Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Nothing can stand in the way of outspoken, rule-breaker-extraordinaire; Kaddy Richston…except destiny. She set her sights on being in a rock band and leaving her small Wyoming town along with the painful memories of her past.

But destiny had other plans for her.

The observant Cole Huntington enters her life and becomes the bump in the road Kaddy is trying to pave for her future. Striking blue eyes, features to make any girl swoon, he’s everything but the new-to-town bad boy. Calm, cool, and always collected, he plans on unraveling every one of Kaddy’s dark secrets.

Kaddy is determined to undermine whatever intentions he has until she learns of a destiny she never asked for. The only person she can turn to for answers is the last person she’d want help from: Cole Huntington, who seemed to dislike her rule-breaking as much as she dislikes his rule-following.

This is a fun, captivating story.  The magical powers in the story are totally fascinating.   It captured my attention and held it throughout the story.

The characters are well-developed.  I love the way the friends are so close and have each other's backs always.

The setting is well-defined and easily visualized.  The story flows well from chapter to chapter and is easy to follow.

The title and book cover fit the story perfectly.
I highly recommend this book to others to enjoy.

I give this book a literary rating of  5/5

Excerpt #1

The rain stopped, and the wind outside had settled, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake. I didn’t have a problem with the quiet. I liked it, in fact. But this was something a little different. This was uncomfortable. The kind of stillness that came from forced proximity to someone or something that made your skin itch and your stomach roil. The kind of hush that usually set in right before a devastating storm or a natural disaster.
He did this sometimes. Just sat across from me and stared. He usually wouldn’t even say anything. I didn’t think he expected me to say anything, either. He just looked. Sometimes it lasted a few minutes, just long enough to send that chill skittering up and down my spine. Other times it would go on for hours. He’d blink and breathe and fidget, but his eyes…those remained locked on me, his unhealthy mix of sadness and lust and greed and anger crushing me to the point of breathlessness.
We were at it again, and I was just about out of patience. It was one thing to have been ripped away from my home, from my life, by that madwoman, Cora Anderson. It was another to have her poke and prod and use me as a science experiment. She’d altered my mind. Made me forget most of my life before the day I woke up a prisoner on the floor of her cold, dank cell. Those things were all bad, but having been “rescued” by this bastard and forced to stay by his side at all times? That was an entirely new level of torture.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” His tone was acidic and his jaw tight. He had a temper, this guy. I’d seen it multiple times. He’d never done anything more than scream at me, but it was only a matter of time with people like this. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt it in my bones. Maybe I’d known someone like him at home. Maybe it was just intuition.
“Yes,” was all I replied. I found that simple, one-word responses went over the best. Or, more accurately, the worst. When I said too little, he grew agitated. He wanted me to talk to him, yet the things that came out of my mouth weren’t ever what he wanted to hear. I didn’t act like he’d hoped I would, didn’t say the things he longed to hear. Some days he was determined to change me. Others, he was rabid, blaming me for not behaving like myself and demanding that I wake up.
Forget that I had no idea who I was.
“While it’s not okay, I understand.” He offered me a smile—a small, tentative twitch of his lips and gentle shrug of his shoulders. He was making an effort to be kinder today, going out of his way to speak softer and move slower.
That made me even angrier.
“You understand? Then my life is complete. All I’ve ever wanted was the understanding of a serial killer.” Even if I hadn’t been thinking about…someone else, I would have lied. The fact that I wasn’t focused on him, and him alone, drove Dylan—my savior, my captor—crazy. But the truth was, I was thinking of him. That other him. How could I not? Even if I didn’t find myself missing him every moment of every day in an almost physical way, I wouldn’t be able to put him out of my mind because he was technically sitting here across from me.

BEFORE DAWN – EXCERPT ONE
Her concern at the moment stood out in front of her – movement in the shadows. At first glance they looked like children, though when you got closer they were nothing like children. Not even human anymore. Their heads too large for their bodies, their eyes black slits on their ashen faces, their mouths extended and filled with jagged teeth. Bulbous body on stubbly short legs. They weren't intimidating, but their numbers swelled in the hundreds and they hunted in packs.
They crowded every ridge, waited behind every rock formation, watching her. One of them charged, and the others followed. Zoe pulled out her pistol and fired, catching the leader in the head. It took three steps before it realized it had no head and fell to the ground. The creatures behind it didn't seem slightly interested in their dead comrade and ran over it to get to her. She flanked the ridge and ran alongside the tracks, feeling the tremble of a hundred little suckers stomping the ground behind her. A train stood off about fifty yards, half of it hung inside a pit. It looked like the tongue of an overzealous monster had rolled out of its maw and choked to death. She slipped between railcars and shot the first critter that followed her through. It fell, blocking the entrance from those behind it, giving her a few precious seconds to scramble out into the open. Though their heads were large, they weren't that smart. Lucky her.
Hiding gave her the best chance at survival. She couldn't outrun them. Exhaustion threatened to drop her, and she didn't have enough spark to light a match. She regretted letting Jace convince her to kill him. She'd have had a better chance at survival had he been beside her.
The ground rolled under her, lifting dirt and rock into the air. It pulsed, forcing her to slow and balance her footing. She stopped when the ground in front of her caved in, expecting to be consumed by the hundreds of creatures behind her. When nothing happened, she risked turning around to find out why.
They too had stopped as if at an invisible wall. All of them. Spread out in a line, they stared past her. A swarm of gray, small, ugly things, eyes almost swallowing their faces. They'd forgotten about her.
Another rumble underground forced Zoe's attention back to the sink hole in front of her just as a serpent exploded out of the ground and skyrocketed at least a hundred feet into the air before falling in an arc toward the mass of creatures under it. Including her.
She scrambled back, hightailing it toward the little monsters who decided they didn't want to eat her anymore. They wanted to live, so they ran. She followed suit. The serpent struck the ground, smashing a dozen or so creatures to her left, causing another jolt under her. It slid along the ground, its massive scales cutting a deep path in the dirt. It snatched one of the creatures in its mouth, tearing through muscle and bone, leaving only stubbly legs on the ground. Pitching right, she turned back toward the pit. Anything would be better than remaining out in the open. If those little suckers ended up avoiding or killing the serpent, they'd remember they wanted to eat her. She had to lay low, hide, and wait it out.
But the snake had other ideas. It circled back and slammed into the train initiating its final descent into the pit. The world shimmered for a second and adrenaline fueled her. She had to get to Mecca and find answers about her life. She didn't intend on dying before she got them. She jumped into the last railcar, clawing at anything she could use as a hold.
She found nothing but air.

