by Leslie North
Publication date: March 29th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Synopsis:Shiekh Tarek of Zahkim doesn’t believe in superstitions or hunches, so when an old woman tells him an angel will fall from the sky and save him and his tiny kingdom, he ignores such a prophecy—until Tess Angel crashes into his life. Literally. Now he’s struggling with an attraction to this very modern
woman—but her life is worlds away from his own. There’s no chance of a future for them, but in the present moment, he can’t keep his hands off her.
After her jet crashes, Tess Angel is stuck in Zahkim with a gorgeous sheikh, and she has a hunch they could be soulmates. But this sheikh keeps telling her he’s a rational man who doesn’t believe in true love, and while his grandmother is scheming to keep Tess in Zahkim, Sheikh Tarek seems willing to let her go on her way. Can she convince him there’s more to this world than facts and numbers—and that true love can overcome any obstacles?

Tarek Rahim watched as his cousins and friends, Nasim and Arif, leaped with a whoop down the curved steps of the Sheldonian Theatre, their academic gowns flapping behind them. He followed at a more dignified pace.
"We're free, lads!" Nasim shouted.
Tarek shook his head. Happy as he was to have completed his Oxford education, he couldn't quite bring himself to crow. Other graduates laughed and jostled around them, greeting their families, and Tarek pressed his lips together. For a moment, he could only think of his parents. Five years ago, an automobile accident had taken their lives. He wished they could see him now.
Blinking, he pulled himself back to the moment. He could already hear the rattle of shackles coming to bind him to the throne of Zahkim, inherited from his father. His grandmother, Amal, had been acting as regent until he finished his education. Tomorrow he must become Sheikh Tarek of Zahkim, and the thought wasn't appealing.
Nasim jabbed an elbow into his ribs. "We are going to party right up until we have to pour you onto the plane home. Let's get rid of these robes and head to the Sunset Lounge."
Arif chuckled. "You only want to go there because of that bartender who gives you doubles. It's amazing you got your degree, given how much attention you paid to women and drink instead of your studies."
"I had to make up for you," Nasim said, slapping Arif on the back. Tarek smiled. They did tend to give Arif a hard time about his resistance to hedonistic delights.
Tarek thumped his cousin's back as well. "Don't worry, Arif. I'm sure we can find a woman to interest you tonight. It's our last chance in England to live like the English."
An hour later, they crossed the street and headed to the upscale bar they’d made their own over the last four years. Arif had his eyes on his mobile, as usual.
"No phones tonight." Tarek plucked the device from Arif's hand and stuffed it into his own pocket. "Only friends. Who knows when we'll have another chance to do this."
"And no being maudlin," Nasim said.
Tarek straightened into a mock-formal pose. "I am a serious man, Nasim."
Nasim snorted, and Arif said, "Tell that to the first year whose shampoo you replaced with mayonnaise."
They laughed and turned toward the entrance, where chatter and laughter spilled out. The evening was descending, and streetlights flickered on up and down the sidewalk. The peculiar smell of Oxford—something not quite like sour milk—hung in the air. Tarek shivered in a cool gust of wind. He'd never become accustomed to the cold of England. He'd just reached the corner of the building when an old woman stepped from the shadows of an alley and grasped Tarek's wrist.
The woman looked older even than Tarek's grandmother. In the dim light, he couldn't see much but bright blue eyes and wisps of gray hair escaping from the black scarves swathed around her head and shoulders. A baggy dress draped her figure, and she smelled faintly of beer.
"I'll tell your fortune. Such handsome men, such tangled paths…"
"Not tonight, mother." Shaking her off, Tarek reached for his wallet. "No futures. We want only this moment."
But Nasim stepped between Tarek and the old woman. "It's the perfect night—we have only the future ahead of us. Let's hear her out."
Arif frowned and stuck his hands in his trouser pockets. "Do you really want to know? There's more to it than you realize."
Tarek pulled two fifty-pound notes from his wallet and pushed them into the woman's gnarled fist. "Find yourself some food and a place to sleep, mother. I'm not thinking about the future until I must."
She grasped his arm and pulled at him until he had to bend closer. She spoke clearly, but so softly only he could hear. "An angel will fall from the sky and land at your feet, sheikh. She will save your country, but only if you fall at her feet in turn. Trust your instincts, my son."
Tarek stared at her, but she only gave a smile and faded into the gathering night.
Nasim broke the silence with a nervous laugh. "I'm not sure what you just bought."
Tarek hunched a shoulder. How had she known he was a sheikh? Was it a guess because he looked Middle Eastern? What had she meant about saving his country? From what? He shrugged off her words. If his country was on the line, he’d trust his intellect, not his instincts.
Eyes opening, she stared at him. Those eyes of his really were amazing. Tawny like a lion's eyes, the pupils so huge right now she felt she could get lost in their depths. Heat flashed over her skin and left her breathing shallow. She'd never been the type to jump into bed with any man, but something about this guy was getting under her skin.

I love visiting other places by reading a great story with an awesome setting such as this one. Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down.
The characters are well-developed, fun to get to know and it is easy to feel their emotions.
The story is excellent, the cover of the book fit the story perfectly and the title for the story couldn't have been better.
I highly recommend this book to other readers. It has a great story line, romance and plenty of drama to keep you interested.

