Late Blooming Author Writes First Novel
The other day, a reader asked, “How long have you been writing novels.” “For years,” I wanted to say. Of course, I would have been lying like a rug because I did not finish writing my first novel until 2018. Before being published, my first love was reading. In my childhood home, I was seven and an avid reader of the Encyclopedia Britannica and Merriam Webster’s Dictionary--the only books we had besides the Bible. That interest has been lifelong; I believe it was the making of a writer. Back then, I’d read anything with words I could get my hands on. In addition to reading, I also loved writing. Like you, I’ve been writing since I was in grammar school. In second grade, I became a “published writer” when my teacher submitted my first poem to the school’s newsletter. My classmates hated on me. That’s when I knew for sure maybe I could replace Maya Angelou. I, too, knew why the caged bird sings. And I’d perhaps someday write poems that people other than Mom and Dad would enjoy.
Of course, besides that first poem, I wrote sentences like “See Pepper Run” and “Run Pepper Run.” Heck, I was a writer and a poet! Over the years, I took creative writing classes in college. I learned many poetic forms and developed skills in writing poetry with longer lines, rhythm, and meter. However, the assignments I enjoyed writing the most were the short stories with plots. I still write poems when I feel inspired. As a child, I was a dreamer and believed that someday I’d be winning awards like Maya Angelou, Edgar Allen Poe, or Langston Hughes.
By 2011, I had stopped writing poetry and dreaming of being a “Little Maya” and traveling the world. Instead, I’d become more like an Ebenezer Scrooge. My “bah humbug” translated to a need to see more Christ into the Christmas season. I desired to change the world. Therefore, with the help of talented friends, we produced A Party Fit for a King, a dinner theater, where Jesus was honored at his birthday party. It was a smashing success, and the community loved it. It did not entirely change the world, but it helped me get my Christmas groove back. Then in 2016, my digital path crossed with that of Chandler Bolt, who claimed anyone could write a novel in 90 days. I took his challenge. Two-hundred eighty-six pages and 80,000 words later; Grace Under Siege was born. And the rest, they say, is history. I am considering and outlining a sequel. I had hope that my debut novel might change someone’s world. I’d read this is the objective of successful authors. I will continue trying to change the world, in some small way, through my literary work.
