  • SYNOPSIS:
  • Rebecca stared hard into the darkness, barely able to make out the outline of the mountain from the light of the moon. She thought about what was behind that mountain. She knew who lived out that way. That was ranchland, worked by the parents of a boy she went to school with. He was a year older than her. Daniel Morgan. She didn't know him other than to recognize him in passing in the halls. He was one to notice. Jet black hair. Green eyes. Gentle smile. Tall and lean and just so perfectly muscular from helping on the ranch. But. He was off-limits. He was of a different social Tier, and those lines could not be crossed. Council was quite clear on this...

Rebecca glanced at her watch. It felt like she'd been waiting for much more than the three minutes that had passed since she first came to the window. 1:59 a.m. Her eyes shifted back to the darkness and the ghost of a mountain in the distance, just as a change started to occur. Jonathan was right..

"Listen, Becs. Listen closely. I know this is scary to hear, but you have to hear it. Council is up to something. They know what is going on and they are choosing not to do anything about it. This isn't a normal virus we are dealing with. It is an attack on our city..."

"You can do this, Becs. You are smart enough to figure this out. You're much smarter than I was your age. You've got a mind for solving problems. You can solve this one." He had yet again read her mind. And probably the look on her face, as well. She was always so transparent...

Pulling herself out of her memories and peeling her eyes from the mountain and the strange glow, Rebecca made her way quietly back to her room, crawled into bed, and stared at the ceiling, looking for guidance in the darkness. Looking for a way out, though she knew there was none. She had to climb a mountain.

About Desserae K ShepstonDesserae K Shepston was born in Montana, but spent her formative years in Champaign, Illinois. She blames her birth place on her affinity for mountain environments. She has lived in Chicago, Garmisch, Germany, Austin, and now, everywhere North America.

Desserae received her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She holds two Masters and a PhD from Texas State University. She left the stationary life and career behind for a life on the road in a 1993 RV, traveling North America with her best friend and four cats, and living her passion for travel and an outdoor life. She wrote her first book, Travel Cats: tips for beginning an rv journey with your feline family after working through the kinks of RV living with cats herself. Her children's book, The Adventures of Gatsby the Travel Cat in Mesa Verde was also inspired by her travels and her most adventuresome cat, really named Gatsby, who seems to have been born for road life.

Desserae has also written a Young Adult Sci-Fi Dystopian novel, The Undoing. This book did not come from her travels, but was born purely from her imagination and a love of YA and Dystopian literature.

About the Gagnon family:

The Gagnon family is an atypical, hodgepodge mix of humanity. The entire family enjoyed writing this book, with each one contributing their own input. Every child in the family has their own special story, and every one faces their own unique challenges. Stacey, the mom of this bunch, also has a blog called Ransom for Israel. She presents an honest assessment of the orphan crisis and the desperate need for families willing to adopt. After the adoption of their youngest daughter, the Gagnons started a non-profit called Lost Sparrows. Lost Sparrows is dedicated to improving the lives of orphans and those with special needs through education, proper medical care, and adoption. Their current focus is in areas of Eastern Europe and Bulgaria.
