*Note from LAWonder10 concerning the Guest Post:

This is a wonderful thought from the Author/Narrator. I have a loved one who has spent much of his life running from the law and in prison. He is a wonderful person in his heart and spirit but because of many reasons, made bad choices. He had to be ready for help. He is now in his mid-life and has “hit bottom” and is ready to trust in others who care about him, and he has put some faith in himself to succeed.

Review By LAWonder10:

Author John K. McLaughlin did a terrific job in creating this story and in his narration of it.

The story is about his experience in obtaining a teaching position after he completed his college training. After his many frustrating efforts to secure a teaching position, his final effort was received by the least expected source.

He invites the reader/listener to go down the road to become more financially secure. However after he gained the additional education, he was disheartened to discover it automatically did not open doors for him. he takes us through the enlightening journey to a special prison and some of the interested characters he interacted with. He also enlightens us on the process of integrating them into society.

The entire story has a smooth, captivating essence to it. The reader/listener can easily feel drawn into the experience. John McLaughin has a pleasant voice that easily keeps the listener’s attention.

I particularly enjoyed this story, because I have someone very close to me who has been in prison and has made many bad choices but who is trying very hard to change and become responsible but has “hit many roadblocks” from those in society.

I feel much insight can be gained from reading/listening to this book.

I offer a Five Stars rating for both the book’ literary value and the narrator’s presentation.

This audiobook was gifted me with no pressure to post a positive review. This is my honest review.

This is a very touching “prayer” for me.

Thank you, John McLaughlin.

My Morning Prayer

The cover of my memoir, Lifeline to a Soul, depicts the sun rising over a hilly field illuminating the clouds above it and signaling a fresh start to a new day. I chose this cover to illustrate hope.

This sight was also what I frequently observed when I pulled into the gravel prison parking lot for a day of teaching. I welcomed the solace that the beautiful sunrise brought with it, and
embraced the short amount of time I had to take it all in, knowing these were my last minutes of peace before I entered the prison.

I have never been an overly religious person, but on those mornings it was hard not to say a silent prayer of thankfulness that I had been put in a position that suited my strengths so well and provided me with the opportunity to change a student’s mindset, and possibly his future. In my time teaching, I realized that many of the incarcerated men were there not because they were bad people, they had just made some bad choices. These choices were often a result of a bad home situation or a bad role model.

Statistics reveal that our justice system discriminates heavily against people of color, people from low-income levels, and those with a lack of formal education. Take away the opportunities that were provided to me because of the family I was born into and I could definitely see myself making these same bad choices that could have easily resulted in a prison sentence.

Teaching entrepreneurship to incarcerated men who want to make positive changes in their lives involves more than presenting them with a basic business curriculum. It also includes providing them with hope for their future and helping them realize they have choices other than reverting to the type of activity that is likely to result in another prison sentence.

I no longer teach in a prison, but I do keep in touch with some of the people I met there and enjoy celebrating their successes with them. To have possibly played a small part in their life victories is truly the most rewarding thing I have ever done and I am very thankful I was given the opportunity to do it.
