My Writing Journey
I used to write stories as a child. I always knew I wanted to write a novel. After I finished graduate school, I had a hard time finding a job in journalism. While job hunting, I realized I should try and be productive. I was still living at home too, which annoyed me to no end. I think Middle South was my attempt to paint a picture of an independent, employed woman. At the time, I was also reading a lot of women’s fiction and novels like Bridget Jones’ Diary were popular. I thought I could do that too. I’ve always been better at communicating with the written word. And above all else, I love to make people laugh, usually at my own expense.
Currently, I’ve switched gears a bit. I’m writing a memoir about growing up in my family and losing my mother to myelofibrosis. I was raised in Atlanta, but my family is Lebanese. We lived there for a couple of years during the civil war and returned for many summers into my adulthood. The memoir is a series of anecdotal essays from my childhood intertwined with chapters about my mother’s illness and subsequent death. The project started as a way for me to navigate through my grief, but it’s grown into something much larger, and I’m excited about it.
