Author
: Debra Holland

Length: 6 hours 15 minutes - Release date: Oct. 16, 2014
Publisher: Debra Holland⎮2014
Genre: Romance; Historical Fiction
Synopsis:
Mail-Order Brides of the West is a collaborative series by New York Times best-selling author Debra Holland and USA Today best-selling author Caroline Fyffe.

When Lina Napolitano's nanny position ends, she has no desire to return to the crowded family compound in St. Louis and endure the pressure from all her boisterous and overbearing Italian relatives to marry a local man. After eight years of living away from her family, she's accustomed to making her own decisions. Lina wishes to be a wife - just not of the local garbage man or fishmonger. Traveling as a mail-order bride to Sweetwater Springs, Montana seems like the perfect solution to escaping her smothering family and forging her own life.

REVIEW By LAWonder10:
Lina’s employment as a governess was coming to an end. Not wanting to return home to live with her beloved, yet too large, family, she discovered an ad for mail order brides. Could she actually do this? After weighing the pros against the cons, she decided she could do this daring thing. Born of an Italian family, it would be hard to leave the closeness they shared to go so far away. Still, it seemed to be the best choice for Lina.
Once she arrived at her destination, she strongly questioned her decision.
This is another story about the challenges that mail order brides faced by coming out West to an unknown frontier. It is also a tale about what families experienced in setting towns in the wilderness. Lina’s husband had lived with the disgrace of an alcoholic father and with the prejudice against an Indian wife. He would not let that prejudice hurt his young son.
The characters are all very personable and well developed. The scenes are clearly described and easily “experienced”. The Title and Cover image are chosen well. The Narrator, Lara Asmundson, does a very good job in narration. The “voices “ were not as consistent as in other stout, yet were very effective.
I offer a Four Stars rating for performance and for story content. *This book was gifted me with no pressure to give a positive review. This is my honest review

REVIEW By LAWonder10:
Alina, and the other tenants, are being evicted from their homes! Furthermore, the new owner offered a sizeable bonus if they move out by the first of the year! Move out! They can never find a residence in this city to rent near to the cost of this one, saying nothing of by the first the year!  It is the only home she has ever known and, since her father's demise, has managed the apartments. Now outraged she will do all in her power to stop the destruction of her building.

The new CEO of the family company, Graham, has had to become centered in trying to save his deceased father's company and prove he can be very capable. It will take huge "steps" in order to save the dynasty his father created.

This is a great Christmastime story! It is related to other similar themes, yet themes we all need to remember.  Jennifer is a very talented author who always manages to captivate readers.

Most characters are very endearing. They are all very well defined and realistic. The scenes are easily visualized as one progresses through the story. The Cover image and Title are both chosen well.

I offer a Four Stars rating

REVIEW By LAWonder10:
This is a sci-fi set 5000 years in the future. It is a feasible theory but slightly depressing.
This is about politics, corruption and advanced society.

Six very unlikely individuals become a "skeleton" crew on a space ship in search of what is suppose to be a life-changing voyage. Will they be able to work together with such extremely varying backgrounds?

Each has issues he/she needs to resolve to successfully move on in life. They are a team and must be able to trust one another. Trust is easily lost and difficult to gain.

They are faced with many challenges in their journey for success.

The characters are described well and the scenes are portrayed well. The book cover image and title are a good "fit".

It was difficult for me to "get into" but as it progressed it became easier to "connect with".

I offer a Four Stars rating.
*This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.

