After years spent fighting alongside King Richard in the crusades, Lord Edmund of Hawksford is finally returning to his ancestral home. But far from a joyful reunion, what awaits him is devastation. His elder brother is dead, killed in a tragic fire at Hawksford Castle—and the title of duke now falls to Edmund. When he strives to rebuild the fire-scarred castle, Edmund learns that his was not the only life the fire shattered: his childhood friend Lady Phillipa survived the flames that took Edmund's brother, but badly burned, she has hidden herself away from those she loves. Yet as the pair renews their acquaintance, they find that their affection runs deep—perhaps even deeper than they'd ever realized.
As Edmund and Pippa begin to question whether the fire was truly an accident, they must discover the truth of the past before they can plan for their future. While coming perilously close to the answers they seek, Edmund and Pippa find themselves at the mercy of a dangerous foe who will stop at nothing to lay claim on Hawksford—and he will destroy any who stand in his way.
Sian Ann Bessy has once again created an outstanding novel!
The setting is twelfth century England on the Welch borders. It also touches on the ending of "The Crusades" and King Richard. It is a perfectly romanticized time of history,
Barley escaping the "Crusades" with his life, a dedicated knight and Lord returns to England only to discover his father passed away and his eldest brother - now the Duke- was killed in a fire. He knows his only option is to return home and take over as the Duke or all would be lost.
Upon arriving at the family castle, Edmund discovers much is amiss and the fire claimed more victims than his brother and his new wife. Much has to be done. He was never trained to be a Duke. He felt overwhelmed. He was well liked and respected and his mother had full confidence in him.
What he doesn't realize is his skills on the battlefield is what he will be required to use at home.
This is an action-packed historical romance. There is much danger and Intrigue that will appeal to even the non-romance lover. The reader's interest is captivated from the start and stays captivated to the very last page
The characters all "come alive" and the scenes easily visualized. The Book Cover and Tital "fits" the story very well.
This earns a Five Stars rating.
