REVIEW by LAWonder10:
Alicia Connected: The Gift is a fun, educational book for children and parents alike! The author teaches great parenting involvement and pros and cons of ciberware. While reading this exciting adventure, one may not be aware of the valuable lessons being taught. It is done with much subtlety. It demonstrates great parenting and cautions children at the same time. There is also emphasis placed on the importance of being responsible and on being a good team.
The few other children mentioned were very realistic and described well. The scenes were equally described well, enabling the reader to visualize them easily.
The Title and Cover Image are chosen well. Heather Workman's occasional sketched image, enhanced the chapters written.
This would be an ideal Summer reading or Book Club discussion book for elementary or Middle School aged children. It is a great asset to parents as well.
I offer a Five Stars rating for this book.
*This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.
Writing about cyber security
One of the unique challenges of writing this book was making sure that I wrote it in a way that is appealing to a broad audience of both children and parents while still trying to weave in topics about cyber security.
I teach secure software development at Temple University and I also lead a team that works on protecting software at a financial institution. In these roles, I have complex conversations around securing technology on a regular basis. Writing about this topic for a younger audience meant that I would have to subtly present security concerns in a way that is approachable.
For instance, in the book Alicia’s parents create a place in the house for Alicia to charge her tablet. It’s in a central location in the house and allows her parents to know that Alicia is only using it at times and locations that they approve of. This is a critical concept in protecting children from undesirable online activity. There are a lot of good things that children can use technology for, but there is an equal amount of negative things. As parents we can limit this negative activity by ensuring that devices are not in the bathrooms or bedrooms where there might be opportunity for mischief. It’s not a great thing to think about, but these things happen on a regular basis.
In the book I didn’t want to dwell on the negative activity, but instead wanted focus on some of the concepts that can help parents and children build good technology habits. Ultimately, that was the approach I took to other concepts throughout the book