  GUEST POST:

Picture
Well, That’s Annoying By: Kevin W. Bates
The other day I was reminded of one of my pet peeves in science fiction. And thereby, as the Bard says, hangs a tale. Here it is.
Recently, my wife spent a couple of weeks with one of our daughters and her family. Batchin’ it is not my favorite activity and to top it off in the second week of her stay, I had to call her with tragic news. Unexpectedly, the television in our upstairs living room died.
“Did it really die or did you kill it?” She asked.
Shocked at this suspicion when I expected sympathy, I protested. “It died, really. I can’t believe you think I’d harm our TV. Where would that idea even come from?”
Silence.
Not a normal silence, but one of those silences pregnant with meaning. Here the meaning was, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
And she was right. I knew perfectly well where her idea came from—those diabolical people at Costco. Those sneaky Costco marketers position their brand new 55 to 75 inch Ultra High Definition, 4K, OLED, HDR smart televisions with 120 Hz refresh rates at the entrance. You can’t walk into the store without seeing the slim displays that make your current TV look like a clunky 1950s era black and white box. It didn’t escape my wife’s keen eye that when we visit Costco, I slow down. She catches me eyeing those TVs every time.
“Honest,” I said. “It just died. You know it’s been acting funny lately, and I thought it was the HDMI cable?”
“Mmm,” she murmured, infusing a universe of doubt into that sound.
“Turns out it was the set.” I licked my lips, struggling to keep my voice even and excitement free. “But you know, silver linings and all that.”
“Have a good time,” she said, and the conversation moved on to other topics.
So it was that the day after she returned home, I was experimenting with our new television, exploring its potential, when I ran across a feature that allowed us to view movies for free with minimal commercial interruption. Stargate was one movie on offer. I remembered seeing that movie in a theater with my son. So I started watching.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I quite liked the movie, but at a certain point I had to pause the replay and complain to my wife. In the movie, the heroes on earth discover a gate that transports them across the galaxy. On the new world the heroes from earth discover that an evil alien has transported humans to the world to work as slaves in his mine.
And there it was. One of my pet peeves in science fiction. You have a hugely advanced technological base, one which is capable of wonders like building an instantaneous galactic transportation system and you’re still using weak humans to mine things? Sure, sure, I understand all science fiction requires the suspension of disbelief, but this one really gets me. In the Hunger Games, for example, the Capitol enslaves Katniss’ people to mine coal, of all things. Coal. You mean to tell me that all the high-tech transportation and Capitol’s advanced tech is powered by Coal? It boggles the mind. Again, don’t get me wrong, I liked the Hunger Games as well. It’s just that I like my science fiction to be more consistent in its application of technologies. Using human labor when machines and non biological power sources are available seems terribly in-congruent to me.
So, there you go. That’s one of my few pet peeves. Well, I may have more than a few. Just don’t ask my wife about my pet peeves. She is somehow under the impression that I have a million of them

Meet the Author:

Kevin W. Bates was born in Berkeley, California and, with the exception of a couple year stint in Sydney Australia and a study abroad program in Japan, was raised there. In his Martin Luther King Jr. High and Berkeley High School years, Kevin developed a life-long fascination with science fiction (and, oddly, nuclear weapons) and a tendency to day dream. He discovered early that among the greatest joys in life is the thrill of losing yourself in a gripping space adventure soaring across the galaxy. Raised on classic science fiction authors such as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Ray Bradbury, Kevin took up writing science fiction to provide the same mind expanding thrills he enjoyed from those authors and more contemporary ones like Alastair Reynolds, Iain M. Banks, David Brin and Neal Stephenson.

REVIEW By LAWonder10:
Trudy had taken her deceased mother's place for years. Now her father was okay and her youngest sister was married. Trudy felt certain she would find it hard, at her age, to find available men for marriage in St.Louis. She applied to the agency to become a mail-order bride to someone in the West. Another girl, Evie, was also applying there. The two became friends and agreed to keep in touch with each other and share in each other's adventures.
After receiving devastating news, in order to "save face" in his small Montana town, Seth boldly claimed to have a beautiful bride coming. He then proceeded to answer an add for a mail-order-bride.
When Trudy arrived, the terrain was very different from what she was used to. The man she was to marry met her at the train station. They were both satisfied with the physical aspects of their new relationship, if only they were compatible. They were married and the adventures began.
This is a very good story of a couple, from very different backgrounds, and their efforts to create a life together. It is a story of compromise, attitudes, and self discovery.
The character were very realistic and well defined. The scenes were vividly portrayed.
The Narrator, Lara Asmundson, did an outstanding job in creating "voices", emphasis with pleasant sounding energy.

