Where do you get the ideas from, when creating personalities for your characters? How to Make Your Characters Believable?
Ideas have been swimming around in my head my entire life. Sometimes, I would see a something in real life and create an entire backstory of possibilities that go with it.
It usually starts with a question. For instance, I might see a firetruck go by and wonder about the call they are on. What would it look like if one of the firemen rescues a single mom and her baby? The image of a handsome fireman comforting her and snuggling her child while she deals with the incident will come to my mind and I sometimes explore the possibilities that might make for a great story.
In the summer of 2019, we traveled to Las Vegas to take in a Lady Gaga show. The characters from my first two books, Alec and Sadie, were just taking shape in my head. They were relentless, each of their interactions playing over and over until I had pretty much written part one in my head. Then, we went to the concert and I was blown away by Lady Gaga’s talent. She really is an incredible performer.
Suddenly, I knew that Sadie, would have a musical talent and that she would be so gifted, that it put her through law school. This created a world of backstory for Sadie and a pinnacle of her character. It made for a perfect touchstone between her and Alec. When she is feels overly emotional, music comes to her head and she taps out rhythms. To others, she just seems fidgety. But Alec can read her and knows when she’s stressed or nervous.
When it comes to making them believable, I try really hard to imagine myself in the shoes of the character. Again, I ask a lot of questions to see how I can make their responses logical. Sometimes this is tricky because their personalities and experiences are so different from my own. But I have always been cursed with an obscene amount of empathy, so I try to channel that when I’m writing.
And finally, I rely on a great team of critique partners who aren’t afraid to tell me when something feels off with their character. I take that feedback and examine my work to see if it’s doing what I want it to do or if I need to make a change. Having another set of eyes really helps my editing process.
