities, favorite recipes, and so much more!
Although it is primarily written for the child whose mother is diagnosed with Cancer, it would equally be effective in helping him/her deal with a sibling or himself/herself who is having to endure the treatments and possible loss of “the Battle”.
The illustrations, also by author, are beautifully done in bright watercolors. The hard book cover and heavier pages are of fantastic quality. This would definitely be a book kept for a lifetime and remembrance for family records.
This is definitely a Five Star rated book for children ages 2-11
*This book was gifted to me but I am in no way required to post anything but an honest review.
Turning Pain Into Healing by Aurora Whittet
In 2013 I lost my mom to uterine cancer and even as an adult the loss was unfathomable. I felt this sense of loss that followed me like a shadow and didn’t feel real. How could the most influential person in my life be gone in one breath?
When my friend Tyson was diagnosed with Brain Cancer and she had two little boys at home I started writing Mama’s Knight: A Cancer Story of Love. Like my mom she had a cancer that didn’t have an endless supply of books to help her explain it to her children. I finally found a way to take my talents and skills and put them to use to transform my grief into something good. So I set out to write a personalizable children’s picture book that any mom with any cancer could use to help her and her family through the journey.
It gives moms places to put in their treatment plan and their symptoms. So no matter if you have to have your head cut open or your breast removed, this book can help you. The book has places for photos of your family, ideas for activities on themamavillage.com, ways to talk about emotions and even coupons to ask for help. I was so very excited about all of the possibilities this book could bring to families, but I’m not an authority on cancer or therapy or children. I’m an author and illustrator and mom. Though I had lost my mom to cancer, I still needed help from experts to make sure the book was exactly what children needed.
I partnered with Amy McNally, MD, gynecological oncology at Minnesota Oncology, David Quale, MD, pediatrician at Wayzata Children’s Clinic, and Michelle Craveiro, MA, LMFT, family therapist at Parkdale Therapy Group so that I knew Mama’s Knight would say the right things in the right ways to help families connect to one another throughout the scary journey of cancer.
My partnerships went one step farther and I donated 150 copies of Mama’s Knight to Minnesota Oncology and another 120 copies to the Angel Foundation, to help get these books into the hands of families that need them.
It has been so rewarding creating this book and taking my pain losing my mom and turning it into something that can truly help shape the journey for families fighting cancer. Helping others has been my path to healing.