I offer a Five Stars rating in all areas of this book and narration.
*This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.

Three Essential Tools for Any Artist: Planning, Positivity and Creativity
Objectively, any artistic endeavor is a multi-step, multi-variable and detailed process. Subjectively, the process will also be an emotional roller coaster. These observations are true regardless of the activity’s scale. I’ll provide two examples here. If you intend to write and self-publish a book, that’s a large-scale undertaking (perhaps as long as twelve or more months, depending on the word count). If you intend to write and post a blog article, that’s smaller scale (perhaps five to ten hours). Smaller scale activities can still be complicated, detailed and capable of raising your emotional temperature. Remember that the business and marketing side of your creative activities can be very time-consuming too.
Now, take a deep breath. Okay...
I suggest that you set your expectations for any project at the outset, because it’s going to be a marathon not a sprint. Keeping the big picture in mind will help you when you get tired, frustrated and confused. On the upside, at times you’ll also be euphoric, proud and confident. Keeping everything—where “everything” means the combination of your creative output and the administrative work necessary to release it to your audience—in perspective and staying positive will allow you to be your best creative self.
Planning will help you by providing a road map of your path forward, as well as a record of how you got to where you are today. I vigorously recommend that you write everything down. I use a big Word document for this purpose. It’s my work and marketing planning diary; a repository of tips, tricks and resources; and a treasure trove of random thoughts and notes. I use Word’s Outlining feature to quickly organize this large document. (For reference, my version of this Word document now stands at 160 pages. I’m not including the dozens of data-intensive Excel workbooks I maintain. Sometimes Excel is much better suited to tracking data than Word, but that’s a topic for another blog post.)
Staying positive of course involves being optimistic but also includes reducing negativity. Ignore any naysayers, starting with yourself. It’s easy to be self-critical, believe me. When you hear that nagging voice in your head, doubting the value of what you’re doing, ignore it. Replace negative self-talk with a strong connection to your initial vision, faith in your personal creative spark and the support of your family, friends and superfans. (One of the themes of my book Incandescent Visions is recognizing self-criticism and learning how to fight it.)
If you’re feeling stuck or drained creatively, I suggest that you take one action, small or large; other actions will follow naturally, and you’ll find yourself on your own path to self-discovery. Several years ago I was pondering this fundamental question, “How can I be more creative?” I had put in three decades of full-time work and felt the need to renew my interest in art and creativity, and launch my “second act.” The first action I took was a visioning exercise. I found some quiet time, let my imagination run unconstrained, then wrote myself a letter describing those imaginings. One of the resulting aspirations was to do more creative writing. I decided to put effort into realizing those dreams and, long story short, twelve months later I had published this book.
In summary, by planning ahead and setting realistic expectations for your artistic projects, you’ll better regulate the process and your emotions throughout. Staying positive encourages you to think freely, clearly and creatively. Breaking down large tasks into smaller components allows you to develop inertia and observe yourself making measurable progress: positive feedback loops are awesome!
I wish you the best on your creative journey.

Book Details:
The Waltz of Devil’s Creek by Justine Carver
Publication date: October 20th 2020
Genres: Adult, Historical

Synopsis:
Judith Campbell is dying, and she cannot take the painful truth about where her son came from to the grave with her. While on her deathbed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994, Judith tells him the tragic story of his conception, and which of two men his birth father could be: the young man who professed his love to her, or the pastor who assaulted her.
Set in the Deep South in 1947, The Waltz of Devil’s Creek digs into the dark crevices of racism and women’s rights during a heated political climate in an era of segregation. Combined with Judith’s lack of social stature, and at a time when reporting sexual assault was unheard of, every injustice is stacked against her from the very beginning.
But there is a light in Judith’s young life: her best friend, Joseph Bird, who has loved her since childhood. Joseph stands up for Judith when no one else will and proves that even in the darkest of times, a light is always burning.