About the Author
I started writing as a child, really. A few things happened on the way to becoming a published author … a junior high school teacher who told me I couldn’t write because I didn’t want to study … urk … grammar. I went to college, moved a few times, came home and found the love of my life (that is another novel worthy story, but for later), and got married.
We were super busy with our respective careers, mine a custom jewelry business with my mom, who was also teaching metalsmithing at the time, and my husband a crazy law career. We had two fur babies, Fudge (and briefly her brother Smudge, but sadly he didn’t live very long) and Two. Our cats would sleep with us and when they’d stretch out to their full length, we’d end up sleeping on the edge of the mattress.
I have always been a voracious reader and one night after throwing a particularly bad book at the wall (even putting a small ding in said wall), I realized that I could do better. I told my husband, and he said go for it. I called Mom and she revealed the junior high teacher story and she told I’d been writing all the time up to that point.
That blew me away. I didn’t remember any of it. But I started writing again, nearly the next day, pen and paper, learning, making mistakes, winning contests, nearly getting an agent, becoming disenchanted with the publishing industry and moving away from novel writing to screenwriting, getting a contract for a script and doing really well in screenwriting contests.
But none of that was making me much money. After numerous scary robbery drills I wanted to move away from my bank job (yes, this is many years later and a lot of stuff in between) and write full time for the green stuff.
My husband told me repeatedly that independent publishing was becoming a valid way to publish a novel and people were making big dollars. I didn’t believe him even after he showed me several Wall Street Journal articles. I thought indie meant vanity press.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
I started pursuing this direction seriously, retired from the bank and hit the keyboard, learned a litany of new things and published my first novel. My second book became a bestseller, and while I’m not rolling in dough, I’m absolutely on the right course in my life.
So if you have a dream, pursue it as hard as you can. Life can get in the way, but never give up.

Excerpt of Avalanche – Cambria Hebert
Breathing was something my body forgot how to do. An automatic action that suddenly became something so very complicated.
“Liam,” I said, the word low and strained. It used up the very last bit of my oxygen.
His hands flexed again, still holding on to my arms.
That was the problem. The reason my lungs were burning and my sight was blurred. He was touching me.
I wrenched away, nearly tripping. He reached to steady me again, but I made a strangled sound, and he stopped.
The second there was some precious space between us, I sucked in a ragged breath. Then another.
“You’re here,” he rasped.
“You weren’t supposed to be.”
He smiled. Oh, why did he have to do that? The dimple in his chin appeared, and my knees started to shake.
Eight years. Even after eight years, he still reduced me to putty.
“Thought about me, did you?”
Every. Single. Day.
“Of course not.” I drew myself up, wrapping my arms around my body. Oh God, I looked a mess. I was dressed like a homeless person…
Oh God, I was a homeless person.
And I’d come here.
This was a very, very bad choice.
He stepped forward, and I took a step back. Liam frowned, and my eyes raked over his face, taking in his features, noting the way he’d changed over the years.
He was bigger now. So much bigger. His hair wasn’t as long as it used to be. Eight years ago, it was so long he could pull it into a short ponytail at the base of his neck. He said he liked it that way because it drove his father crazy. Now it was shorter on the sides but still long enough to run your fingers through.
His jaw was more chiseled. Light-colored hair filled it out, defined it even more. And his eyes.
Oh, his eyes.
Still the same stormy gray, the same depths I could get lost in for hours. They were wiser now. Almost more hawk-like, as if he could penetrate even my deepest of secrets with that stare.
The trembling in my knees moved to my hands. I stood there staring at him, unable to speak, looking like a homeless woman and trembling like a mouse caught out in the cold.
“Is your father with you?” he asked.
The words were like a knife right to my chest. I actually winced when he said them.
After my throat worked, I managed to reply. “Um, no. I’m alone.”
He frowned. He was starting to see something wasn’t right. He would know if I stood in front of him any longer.
There was something about Liam Mattison that managed to strip me bare.
I thought it had been because I was sixteen. But here I was at the age of twenty-four, and I knew it hadn’t been my age.
It was him.
“Ms. Lane,” the concierge spoke from somewhere behind. “I spoke to the manager, and I’m sorry, but there isn’t anything we can—”
I spun. “It’s okay!” I cut him off instantly, wishing I could have done it sooner.
“Manager?” Liam wondered from behind.
Of course he’d heard.
The man glanced behind me, his eyes widening a fraction.
“What’s this about a manager, Kenny?”
His eyes flickered to me, and I shook my head, begging him to shut up.
“Who runs this place?” Liam snapped.
I gasped. “You run BearPaw now?”
“Yes,” Liam replied with all the confidence in the world.
“What about your father?” Kenny wondered behind us.
“Why did you need a manager?” Liam asked, ignoring what he said.
“I… ah…” I began, then went for my bag I’d dropped on the floor. “I should be going.”
“Like hell,” Liam growled, grabbing my arm again. His hold was firm, but it didn’t hurt.
And damn if I stopped breathing again.
“Please don’t touch me.” I gasped.
Liam frowned but let go. “Stay,” he ordered.

Book Title: From Liberty to Magnolia: In Search of the American Dream by Janice S. Ellis
Category: Adult NonFiction, Genre: Memoir 412 pages
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing | Release date: February 1, 2018
Tour dates: March 19 to 30, 2018
Content Rating: G (No sex scenes and no obscenity)
From Liberty to Magnolia: In Search of the American Dream vividly recounts the journey of an African-American woman from rural, segregated Mississippi through academia, corporate America, and politics. It is the story of how she triumphed even when, more often than not, the ugly realities of racism and sexism tried to deter her.
This book tells the broader story, too, of how her life epitomizes what the Civil Rights Act and Equal Rights Amendment have meant and have not meant for blacks and women as she has lived through their maturation during the last 50 years. What better time than now to examine how these two seminal and defining events played out in the life of an ordinary African-American woman who believed in all of America s promises?
What better moment than today to look deeply at the life of a woman who prepared herself and worked tirelessly to achieve her goals only to realize that many lay beyond her reach and that of most women and most blacks. From Liberty to Magnolia shows readers, especially aspiring women and minorities with whom her story will have special resonance how to navigate and ultimately embrace the challenges at every major crossroads and be triumphant.
A Discussion Guide is included for use by book clubs, classes, and group discussions.

