REVIEW by LAWonder10:
Beyond What Separates Us is a very realistic Dystopian novel. It portrays the way men and women of greed, power and money can destroy societies, the environment and become more inhumane than any other species on earth. It also portrays that thee will always be men and women who courageously fight against deprivation and the lack of freedom. This is about individuals in four different communities in various parts of the world who join in the fight against the failed attempt of a "one world government". The destruction, selfish greed and "hearts which become cold" is abundant and the world has been devastated through endless wars. The individuals this story is centered on are among those who are seeking a better world. This follows several years beginning in mid-twenty first century. This is a poignant tale of love, loss, families separated, poverty, degradation. It is also a time of hope, restitution, and regaining humane feeling. I did have problems in differentiating one ongoing tale from another. The different scenarios were not distinctly separated. Otherwise, the writing of the characters and scenes were very good. It was hard following which group was which. In the book, it mentions climate change and the environment was part of the cause for the deterioration of the world. I fail to see how the lack of environmental control nor climate change was the main cause of the power hungry "leaders' who deceived and beguiled the populations to violence, intolerance, and a willingness to belong to a one world government. It can only collide when the power-hungry, greedy men and women want to be the ruler. That stated, I do believe in respecting the earth and the living animals and foliage. I feel we must use wisdom in doing things and in taking care of these things. However, "earth was created for man to enjoy", not vise verse. I offer a Three Stars ratting for this book. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review
Significance of the Title – Beyond What Separates Us
The idea for the title occurred well before most of the novel was written. As someone that considers himself an environmentalist, with a keen interest in politics, the title and themes of the novel relate to my own hopes and aspirations for the future. We live in a society of conflicting and increasingly polarized ideologies. Social media is too often used as a pulpit for hate and division. When I started writing the novel, I had no idea that 2020 would usher in a global pandemic, increased authoritarianism and mass protest movements for racial justice, climate action, and political freedoms. I certainly had no idea these things would happen before the novel was released. For me, this novel became a means of expressing my anxieties and concerns for the future of humanity; encompassed by the word ‘us’ in the novel’s title. Instead of uniting as a species to confront the irreparable damage we are doing to our planet, we continue to exacerbate extensive societal divisions. These divisions include racial, national, cultural, religious, gender and ideological divisions. As a species we seem to be becoming more entrenched within our own comfort groups and unwilling to accept new information or critically analyze opposing perspectives. Instead, segments of society dismiss evidence that goes against their pre-conceived notions as fake or a hoax. The increasing dismissal of science and objective facts is especially troubling. This novel is a glimpse of the danger of ignoring the realities of various environmental issues. History shows that societal progress often occurs after significant upheaval or disasters. While Beyond What Separates Us is a story of collapsed or transitioning societies, which could be categorized as dystopian, ultimately the novel has a message of hope. Perhaps to overcome all that divides humanity requires first hitting rock bottom? This is the essential question that this novel asks. By following the four main characters as they navigate a drastically different world, the reader is confronted with the difficult questions of what sort of world we want to live in. ![]()