Book Details:
I Will Always Love You by Ashley Lee London
Category:  Adult Fiction (18 yrs +),  287 pages
Genre: Romance  |  Publisher:  Ashley Lee London
Release date:   June 2020  |  Tour dates: Nov 16 to Dec 11, 2020
Content Rating:  PG. No F Words, I can think of several swear words and some profanity, one very mild sex scene after its conclusion.

Book Description:
Grace Parrish made two mistakes when she fell in love. She forgot her mother’s stories of segregation. “Don’t love a white man, Grace. It’s too hard and he’ll break your heart.” Even worse, she fell in love with her best friend’s husband, Peter.
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU is a poignant story about the foundation of marriage: love, honor, and fidelity—and the heartache of unrequited love. The must-read story shows how the power of love can overcome adversity, the pain of loss, and rejection because of racial heritage.
Grace honors her best friend Lori’s marriage and refuses to pursue an affair, yet her heart will not allow her to love another. The bond of Peter’s love continues after Lori’s passing. During a chance meeting between Peter and Grace, much to their surprise, a spark ignites that causes them each to wonder, “Could it be that we’ve been given a second chance to fall in love?”

BOOK REVIEW By LAWonder10:
This is indeed, a poignant love story.. it is actually several love stories!

This is a touching emotional "roller coaster" of relationships and events. I really liked it because it is realistically a similitude of what many experience in life. It isn't a simple story of "happily ever after".

The story begins with an abusive, sad situation with Lorraine then follows her life evolving into the lives of several others. The story continues through about three generations.

The story is written quite well and includes various social situations and challenges.  It also pointed out that racial prejudice is in each racial group. The characters are well developed and the scenes portrayed well. the Title and Cover image are chosen well. The only negative, I perceive is while switching from one character's situation to another's, it was not concise enough, thus, would briefly confuse the reader. Other than this, I felt the author captivated the reader's interest and the moral of the story was presented well.

I offer a Four Stars rating for this book.
*This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.

A LOVE STORY—SAYING GOODBYE—SAVING HELLO by Ashley Lee London

Allison sat crossed legged, careful that her sneakers did not rest on the grave of Staff Sergeant Thomas McCade. She kissed her index and middle fingers and touched her husband's name on the upright stone marker at the Miramar National Cemetery in California.
"Love you, babe."
She caught sight of the sad man standing at a grave a short distance away. He bowed his head and covered his eyes with a hand. She had seen him often on weekends. A year ago, he waved when he was the first to leave. Allison always waved back.
"Sorry I'm late today," she said. "Our five-year-old daughter decided she wants to change the plans for her birthday party. This is the third change she's made. I swear, sweetheart, she takes after you. Remember when we were buying our house, and you kept going back and forth. Yes, I promise I'll bring pictures so you can see her open her presents."
She wiped away the inevitable tears that interrupted her visits. Recovery achieved, she said. "Can you believe she is going to be starting school this fall? Oh, before I forget, your kid brother has a girlfriend. Honey, I think she's the one. He can't quit talking about her."
"Oh my God. The man I keep telling you about. The one who is often here when I come. He's walking toward me."
"Excuse me," the man said. "I hope I am not interrupting. I just wanted to stop and pay my respects. My name is Randall Hunter. Your husband?'
Yes. I'm Allison McCade."
"I see your husband received the Silver Star. That is a high honor."
"He saved his unit in Afghanistan. You lost your brother?"
"My wife. She was a nurse. There was an attack at her base in Iraq.
"I'm sorry."
"Thank you. I lost her five years ago. My family keeps telling me it's time to move on. The only thing that keeps me going is our son. He's eight and plays basketball and baseball. I had to buy a van to carpool him and his teammates.
"I lost my husband three years ago. My parents and sisters nag me all the time to meet someone. I'm not ready. Maybe I'll never be ready."
"You know, the hardest thing is to find someone who understands what you and I are going through. A friend. Someone to talk to. Someone you do not have to apologize when you cry. No romance. Just a friend. There's a bench next to your car. Would you sit with me the next time you come for a visit? Tell me about all of your happy times with your husband. I'll tell you about my wife's love for life, and how she killed everything she ever planted."
The unexpected question stumped Allison, and she became quiet. At last, she turned away. What do you think, sweetheart? Someone needs to hear how much I love you and miss you. Another pause.
“Okay. Next time we see each other.”
Four years later, Randall and Allison McCade Hunter announced the birth of their daughter, Melody.