MY REVIEW : (LAWonder10)
From Magnolia to Liberty is an inspiring Memoir by an amazing lady! Her life and efforts is a tribute to not only the Black Community and Women, but is an example to all!
Her detailed story of her "beginnings" to present, is very enlightening and motivational.
Growing up as a granddaughter and daughter of preachers, she received a grounded and strongly religious background. Her experiences in listening to the Commentaries of Eric Sevareid and Walter Lippmann as a youth, inspired and influenced her drive to "be all she could be" in future years.
The manner in which she bore her trials during the Civil Rights movement, plus, through other negative attitudes toward her, is very admirable and worthy of emulation.
The information she provides of the formative years beginning in the 1950's to present day is very interesting.
The only negatives are: #1 There was quite a bit of repetition. #2. There was a little too much detail given to captivate the reader's attention. # 3. In conflict with her main message of being open-minded and obtaining all the facts before passing on opinion, was her comment concerning reasons that a woman did not win presidency. The lack of integrity and trust lost he election for that woman. Although there is a large amount of credibility to what she states , on a couple of issues. I felt her words and opinion were extreme.
The Book Title and Cover were very Fitting.
I highly recommend this book to all.
*This book was gifted me with no requirement for a positive review. This is my honest review.
I give this book a strong Four Stars rating.

Along with those positions, she has been writing columns for four decades on race, politics, education, and other social issues. They have appeared in a major metropolitan daily newspaper, The Kansas City Star; a major metropolitan business journal, The Milwaukee Business Journal; and for community newspapers The Milwaukee Courier, The Kansas City Globe, and The Kansas City Call. She began her career writing and delivering radio commentary for two years for one of the largest ABC radio affiliates in Wisconsin. Later in her career she wrote and delivered a two-minute spot on the two largest Arbitron-rated radio stations in the Greater Kansas City area. She has also written for several national trade publications, focusing on healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry.
Dr. Ellis published an online magazine, USAonRace.com, for seven years dedicated to increasing understanding across race and ethnicity, in which she analyzed race and equality issues in America. The website continues to attract thousands of visitors per year. The site also has a vibrant Facebook page with fans numbering in the thousands. Five years ago, Dr. Ellis launched a companion site, RaceReport.com, which aggregates news about race relations, racism, and discrimination from across the United States and around the world daily. Dr. Ellis also has her own website, JaniceSEllis.com, which houses a collection of her writings and where she continues to write about race inequality, gender inequality, politics, education, and other issues related to the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Janice Ellis, a native daughter of Mississippi, grew up and came of age during the height of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. Born and reared on a small cotton farm, she was influenced by two converging forces that would set the course of her life. The first was the fear and terror felt by blacks because of their seeking to exercise the right to vote along with other rights and privileges afforded to whites. The second was her love of books, the power of words, and her exposure to renowned columnists, Eric Sevareid and Walter Lippmann, whose work solidified her belief that the wise use of words is what advances the good society.
Janice Ellis became determined to take a stand, and not accept and allow the conditions of that farm life, or the strictures of oppressive racial segregation and entrenched sexism limit what she could become. She became determined to use whatever talents God had blessed her with and the power of words to help improve the human condition. FROM LIBERTY TO MAGNOLIA is her first book.

“Ask her to dance,” Ella prompted. Her big brown eyes, so much like April’s, shined up at him. Only her hair was different, a dark brown instead of April’s blonde. “What?” Preston looked at the doll she was shaking in his face. “Sprinkles wants to dance. You have to ask her to dance.” Preston snuck a glance at Corrie, who was holding back silent laughter, and then in his best doll voice said, “Sprinkles, may I have this dance?” The two dolls swayed together, and Preston felt like the world’s biggest idiot. But if this was what Ella wanted to do, that’s what they’d do. Whether he adopted her or not, he was still her uncle, and he wanted her to have good memories of him. Loretta cleared her throat and stood up. “I’m going to go. Ya’ll keep getting acquainted. Preston, give me a call later and we’ll talk. Bye, Ella.” Ella waved. “Bye, Miss Loretta.” Corrie looked a little panicked to see the woman go. He couldn’t blame her. He’d been in the apartment for five minutes and now they were left alone together to figure things out. He needed to explain how long he was staying. When he’d thought about spending a week with Ella, taking the time to make a careful decision, he hadn’t even thought about the roommate tagging along. She was just this person offering temporary housing. Having met her, she seemed like someone a little more important to Ella than that. He ran a hand through his hair. “Um, I can go whenever you need me to. I don’t want to make you feel like I won’t leave if you give me a gentle hint. Although I’m here for a week, and I’d like to come over every day. My flight is next Tuesday. I can change it though, if I need to.” Corrie came over and sat on the couch next to where they were playing on the floor. He had to look away from her long legs perched at eye level. Corrie wasn’t model-gorgeous like Nicole, but she was pretty enough to make the room feel smaller when he looked at her. He liked the sprinkle of freckles across her little snub nose and her big green eyes. He mentally smacked himself. They had things to work out, and dumb guy hormones would only make that harder. “Spend as much time with Ella as you need. Would you like to stay for dinner?” “That would be great.” The thought of eating alone in a restaurant was not appealing. Ella reached up and pulled on Corrie’s arm. “Play with us, Corrie. You can have Buttercup. She wants to dance with…um, what’s your name again?” Ella turned her questioning eyes to Preston. “Preston,” he prompted. “Dance with Preston,” Ella insisted. Corrie sat next to them and gave Preston an amused look. “Okay, Ella, but only for a minute. Then maybe we should play something else.” Preston bounced his doll back and forth next to Corrie’s, although his eyes were trained on the wall behind her. He could ham it up for Ella, but having Corrie playing along ramped up the embarrassment ten-fold. Somehow it reminded him of slow dancing with a girl for the first time at a seventh-grade dance. He hadn’t been able to make eye contact then either.

