Excerpt # 2
Rebecca nudged me, but I pretended to be asleep. She shook me again. I groaned but didn’t move. She heaved out a single weighty breath. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest. Why did I promise her that we’d visit her parents this afternoon? I wasn’t ready to tell them that we were back together. They loved me when we first dated, but then I broke her heart. There was no way they’d give me another chance, was there?
The entirety of the quaint, little town we both came from talked about how much they hated me. What would they think about Rebecca giving me another chance? The neighbors and all our close friends would have something to say. Her folks came from a conservative community, and I knew all too well how much they frowned upon married men dating before getting divorced. They had spread rumors that Amanda was my mistress back in the day, but that hadn’t been the case. It was true I had moved on, but I hadn’t cheated on Rebecca. Not like         I had done to Amanda.
She nudged me harder. “Come on, Matt. Wake up.”
I grumbled and turned over to make eye contact with her. “I’m getting up. I didn’t sleep well last night.” It was the truth.