Top Five Things to Know if You’re New to Love and Danger in St. Claire
1. Because dessert.
Like all small Pennsylvania towns, St. Claire never runs out of sugar. Stop at Apple’s Fritters or Poppy’s Pies and Tarts for the treat of your choice.
2. Small towns are not without BIG secrets.
In a town where everyone knows everyone, you’d think there’d be nothing left to hide. You’re wrong and you’ll never believe the identities of the wolves in sheep’s clothing.
3. Heroines don’t apologize for who they are.
They’re feisty, sweet, loud, shy, career-driven, or homebodies. Crafty, outdoorsy, clumsy, nerdy, or fierce. Or maybe a little bit of everything.
4. I Didn’t See That Coming
For a slow town, danger moves fast and it’s chasing everyone. Even if they don’t realize it. Vandalism, arson, money laundering, and murder are all weapons for these villains and you never know just who’s holding them.
5. #jesus
Faith’s a skill and not often easy, but a hard journey can bring you closer to the reason to have it. My characters know they are part of something bigger. That life isn’t easy. But they’re going to live it with purpose, knowing they were bought with a price.
Now open the book and find out the rest yourself.

DON'T LOOK IN by Tom Saric
Category:  Adult Fiction (18 +), 230 pages
Genre:  Thriller, Mystery
Publisher:  Severn River Publishing
Release date:  October, 2020  |  Tour dates:  Nov 9 to Nov 20, 2020
Content Rating:   PG-13 + M. No gratuitous sex, profanity or violence.

Book Description:
A PSYCHIATRIST BECOMES PRIME SUSPECT IN THE MURDERS OF HIS PATIENTS IN A NEW THRILLER

The patients of psychiatrist Gus Young are turning up dead in Tom Saric’s new thriller, DON’T LOOK IN (October 6, 2020; Severn River Publishing), and he is the main suspect.
Gus fled the big city to escape the shame, gossip and glares of his family, friends and colleagues after he tarnished his reputation. He ends up in a small, backwater rural town in Maine where no one will know him and he can start his life over. But someone is out to get him, and is framing him for the murders of his patients.
Wanda Flynn, the sexy town prostitute who is having an illicit affair with the married mayor, is demanding that he leave his wife for her. Her brother has just been released from jail after a ten-year sentence, and is back in town. It was Wanda’s testimony that was pivotal in sealing his conviction. Suddenly she is found dead, shot in the head in front of her apartment, shortly after she had unburdened her secrets, fears and desires to Gus Young. Because of patient-client confidentiality, Gus cannot reveal that she is his client, nor what she revealed to him, even if it will help to solve the murders, or clear his name as a suspect.
Then another patient, Ned, who is suffering from paranoia and is sure he knows the identity of Wanda’s killer, is found dead in his home after he had an altercation with Gus that left him bleeding on the floor. The police find bullets in both victims that match a rare gun, the Lee-Enfield No.4, which has mysteriously vanished from Gus’s basement. And they find Wanda’s turquoise necklace in his possession.
All the evidence point to Gus. He is the prime suspect in the murders, but in order to protect his clients’ confidentiality, even after they are dead, Gust doesn’t reveal information that can prove his —Over— innocence. Gus puts his own life in jeopardy in a desperate effort to clear his name and track down the real killer. When his estranged daughter comes to visit him, her life and the life of his trusted friend Sheila, are in jeopardy from the real killer who wants to do them harm. As a sinister plot unravels, Gus discovers a horrible secret about his past.
Tom Saric, who is a psychiatrist, packs his thriller with quirky characters: the cross-dresser, the married couple who don’t enjoy sex, the psychopath who is a petty criminal, the town sex-worker, and a love interest, the tall beautiful blonde who shares his love of country music and is the first woman to show an interest in him after his messy divorce.
DON’T LOOK IN is the first in a series featuring psychiatrist Gus Young who uses his acuity in understanding the human psyche to solve murders. Fans of the HBO series, In Treatment starring Gabriel Byrne, will relish the character of Gus Young as he solves murders using psychological, not forensic, evidence.