One of my favorite tropes is forced intimacy, whether it’s a pretend dating situation or a marriage of convenience plot. D’Andre Smith loves his mother, and he doesn’t want to do anything to upset her. So here he is having lunch with a reporter, and she hates reporters. So what can he do?
Before D could wrap things up, a raucous burst of laughter from the entrance to the restaurant blasted through his consciousness. Shit! He recognized that laugh.
D ducked down, the slatted wood partition kept him hidden right now but within a minute he was going to be busted.
“What’s wrong?” Elise’s perfect platinum brows arched down as she tilted her head quizzically.
Mary Smith hated reporters. Seriously hated them. “My mother,” he whispered.
Elise lifted in her booth seat and craned her neck to look over the partition. “Really?” Her smile illuminated their table.
Lordy, he needed her to not draw attention to them while he frantically searched for a reason to be here with her. “Don’t look,” he whispered.
She propped her arms on the table and hunched her shoulders so that she was below the partition. Her ice blue eyes danced with amusement, the cold demeanor wiped away by her smile. “Why are we hiding?”
“She hates reporters.” Jesus, his momma would rip him a new one if she found out he was here with a reporter.
“You’re seriously afraid of your mother?”
“Never piss off a Southern black woman, she’ll make you regret it.” His heart pounded in his chest.
“What were you going to do when my article came out?”
“I had time to ease her into the idea of an interview.” Think, think. “I’ve got it. Be my date.”
She reared back. “Excuse me?”
But that was it. His mother knew all his top employees. His business was more like a family than a corporation.
He reached across the table and grabbed her hand. His forearm rested on her phone between them.
Her skin was impossibly soft. “Pretend to be my lunch date.”
Her mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. “She won’t believe it. You date gorgeous black women, models.”
True. And surprising that she knew that.
“God your skin is so soft.” For a moment he got lost in the sensation of touching her.
She flushed, tensed her fingers, clearly ready to pull her hand from his.
“You’re not kidding.” In a heartbeat, she squinted her eyes, and her gaze turned calculating.
“Shit no, I’m not kidding.”
“What do I get out of it?”
“The satisfaction of knowing D’Andre Smith owes you a favor,” he hissed.
“Sorry, but I need more than that.”
“Can we discuss after we deal with this?”
She smiled. “Sure, but you owe me.”

EXCERPT THREE –
A dark figure appeared at the end of the tunnel. She hesitated. Should she walk on or turn back?
Were all dark figures ominous? Surely some dark figures were made from innocent civilians
making their way home. She walked on.
As she drew closer she saw it was a woman wrapped in a long cloak. Her dark hair was wild,
flying around her face in such a manner it appeared to be creating the wind and not merely being
disturbed by it.
She wasn’t young, yet she was far from old, her skin still taut, despite the creases that lined the
corners of her eyes.
Aashi knew she shouldn’t stare, but her eyes were drawn to this woman. And she was scrutinising
Aashi with the same fascinated look dancing in her eyes.
Years of having to protect herself from danger drove her feet forward. She went to pass the
woman, dropping her gaze to the ground.
‘Do you seek the truth?’ the woman said as she passed.
The fact she’d spoken to her in Hindi had gone unnoticed, so distracted was Aashi by her fear
She pressed on, breathing a heavy sigh when she passed safely.
Pain shot down her arm as a set of bony fingers took hold of her.
‘Vikram,’ she screamed, out of habit. This was the name she’d called all her life when she was in
danger—only he wasn’t here to help her now. Nobody was here. Was this her punishment for
what she’d done to Tara? Was this how the universe had decided to deal with her?
‘Do you seek the truth?’ the woman said smiling, still holding firm to her arm. Her voice was
kind. It had a smile in it. It didn’t seem the voice of anyone who meant her harm. Yet the grip on
her arm was anything but friendly.
‘Please let go of me,’ she begged.
‘Then you’ll run away.’
Aashi shook her head, knowing the minute she was released, she’d run.
‘Nikii sent you,’ said the woman.
‘You are her friend?’ Aashi was astonished. This strange woman couldn’t possibly be Nikii’s
friend. Nikii wouldn’t send her to stay with someone like this, would she? It didn’t make sense.
The woman withdrew her hand, sensing she’d no longer run.
Aashi rubbed her arm. It was going to bruise, yet that was the least of her concerns.
‘Everyone is my friend,’ said the woman. ‘You included. Now, it’s time for introductions. You
are Aashi, yes?’
Aashi nodded. ‘Who are you?’
‘I am the Truthseeker.’
‘Come,’ she said. ‘We have so much to talk about.’

To say I’m thrilled about my book being made into a movie is an understatement. I’m blessed and so very appreciative to all the people who have worked for over four long and arduous years to make this happen. In the movies, the heroine (me) would get a phone call and someone (the publisher) would announce that Hallmark just bought my book. That’s the dream scenario. That’s not what happened...
But here is the story within the story. For two plus years I have put one foot in front of the other hoping to make good on my promise to Jed. I have asked the producers to dedicate the film, “In Memory of Jed Nolan”. They’ve said they will do this on the end scroll. Whether it makes it past the cutting room or not, is in God’s hands. But I’ll be fighting for it all the way.
I’m still keeping my promise, Jed. I will never give up.
Please join me on my Prism Book Tour for Heart’s Desire. It will air on Hallmark on March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, which is the beginning of their SPRING FLING promotion. There will be lots of ads about our first Heartwarming book made into a film.
We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops you can see snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:
Reading Is My SuperPower - Review
"Heart’s Desire reminds me all over again why I love Indian Lake and its characters. The small town is welcoming and quaint, with its own personality and atmosphere. At the same time, it’s close enough to Chicago to allow for a nice blending of the big city with the small town life. Through Nate and Maddie’s story, Lanigan explores our hearts’ desires – the way they evolve over time and the way they sometimes take a direction we weren’t anticipating. Every reader will be able to relate on this level to these characters, and in the meantime they are treated to a sweet romance and a not-sure-how-this-is-going-to-turn-out plot. Looking forward to its adaptation on the Hallmark Channel. Congrats, Catherine!"
It's All About the Romance - My Favorite Romance Novels
Obviously, hands down my favorite would have to be ROMANCING THE STONE. Here it is 34 years later and it’s still a classic. The story still holds up and it’s funny. The lines are classic.
And so is the story. Even though the movie has been out of print for three decades, the movie is available on Amazon on DVD. So is JEWEL OF THE NILE.
For those coming to this blog, here’s an interesting tid bit. This past Wednesday, I had my pre-interview with the producer of HALLMARK HOME and FAMILY SHOW. Milena was terrific and we got along like old friends. Can’t ask for more than that. She asked me if there was anything in Romancing the Stone that was mine, since I’d written the book from the screenplay...

