~ My Five Books So Far ~

"Silence of Islands," a book of poetry, is my fifth and latest work. I considered including more poems, even publishing two volumes, but decided on quality over quantity; so only my best poems are presented here.
But the collection’s not for the faint of heart. If you’ve never suffered, questioned the darkness of night, or searched the horizon for direction, it might not be for you. Still, the poems are meant to reassure, and to remind us that life is a crazy mix, and ever evolving.
But poetry’s only part of my passion for the written word. On a lighter note, my first book, "I Did Inhale—Memoir of a Hippie Chick," is a wild romp. Through most of the book, I’m ages 18 to 21, and rolling through a slew of antics, unorthoxed travel, and unruly love. This 330-page adventure is fast-paced, unpredictable, funny, honest, and true to its time. It’s been my best-selling title until the poetry came along, and Amazon reviewers say they "wished it didn’t have to end."
"Stars in Our Eyes" is twenty true stories about Hollywood, the artists’ life, ambition, spirits, and coincidence. 'The hippie chick goes Hollywood' could be the subtitle—as that same character now fields the actress life, love perplexities, and more travel but no longer by thumb. Dedicated to The Artistes, "Stars in Our Eyes" is a tribute to the sacrifices, dreams, beauty, and truth that propel the creative soul.
"Expedition Costa Rica" is a journal kept through an arduous trek through the rainforest, and takes you where you’ll likely never go, and through all sorts of unexpecteds. I was elated to be invited on this trip, blessed to survive it, and stunned my journal didn’t drown
in the rushing waters constantly drenching my backpack. Emerging from the jungle, the manuscript was already almost complete. For this book, Amazon reviewers love the vivid descriptions and the chance to take a huge adventure in their chair.
"Some Swamis are Fat" (with its adorable cover) was the sixth book I wrote but the first published. A spiritual quest of sorts, it’s a deep and shallow dive into life’s questions—the journal of a yoga teacher in Santa Monica. Journaling through this passage of time, I always felt I actually 'got somewhere,' so I decided to share the message. Without spilling the beans, my late-night musings led me, ultimately, to a better place. And going forward, I was able to approach life with more certainty and calm.
I used the pen name Ava Greene for 'Swamis,' mainly because my hippie book was coming next and I couldn’t yet own the shabby behavior to be revealed. But hiding behind a pen name, in my case, became like hiding from myself, LOL; so I elected to own my trespasses and blame them on 'youth.' Anyway, as I always say, the worst experiences make the best stories.
My next book is slated for 2021. "Nicaragua Story—Back Roads of the Contra War" details my journalist days during an unprecedented moment in Nicaraguan history. I like offering readers a time and place they might not otherwise experience, and a war zone is unlike anything. Through the journaling and interviewing, the ironies and drama of the war come across, as does the passion of an amazing populace. I evolved personally, too—crossing the country, talking to the people at every bend in the road. The story I gathered wasn’t at all what I anticipated when I set out full of revolutionary fervor.
Those are my books; each stands alone, none alluding to or dependant upon the others. Though authors are frequently advised to stay with similar themes, even similar book covers, I never do! You don’t know what’s next in life, nor with my books. LMK how you like them.

Meet the Author:

W. M. Raebeck's trademarks are humorous candor, spiritual stretching, and frequent exits from the comfort zone. She lives in Hawaii, with regular Mainland visits. Her 5 books to date are true-life accounts, from the misadventures of a sugar-freak hippie chick ('I Did Inhale'), to 20 stories about art, Hollywood, and spirits ('Stars in Our Eyes'), to trekking through the Costa Rican rainforest ('Expedition Costa Rica'), to teaching yoga in Santa Monica ('Some Swamis are Fat'),* and now her poetry collection, 'Silence of Islands.' Before authoring, Raebeck was a film and television actress based in LA, London, and NYC. She went on to freelance journalism, contributing to the then-alternative world of green politics, environmental protection, U.S. involvement in Central American wars, socially conscious investing, and much more. Her articles were always accompanied by her own photography, including numerous cover stories for the LA Weekly and other papers like the East Hampton Star from her former hometown. In Raebeck's personal life, yoga and natural health (sugar notwithstanding) remain institutions. As is maintaining a zero-waste household. Animal rights and environmental activism are lifelong commitments, including all-too-frequent bird rescue. W. M. Raebeck's books are available in print and ebook worldwide, and can be ordered from any book store or library. Audio editions are in the works! For additional info, or to join the email list, visit WendyRaebeck.com. Her next book, 'Nicaragua Story—Back Roads of the Contra War,' takes a hard look at a people's war, and will be out in 2021. * 'Some Swamis are Fat' is under the pen-name Ava Greene.