Author: Tom Saric/DON’T LOOK IN

I love to read, but I am a terribly slow reader. I've met people who can plow through a book in a day, and read three to four books a week. The fastest I've ever read a book was forty eight hours, The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. It was required reading for grade twelve english class and I'd left it to the last minute. So, how quickly can I read? I'm embarrassed to say that I average about a book a month.
I can't really tell you why I read so slowly, it just seems to be how I am. I've definitely slowed down as I've started writing. I can't seem to read a book without paying attention to how the author is telling the story, how they lay out the setting, and how they weave in the backstory. I almost enjoy noticing the craftsmanship more than simply enjoying the story!
I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers. I love how John Grisham can write backstory that is as immersive as the most exciting chase scenes. I love how Michael Connelly has created characters that are cooler than anyone I've met. I'm a big fan of twists. The best one I've read recently was The Silent Patient by Alex Micheledes. I'm not sure how any of those writers come up with their ideas or their writing process, but I enjoy seeing how they construct the book to keep the pages flipping.
My friend Brian Shea, a bestselling author also with Severn River Publishing, is an extremely productive writer who pointed me toward a book called 2,000 to 10,000 by Rachel Aaron. This short manual has really improved my efficiency in writing. The biggest change to my writing process was that at the start of any writing session I spend 5-10 minutes writing down what I am going to write. Details like 'Gus is going to walk into the hardware store and say 'Hi' to Denise, who he will thank for giving him cookies. He'll proceed down the aisles, until he reaches customer service where Sheila is standing....' After writing this out, I have a clear path of what needs to happen, and also gets me into the tempo and vibe of the scene. My words per hour easily doubled with that one change to my process.
I'm hoping that with this new process I will be able to complete the next two Gus Young thrillers in 2021. I am part way through book two, and I think that I will have it submitted to my publisher by March of 2021. I hope to have book three completed by fall of 2021. If all goes well, by the end of 2021 there will be three Gus Young books out there (with hopefully more to follow)

More than anything, she wants to share in his life as a help and support, but keeping a house and finding her place in the community requires much more work than she ever expected.

REVIEW By LAWonder10:
This is a delightfully fun drama! Although there is not a lot of action, the story steadily moved along, maintaining the readers interest.

This is about a preacher, Logan, whose past has caused him to lack some confidence in himself. However, he is friendly, likable and loves the Lord and his fellowmen/women. He particularly cares for a certain young woman  he became
engaged to. As in all things in life, the engagement did not come without complications.
Would Karen truly be his new wife in a few months?

The characters in this book are all very endearing - sooner or later. The reader can easily imagine himself/herself being there. As one situation led to another, there was a feeling of
comradery  and acceptance.

The writing was very good, the Cover image and title were well-chosen, and the plot held some humor as well as romance.

I offer a Five Stars rating for this book.
This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.

Book Details:
Remember Me at Christmas (Spirit of Christmas Novella)
by Debra Curwen

Published by: Vinspire Publishing
Publication date: November 16th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:
Andi has always loved Christmas. The magic, the surprises, and a precious music box she treasures inspired her to open her own Christmas workshop. Andi’s Antiques is now a thriving business, and she sees a long future ahead.
But she hadn’t counted on Mike who wields his charm like a weapon or his determination to buy out her business and replace her quaint, antique shop with its wonder of Christmas with a bar and gaming tables.
Andi isn’t selling no matter how convincing he may be. Sure, there’s something about the guy that’s magnetic, but it’ll take a lot more than a handsome face to make her give up on her dream. Unlocking her heart, though, may be a different story.