"Once again Mrs. Lanigan has transported us back to Indian Lake. Where everything seems real including the characters. This is the second book I have read from this author. This book will keep ya turning the pages to see what is going to happen...
I really enjoyed this book and felt every moment of the story."
Mello & June, It's a Book Thang! - Favorite Romance Books
Truth be told, I’m a diehard Jane Austen fan. I could read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE again. But I don’t have the time and the pages are falling out. What’s worse, I’ve seen the movie, oh, thirty, forty times. What a waste of time, right? I know how it ends.
I read Gone with The Wind so many times, my mother thought there was something wrong with me. I studied The ART of the ROMANCE NOVEL as a course in college. My mother gave me her mother’s favorite romance novel from 1914, BEULAH. I hated the woman’s name, adored the story...
The Power of Words - Review
"Heart’s Desire, book #2 in Catherine Lanigan’s Shores of Indian Lake series, is a sweet and enjoyable romance - creative and well written. The small-town Illinois setting of Indian Lake is vividly conveyed, drawing me right in to the community and residents, making it a place I’d love to visit – especially Maddie’s café. Each story in this series stands alone; however, reading in order lets you revisit beloved characters and see how they are doing. But best of, this story premiers as a Hallmark Channel movie entitled Sweetest Heart on March 17! As an avid Hallmark fan, I’m excited to see Maddie and Nate’s story come alive on the screen."
Heidi Reads... - Excerpt
She’d received beautiful flowers a few days ago, which was a first for her. Alex had even called her last night to make certain they’d arrived.
“Hey, beautiful. Happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow,” he’d said, his voice filled with anticipation. He spoke in a sultry baritone she’d never heard during their office meetings. Their conversations had always been about profits, projected earnings and potentials.
“They’re just gorgeous,” she’d gushed. “So exotic. Especially for this time of year.”
“I like unusual and unexpected things. Were you surprised?”
“Very. I couldn’t figure out who would be sending me flowers.”
“Ah. That’s good,” he said. “I wanted you to have something special while I was away...” His voice trailed off as if there was something else he was going to say before he thought better of it.
“So I don’t forget you? Is that what you were going to say, Alex?
Remembrancy - Review
"Another engaging and warm read from Catherine Lanigan that, thanks to Hallmark, we can soon watch on the small screen. Between Maddie’s friendships, Nate’s family, and the small town, this story is a perfect fit for the channel that focuses on romance."
I Am A Reader - Elements of Making a Memorable Movie
As my Heartwarming book, Heart’s Desire, comes to The Hallmark Channel, (re-titled THE SWEETEST HEART,) honestly, I haven’t had but a few moments to reflect on my favorite movies and what are the things that make my heart go ZING. But as I write these posts for this fabulous tour with Prism Book Tours, I realize that there are common threads for me.
Obviously, strong, emotional writing is everything. My producer, director husband, Jed Nolan, used to tell me that there was no way to repair a bad script. That’s why producers look so hard and long to find THE story that they want to spend a year, two years, ten years of their lives on. (Castaway took Tom Hanks 10 years to get a green light.) This isn’t play time. A producer will risk his money, his house, his reputation, sometimes his relationships, to see his film make it to the screen. That’s pretty daunting when you think about it...
Christian Chick's Thoughts - Review
"I loved reading about Maddie's quest to franchise her Cupcakes and Coffee Cafe. The whole process was fascinating—and complicated, as Alex, the investment firm employee helping her secure an investor, had more that business on his mind. Then, just as everything seemed to be going right with Maddie's business (and with Alex), her ex-boyfriend Nate showed up. The scene where Maddie first saw Nate was one of my favorites in the whole book ?."
Nicole's Book Musings - Excerpt
Dark shadows filled Maddie’s eyes as she continued to look at herself. Was it possible that only today, the flutter of a memory of Nate Barzonni, her first love, a high school romance, had haunted her? Even now, as she recalled his blazing Mediterranean-blue eyes and the intoxicating, addictive kisses they’d shared, her emotions were a storm of anger and pain. Nate had abandoned her eleven years ago, and she still felt the heartbreak.
If she ever saw him again, it would be too soon.
But then, there was the very real fact of Alex’s flowers—real and aggressive. He was spinning her dream for her, and though he would be gone for nearly a month, he promised to call and text her often. He’d told her they were close to finding an investor. Alex knew there was nothing more important to her than her business.
Rockin' Book Reviews - Review
"Another wonderful story by Catherine Lanigan. I love the story line and the sweet love story. The characters are awesome. It's always so fun to remember them from another story.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone who loves to read a good romance with lots of extras."
Hearts & Scribbles - Excerpt
Maddie walked into the main showroom and up to the front window where there was a step-up round riser. She lifted her skirt and heard the swishing of all the underskirts and the peau de soie next to the horsehair net. She stood still and looked at herself in the two cheval mirrors. The gleam of the light from the crystal chandelier overhead pirouetted off the crystals in the dress.
Mrs. Beabots clasped her hands together and brought them to her smiling lips. “You are a vision for my eyes, my dear!”
Sarah was dumbstruck and could barely speak. “It’s you, Maddie. The dress is like the angels made it for you.”
Thoughts of a Blonde - Excerpt
