Chasing the Merry-Go-Round (memoir, special needs, personal growth)
194 pages Published January 14th 2018 by Boulay Press Life moves fast. Too fast for some people. This is the true story of what it's like to live in a world where you can't keep up. Bobby was ten months old when my mom and dad rescued him from birth parents who were slowly killing him. He was adopted into our family after a lengthy custody battle. Instead of that settling him, it set off a lifelong struggle to find a place to belong, a place to call home. Like an old-fashioned merry-go-round, the world moved at a speed that was just too fast for Bobby. He couldn't keep up, which prevented him from keeping a job, a roof over his head, and the basics needed to survive. The life he dreamt of was always out of reach. No one knew why. While cultural ideals of what a "normal" life looks like can distort our perspective, Chasing the Merry-Go-Round allows readers to see the world through the eyes of a person with intellectual and physical disabilities, which can often be invisible, especially at first glance. It's a story about struggle and hope, survival and resilience, and most of all, the gift of acceptance and love. ![]()
I was born and raised between two small towns in Central New York, the middle child of five, with a brother and sister older and a brother and sister younger than me. While this may not seem important to you, it seems to have shaped my personality and life (and writing) in ways I am still trying to understand.
I had this thing about financial security—I needed it. I earned a very practical B.S. in Accounting and became a C.P.A. While I have enjoyed more than 25 years of a successful career in business, the urgency to write could not be denied any longer. I began to study at the Downtown Writer's Center in Syracuse, NY and graduated from their Creative Writing PRO program. My nonfiction has appeared in several issues of Mom Egg Review, The Mountain, an Anthology published by Outrider Press, Inc. and I have contributed articles to The Post-Standard. My work has won Third Prize and Honorable Mentions in the 2012 and 2013 Soul-Making Keats Literary Competitions, as well as Third Prize in the Fiction500 contest. I’ve also completed 15 Sprint Triathlons in the last few years—trying to outwit the effects of aging and an otherwise sedentary life. I am an advocate for Narcolepsy awareness and in 2013 launched the CNY Narcolepsy Support Group. I’m passionate about serving my global and local communities and volunteer with organizations that serve those in our world who need a little extra help to keep up with this fast-paced system we’ve created. How we care for those who need help has an everlasting impact. I believe that if the basic needs of a person’s spirit, soul and body are met, it allows them the ability to keep their own corner of the world—their home—safe and prosperous for them and their family. This is all there is. Website | Facebook |Google+ |

About the Author:
When Zack Bush was growing up he spent his free time listening to jazz. Instead of imagining a career in law or medicine like so many of his classmates, the Miami native knew he would take a different path. Zack learned to play the piano and would speak with family and friends about one day owning a venue that would bring the music he loved to others. Zack is now the owner of Ball & Chain, a historic live-music venue on Miami’s famed Calle Ocho, in the heart of Little Havana. Zack and his team renovated and restored the nearly forgotten gem, famous for hosting 20th-century jazz greats like Chet Baker, Count Basie, and Billie Holiday. Today, musicians from around the world perform live on the Ball & Chain stage. Zack’s other passion is books. A devoted reader and writer, Zack’s lifetime desire to become an author has found a refreshed source of inspiration as the father of two-year-old son Ace and baby daughter Ava. ABOUT VICKI COBB
Vicki Cobb is the well-known author of more than eighty-five highly entertaining nonfiction books for children. Ever since 1972, when HarperCollins first published Science Experiments You Can Eat, Cobb's lighthearted approach to hands-on science has become her trademark for getting kids involved in experiences that create real learning. It is no surprise that she is known as the "Julia Child of hands-on science." Currently, she is becoming increasingly popular as a speaker to children and adults as educators search out sources for materials and activities that promote learning. Today's popular buzz words in education--"hands-on-science," "experimental learning," "out-come based," "multi-disciplinary" and critical thinking" are embodied in Vicki Cobb's work.Vicki Cobb credits her outlook on education to her mother's forward-looking thinking. From kindergarten to sixth grade she attended The Little Red School House in Greenwich Village. Her early education was a joyful experience of hands-on activities, field trips, reading children's literature (not textbooks), creative projects, and a kind of portfolio evaluation that today's educators realize are the most powerful tools for producing individuals who have a lifetime love of learning. According to Cobb her books "allow me to recreate the joy of learning I experienced in elementary school for myself, forever." Vicki Cobb graduated from Barnard College with a major in zoology and went on to get a Master's degree in Secondary Science Education. After early careers as a laboratory researcher and science teacher, she became a full-time writer of science books for children. Light Action! Amazing Experiments in Optics represents her life as both author and parent. Her coauthor is her son Josh, and optical engineer and the illustrator is her son Theo, an artist and art director. Vicki is a charter member of the award-winning group blog Interesting Nonfiction for Kids (I.N.K.) and she is the founder and president of Ink Think Tank, LLC, a company of the best nonfiction authors around, in all disciplines K-12, dedicated to bringing the nonfiction literature into the classroom. She is also a regular blogger for Education Update and the Huffington Post where she regularly questions the state of education, literacy, and the strange absence of using nonfiction literature in the classroom Be sure to go to her Website For WONDERFUL Hands on Activities for "Kids".
