The Hotel Under the Sand by Kage Baker
ISBN: Print ISBN: 9781892391896; Digital ISBN: 9781616960117 Published: 2009 Available Format(s): Trade Paperback and eBooks Description Nine-year-old Emma is lost at sea in a terrible storm. She awakens on a desolate island, frightened and lonely. Yet brave, quick-witted Emma will not be alone for long, as the ghost of a bellboy appears with the tragic tale of the Grand Wenlocke. More than a century ago, a brilliant inventor built a splendid Victorian resort, the Grand Wenlocke. The hotel was powered by a Difference Engine, a miraculous device that could slow down time (making your vacation just as long as you’d like). But just before it was scheduled to open, the Grand Wenlocke mysteriously sank under the sand. Now the storm that brought Emma to the island has awakened the hotel, perfectly preserved and as incredible as ever. While exploring the magical hotel, Emma encounters a kind-hearted cook and her faithful little dog, a seemingly fearsome pirate captain, and the imperious young heir to the Wenlocke fortune (should it ever be recovered). Adventure, friendship, peril, and perhaps even treasure—all these and more await Emma at the hotel under the sand.

Murder in an Irish Cottage (Irish Village Mystery #5) by Carlene O'Connor 304 pages
Published February 25th 2020 by Kensington Books SYNOPSIS: In a remote—and superstitious—village in County Cork, Ireland, Garda Siobhán O'Sullivan must solve a murder where the prime suspects are fairies . . . Family is everything to Siobhán: her five siblings; her dear departed mother for whom the family business, Naomi's Bistro, is named; and now her fiancé, Macdara Flannery. So precious is her engagement that Siobhán wants to keep it just between the two of them for a little longer. But Macdara is her family, which is why when his cousin Susan frantically calls for his help, Siobhán is at his side as the two garda rush from Kilbane to the rural village where Susan and her mother have recently moved. Unfortunately, tragedy awaits them. They find Susan, who is blind, outside the cottage, in a state. Inside, Aunt Ellen lies on her bed in a fancy red dress, no longer breathing. A pillow on the floor and a nearby teacup suggest the mode of death to their trained eyes: the woman has been poisoned and smothered. Someone wanted to make sure she was dead. But who? Devout believers in Irish folklore, the villagers insist the cottage is cursed—built on a fairy path. It turns out Ellen Delaney was not the first to die mysteriously in this cottage. Although the townsfolk blame malevolent fairies, Siobhán and Macdara must follow the path of a murderer all too human—but just as evil . . ![]()

Red Fox by Lara Fanning
Synopsis: In the 1950’s, a Siberian scientist began an experiment with one goal in mind - to breed a domesticated variation of the red fox. After ten generations of breeding the scientist had reduced the Adrenalin levels in the animal and created a tame creature named the Silver Fox. Decades later, the Australian government use this knowledge to devise a shocking plan that will end humanity as the world knows it. When Freya Walker and her family are ordered to attend a town meeting by the ruthless Biocentric government, Freya is certain something horrible will occur. The people of her town are split into four groups of people: As, Bs, Cs and Ds. Freya is the only one placed into the mysterious Bs group and transported to a ring in the bush-land where she must survive a fortnight without food, water or weapons with her new companion and fellow Bs member, Whilliam Cliff. As Freya and Whil begin to unravel the truth behind the Bs group, fighting for their freedom becomes a key part in overthrowing the Government and putting an end to their heinous plans for humanity. I am a 27-year-old Australian woman and began writing novels of all genres when I was just a girl. This manuscript, titled Red Fox, was the first novel I began writing with the sincere intent of sharing the book with the world upon its completion. I wrote Red Fox when I was twenty years old, and due to the passion I felt for the story-line, characters, and plot, the first draft was finished within four weeks of its beginning. Red Fox follows the adolescent years of a girl named Freya Walker, who has grown up in a time period rife with natural disasters, poverty, and economic collapse brought upon by the fall of the natural world and government greed. Freya discovers that the Biocentrics have developed a plan to revert modern humans into a more naturalistic state through a selective breeding program. Developing such a plotline allowed me to explore a number of gripping and compelling themes, but Red Fox asks the question that many people, today, are asking: “Where do we find balance between conserving the natural world and bettering mankind?” The themes in Red Fox revolve around loyalty, courage, hope, empathy, acceptance, and bravery, while many of the lines between good and evil are blurred. The story is highly relevant in our modern society, as the struggles that Freya and her companions face reflect those that people all across the world are now facing. The book contains subtle references to climate change and environmental degradation caused by humankind, however these are presented in a way that is open to interpretation. The novel is written in a manner that promotes personal reflection and thought. Red Fox is the first novel of a three-part series. The two following novels are titled Red Fox, Silver Fox and Earth of Foxes. and the characters within the novel – both good and evil – are far more complex and relatable than other characters from similar titles. Due to the relevance of the issues within Red Fox, I would love to see the novel read by many more young people. Red Fox is driven by an adventurous and emotive writing style, and is thought-provoking while also being refreshing, fun, and easy to read. My passion for writing, my love of the natural world, and my fondness of the kindness humans can display was poured into this novel. I would love to share that with other young people while inspiring them through the concepts and characters in Red Fox. ![]()

An examination of the legacy of the Caribbean Irish, who few know were some of the earliest settlers in the British West Indies.
![]()
The Caribbean Irish explores the little known fact that the Irish were amongst the earliest settlers in the Caribbean. They became colonisers, planters and merchants living in the British West Indies between 1620 and 1800 but the majority of them arrived as indentured servants. This book explores their lives and poses the question, were they really slaves? As African slaves started arriving en masse and taking over servants’ tasks, the role of the Irish gradually diminished. But the legacy of the Caribbean Irish still lives on. BUY LINKS: ![]()