NATE BARZONNI HAD always been a man of single purpose and clear-minded goals. Never once had he thought his mind was incapable of reasoning out the best course of action for the highest possible good. He was a man of honor and conviction. He was a leader, and little swayed him off his chosen course or derailed him from his beliefs. He’d never been drunk, never used drugs, never lied or cheated. His mind was as sharp as a razor and as tight as a trap.
But that day, Nate was sure he’d lost all his senses and the entirety of his reasoning ability when he’d purposefully gone back to that bridal shop to confirm whether what he’d seen was real or a mirage. The shock of seeing Maddie Strong trying on a wedding gown was enough to rip his insides apart.
Book Reviews & More by Kathy - Excerpt
“I’m too busy for men.”
“So you say, but I wasn’t the one seeing an apparition of my former sweetheart out that window,” Mrs. Beabots concluded with the kind of sharp clip to the end of her comment that warned others that the Oracle had spoken.
Sarah’s eyes tracked from Mrs. Beabots back to Maddie, who was clearly confused and still a bit shaken by the vision or ghost or whatever it was she saw. “Maybe it was just all the excitement of these gorgeous gowns and dressing up. Maybe…”
Paulette's Papers - The Trouble With Loving Films
If you watch WHEN CALLS THE HEART on The Hallmark Channel, you’ll recognize Andrea Brooks. She plays the nurse to Paul Greene’s character. These are lovely ladies whom it was my privilege to meet. If all goes well, we will be meeting again. I have to write a book for Andrea, but I’ve had her character, Chloe in my head for years!! She’s an actress. Oh, to have that heart broken. Sorry, Andrea. But I told her that on set. She was good with it...
underneath the covers - Excerpt
Nate believed that people didn’t change their core personalities as they matured. Even at seventeen, Maddie had been compassionate, kind, bright, fun and deeply loving.
There had been times during his stint in the navy and later in med school when he’d remembered all too well what it was like to be with Maddie. To love her. As much as he wanted back then to return to Indian Lake and sweep her off her feet, he couldn’t do it. It wouldn’t have been true to himself. He’d sacrificed love in order to be the cardiac surgeon he was today.
Katie's Clean Book Collection - Film Fun
As I was sitting on the set, freezing in the unheated vacant old Cupcake café that we were shooting in. Ironically, the owner was in financial straits, which is the crux of the conflict for Maddie Strong…. she’s about to lose her business if she doesn’t get funding and expand —we heard that Hallmark was going to change the title from HEART’S DESIRE to THE SWEETEST HEART.
I could already hear the grumbling from Harlequin and my mind flashed back to an executive meeting I had in Los Angeles in January of 1984...
Among the Reads - Review
"It’s always interesting to find a new author only to discover they have been writing for a long time. Catherine Lanigan has written many books, and I imagine they are all as good as Heart’s Desire. ? ...
The author did a great job in conveying deep emotion and creating a realistic love triangle. The story went one direction and then another, yet it still made sense given the history and Maddie’s insecurity. Once you thought everything was going well, a new conflict arose.
Overall, it was a great story and just the right length."
Wishful Endings - Excerpt
Maddie stared at Nate. She didn’t know if she’d turned to ice or fire. She felt afraid and bold all at the same time. She told herself again that Sarah had been right. She was seeing a ghost.
Somehow, she managed to gather the courage to put one foot in front of the other, and with half the town staring at her, she walked across the dining room.
Streams of sunlight came through the huge windows that overlooked the lake as Maddie made her way around the chairs and tables, never taking her eyes off Nate. She didn’t hesitate as she pushed through the French doors to the Garden Room and came face-to-face with Nate.
Faithfully Bookish - Excerpt
Maddie sank into her office chair and ran her fingers through her hair. “Wow. A real investor.” She stared at the phone. Alex.
She felt the blood in her veins turn to ice as she faced the unknown. She balled her fists. “I can do this,” she told herself and glanced at herself in the antique gilt mirror she’d hung on the wall next to her desk so that she could always check her hair and lipstick before greeting customers. “I can do this. I want to do this. I will succeed in doing this.”
Her gleaming green eyes stared back at her. The girl in the mirror seemed genuinely confident. It was not bravado. She believed what she said.
Locks, Hooks and Books - Review
"Heart’s Desire is a delightful read that I thought was worth sitting down for a few hours. It is heartwarming, cute, sweet, clean and romantic. I did not care that it was slightly predictable. Definitely, worth putting on a reader’s must read list. I give it a well-deserved 5 stars and look forward to reading others in the Shores of Indian Lake series, as well as, more by Catherine Lanigan."
Brooke Blogs - Behind the Scenes on a Film Set
My husband used to say that making a film was no less work and no less hands than building a city. Though THE SWEETEST HEART is a television film on The Hallmark Channel, and certainly not TITANIC (which my agent worked on, by the way, for over two years), it’s mind-boggling what goes into the making of a film.
Sure there are folks out there who video some footage, put it together and post on YouTube. That’s not the kind of film I’m talking about.
One of the reasons this film looks so delicious, so lovely is the eye of the director, Steve Monroe. Yes, he was friendly and funny and had a great story about his kids jumping naked on the family trampoline at home in LA, while we were all freezing and wet in Vancouver. But, he was incredibly concentrated on the film. EVERY aspect of the film. I watched while he blocked the actors. As he created the lighting with his team. Along with the Director of Photography, there wasn’t an aspect overlooked...

"Love the story of Maddie and Nate. I am looking forward to seeing the movie of it. . . . Also I lot of other great characters in the book. I loved the name of one."
Hardcover Feedback - Review
"Heart's Desire was a captivating story that had me hooked from the bridal shop scene...
All in all, this was an enjoyable read and I'm glad to have read it. I'm excited that this book was made into a Hallmark TV movie and definitely plan to watch it once it airs. "

He considered her to be a genius because she’d made something out of nothing. That was the definition of genius to him. An idea was only ether and energy until someone put faith in it and molded, coddled, loved and forced it into existence.
She was a marvel to him and he hadn’t had enough time yet to tell her.
That was something he intended to rectify—soon.
He pulled the lid off his steaming cappuccino and took a sip. He took another sip. Then he whistled with appreciation. “Darn, that’s good. Really good.”
Nate was a coffee lover, and to his recollection, Maddie’s coffee was the best he’d ever tasted. The drink the other night wasn’t just a fluke. Maddie’s blend was exceptional. Was it possible that Maddie had bested the gourmet restaurants in Chicago and New York he’d visited? Was the milk different? Had she found better beans? What other tricks had she discovered in the years they’d been apart?

WHITCOMB SPRINGS” BY MK MCCLINTOCK
In the spring of 1865, a letter arrives in Whitcomb Springs for Evelyn Whitcomb. The Civil War has ended and the whereabouts of her husband is unknown, but she doesn’t give up hope. With courage, the help of a friend, and the love of a people, Evelyn finds a way to face—and endure—the unexpected. “Whitcomb Springs” is the introductory, stand-alone short story of the Whitcomb Springs series set in post-Civil War Montana. Excerpt from “Whitcomb Springs” Whitcomb Springs, Montana Territory—April 25, 1865 The letter fluttered to the table. Evelyn stared at the sheet of paper but could no longer make out the words as they blurred together. Surrender. She prayed this day would come, they all had, and after four tortuous years, the war was finally over. There would be more capitulation on the part of the South, and too many families who would never see their men again . . . but it was over. Separated, yet not untouched, from conflict, Evelyn Whitcomb lived in the same town her husband and their two friends founded one year before news of the Civil War reached them. By way of her sister, who lived in Rose Valley, Pennsylvania with their parents, they were kept informed as often as Abigail could get a letter through. Evelyn often wondered if she should have returned to Rose Valley to help with the war effort, much as her sister Abigail had done, yet she found the needs of Whitcomb Springs to be vast as the town continued to grow. Many men and boys left, leaving their wives, mothers, and sisters behind to fight for a cause they didn’t fully understand, yet still felt it their duty to serve. Others remained behind to continue working in the mine and watch over those families with or without kin. Evelyn read over Abigail’s letter once more, letting the words settle into her mind, for even now she struggled to believe it was over—that her husband might return home. Dearest Evelyn, For too many years now I have shared with you the horrors and travesties befallen many of the young men with whom we spent our childhood. News has reached us that on the ninth of April, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. Oh, sister, I dared not believe it was true when Papa brought home the news. He tells us not to become overly excited for there will surely be a few more battles waged until the news reaches both sides, but we can thank God that this war is officially over. Your news of Daniel’s disappearance has weighed heavy on my mind these past months since we heard, and Papa has attempted to learn of his whereabouts, to no avail. We have not given up! There is much confusion right now on both sides and Papa said it could be weeks or months more before the men return home. Do not lose faith, sweet Evie. “HEALING FIRE” BY SAMANTHA ST. CLAIRE After the death of Nora Hewitt's husband, the citizens of Whitcomb Springs didn't see odds favoring the young widow for holding onto the ranch with only her ten-year-old son to assist. That changes when a gentle giant of a man offers a helping hand. Motivated by compassion and his own grieving heart, the blacksmith becomes a mentor for the troubled boy and befriends the attractive widow, scandalizing the town gossips. Propriety is wielded like a weapon to separate them, but Providence makes its own plans through fire, loss and redemption. Excerpt from “Healing Fire” Sawdust floated into drifts beneath the workbench, swirling in the cold Montana morning air. His breath a thin fog, Dominik Andris sang to himself as he ran his palm down the length of the cedar plank. Deep and resonant, the Austrian’s voice might have suited his appearance had it not been for its soft timbre. Broad-shouldered, square-jawed, and generally solemn in bearing, most people avoided him except when his skills as a blacksmith or undertaker were required. Today, someone had need of him as the latter. A rectangular box stood propped against the back wall. Nearly complete, the box lid before him was carved in designs more suitable for a cradle. Dominik picked up a carving knife, dwarfed in his hands, and bent to correct a curve on the delicate vine tracing its way from one end of the lid to the other. He ran his fingers along its length, testing for burrs in the grain. His humming ceased and a line formed between his brows, a frown not directed to his work but to the reason for it. As he straightened, he rubbed at the back of his neck and a little groan escaped his lips. He took a sip of cold coffee before crossing the workshop to the back wall where he picked up the box in one hand. The weight of it or the absence of weight, struck a painful chord. Just four feet in length, it was enough. Enough to hold the body of the child, the woman’s child. Author Samantha St. ClaireSAMANTHA ST. CLAIRE was born in 2016, the alter-ego and pen name of an author of historical fiction born a few decades earlier. She may have found her niche in western historical fiction, served up sweet. The road from college graduation led due west where teaching in a small Arizona town fulfilled childhood fantasies on multiple levels. Hiking and backpacking the canyons and desert fed her imagination with the landscapes she would use later in life as an author. Moving to California opened new vistas, but Idaho sparked her interest in the history of the magnificent central mountain ranges.

Ex-FBI agent Riley Scott lives each day with the scars of her former career. After the murder of her husband and the recent attempt on her own life by the Russian mafia, her heart is irrevocably broken. Agate Island seems like the perfect place to begin building a new future for herself and her teenage son, yet even before the ferry docks at their new home, Riley realizes there will be no escape for her. There, on the boat, is mafia boss Maksimillian Petruso—the man who took everything from her. The man she killed.
Matthew Taggart knows who Riley is and understands her reaction to his resemblance of Maksimillian Petruso. But Matthew is nothing like his estranged criminal father. So far, he has been able to hide from that evil world. However, he’s afraid Riley’s appearance on the island may lead his family’s mafia connections to his doorstep. After all, she is the agent who took down his father. Matthew needs to leave town. Fast. Unfortunately, when the family wants to find him, there is nowhere he can hide. Now he and Riley are irrevocably connected, and learning to trust each other is their only hope of survival.
MY REVIEW: (LAWonder10)
A Familiar Fear is about an Ex-FBI agent, who left the agency to salvage what is left of her and her son's lives after so much was sacrificed in performing her duties there. Now, not yet forty, she is a widow and feels estrange from her only child - a son. Both her and her son need time together to heal from the tragedies of the past two years.
While going to Agate Island, where she will begin her new job, she spotted the man of her nightmares on the ferry. She must be hallucinating! She know he is dead!
Her very angry son makes a new friend - the only friend he now has - on the ferry trip to his new home. When meeting the girl's father, she "freaks out" and refuses for him to further pursue his friendship with her. The son rebels.
With the ensuing problems, Riley Scott (ex-FBI) and Matthew Taggart (girl's dad) discovers, among those they thought they could trust, there was at least one "mole". They must put aside their own issues toward each other to seek safety for their children. They must then learn to trust each other if the were to ever again to enjoy a life with their son and daughter.
There were many adventures and unexpected "twists" in a race against time to save those most precious to them. The reader will be anxiously turning pages until the very end of the book.
The characters are defined so well, the reader feels he/she is in the story with the other characters. The events feel so real, the whole novel feels like reality for that shot span of time!
The book cover is creative but very simple. It would not attract the "browser's" attention. The Title fits the story content very well.
The only real negative I have about the book is parts of it felt slightly repetitive. There are some graphically violent scenes.
This earns a Four and a Half Stars rating.

Whenever I'm asked "which is the best camera?" I pretty much respond: "the one you have on you." In fact, most of the images in this book were taken with my cell phone simply because I always have it with me.
This is not only a book about street photography but a visual diary, or collection of quirky, unusual and sometimes just plain weird photos I've taken over the course of the last decade.
As a street photographer, I need to be an assiduous walker. My sneakers often take me to little known, hidden corners, seaweed strewn (and sometimes stinky) beaches and really cool back alleys of my rather small island city of Victoria, BC.
I've also included images of curiosities I've seen throughout my travels.
Everyone sees the world differently and this is my collection of the quirkiness that I call life.
TRAVEL JOURNALS by Debra Schoenberger
Have you ever had the chance to admire the beautiful travel journals on Pinterest? As I admire the different beautifully designed journals, I can't help but be envious of those artists who are able to sketch gorgeous scenes of their travel experiences.
Bleh. I can barely draw a stickman. So what's the alternative?
Yep. For those artistically challenged like me, stickers can be a fun and easy way to create a travel journal. I like https://www.redbubble.com/ because they have loads of stickers.
As I travel, I tend to pick up cool and interesting paper souvenirs such as coffee coasters, business cards, and other ephemera. I also add small photos I've printed out with my mini printer (it works with wifi directly to my cell phone).
Washi tape is a decorative lightly sticky tape that comes in tons of different sizes and designs. You can buy them on https://www.etsy.com/ca/.
I pick up vintage National Geographic maps at the used book store and cut out the different countries that I will be visiting.
Although my journal is quite heavy, I bring it with me and work on it almost every day. I write down any interesting observations or situations that tickle my funny bone because I know that I will forget about them when I come home.

"My dad always carried a camera under the seat of his car and was constantly taking pictures. I think that his example, together with pouring over National Geographic magazines as a child fuelled my curiosity for the world around me.
I am a documentary photographer and street photography is my passion. Some of my images have been chosen by National Geographic as editor's favourites and are on display in the National Geographic museum in Washington, DC. I also have an off-kilter sense of humour so I'm always looking for the unusual.

Gossiaux’s first novel, the highly acclaimed Good Enough, propelled this nonfiction author into the world of inspirational fiction last year with praise from top reviewers.
Mrs. Chartwell and the Cat Burglar hits the shelves as a cozy romantic mystery that entertains as well as inspires. Threaded through the fun and romance is the timeless story of forgiveness and how sometimes the person we need to forgive the most is ourselves.
Mrs. Chartwell and the Cat Burglar
(ISBN 978-09976387-5-2 paperback or ISBN 978-0-9976387-2-1 ebook,
2017, Tri-Cat Publishing, 248 pages
Abigail Chartwell, university librarian of ancient maps and documents, gave up on love the icy winter night that she lost her husband. For the past six years, Abigail has been hiding behind thick glasses and the wedding ring he gave her. She had her one true love, and lost him. She isn’t about to experience that hurt again.
But then sizzling hot Tony the Cat Burglar drops into her life on a rope from the library skylight one night, when he comes to steal one of her maps—a map he claims can lead him to the “lost painting” of famous Italian artist Antonio Russo. Quoting Shakespeare, clad in black spandex, and armed with his charming smile, Tony and his story are hard to resist. Intrigued, Abigail gets caught up in the hunt, not realizing that the thief’s real target may be her heart.
~Available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, iBooks, Kobo.
This was such a fun, captivating cozy mystery. It was another one of those, "I just couldn't put it down!" ones.
Abigail Chartwell, had no children and was only married a short while when her husband was killed in a car accident. She decided then, shewould become as unapproachable as possible and wrap herself in the comfort and security of her career. This had worked well until that fateful night the "Cat Burglar" arrived!
The reader will become so entwined in the characters of the story, he/she will feel like he/she is there! The scenes are so vividly described, they are easily visualized.
This novel is a delightful reading pastime, from beginning to the very end!

He was dressed in black—some sort of tight outfit that looked like something a runner would wear. It covered his entire body, including his face, she noticed with a bit of fright. Only his eyes were showing.
He froze when he saw her. There was a long black rope hanging just above his head, threading its way up the three floors to the dome above them.
Abigail was about to scream when the man put his finger to his lips. Something about his movement stopped her.
“Good evening, ma’am,” he said, and gave her a sweeping bow.
Her eyes narrowed. “Is this a robbery?”
“This is most certainly not a robbery,” he said, holding both hands up. “Robbers are armed. Thieves are not.”
“There’s an old Russo painting hidden in the city, and there’s a map that leads there. I’m here to get that map.”
“The portrait? That’s a legend,” she said. “It’s not true. Treasure hunters would have found it years ago.”
“But they don’t have the information I have,” he said.
My grandmother’s dying. I need that map.”
He was standing there, wearing jeans and a burgundy sweater, his hands gripping her desk.
“That’s a terrible pick-up line,” she said.