EXCERPT 2:
“What do you want?” I didn't dare ask how he got inside the facility. Based on his clothes and the fact he could easily be my father, I knew he didn't belong inside our walls. Had the fence fallen? The office had no windows; I didn't have a clue as to the hour or how long I'd been asleep.
“You, pretty girl.”
My stomach lurched at the man's tone and his icy touch as he inched the barrel of the gun away only to caress my cheek with the pads of his fingers.
“Get away from me,” I said through clenched teeth and sat up, backing off the cot as I tried to out maneuver him and slip out of the room.
Faster and closer to the door, he blocked my escape. My heart raced and I wiped my sweaty palms against the front of my pants. “Let me go.” I held his stare and refused to show him how afraid I felt.
“Now why would I do that?” he asked, his smile crooked with his left front tooth missing.
My eyes scoured the desk, trying to find something I could use to defend myself against this monster. Did he do something to Noelle and Toby or had they gone home? I felt hot but I knew it was the adrenaline coursing through my veins.

Goodreads | ~ Purchase: Amazon | B&N  | Google Play |  iBooks:

In this scene, Syl’s picking up Christmas Eve dinner for her and Rouen, when she’s attacked by a dark Fae from Rouen’s Winter Court
Tap, tap, scraaaaaape! Tap, tap, scraaaape! A grating, metallic shriek echoes from deeper down the dark alleyway. I clutch my bag of dinner goodies, mentally crossing my fingers.
Please don’t be a Fae catastrophe, please don’t be a Fae catastrophe, please don’t—    Shiiiiing! A glint in the darkness.
Plumes of frost off a blade of ice.
Ice. Frost. Sharp instruments. That can only mean one thing: that’s a dark Fae lurking in the shadows.
My heart slam-dancing, I set the takeout bag down in case I have to fight. “Who’s there?” I manage to keep my voice from shaking.
The rest of me? Not so much.
Even though I’ve fought hell-hounds and Môrgrim, Circuit Fae and Circuit fiends, I’m a live-and-let-live kind of girl. Unlike my Roue, I don’t actually like fighting.
Scraaaaape… chuckle, chuckle. A thin howly voice comes from the darkness. “Blood calls to blood, little princess-poppet.”
Blood calls to blood. One of the oldest dark Fae rules.
Anxiety claws at my nerves. “Who are you?” I summon my Fae-sight that lets me see auras and through Glamouries. My vision blurs for a sec, then settles, but whoever—whatever—this is, their Glamoury’s super-powerful.
    I can’t see a thing.
“Reveal yourself!” With the Fae, it’s always good to be direct. Less chance of them twisting your words around.
Another howly chuckle comes from the alley.
Okay, fine. Breathing out, I call upon the Summer in my blood, and with a tingle across my skin— whoosh! —my white flame bursts around my hands, wreathing me in purifying sleeper-princess power. The alleyway lights up in white.
    “Yaaaaarghhhh!”
A hunched figure darts from the darkness, its blade flashing for my face. Barely, I leap back, feeling the razor edge slice the very air. Holy—! That knife is crazy sharp.
I felt its kiss, even though it missed me.
From the leaping shadows comes a small, stooped figure. He barely comes up to my chest, solid, barrel-shaped, wrapped in grey rags, skin white as a fish’s belly. His wrinkled face is totally inhuman, his nose a massive red bulb dripping down over a mouth crammed full of serrated teeth. His eyes are like two huge watery poached eggs, dilated and rimmed in red.
Spiked iron boots clunk on his feet. His bloody cap bleeds down over his face in red rivulets. I can smell the copper from here. Copper, rusting iron, and rotted vegetation.
In his hand glints a blade carved of solid, glassy ice.
Shivers claw my spine. A redcap.
Redcaps are super-bad news. Cannibals, they need to dip their caps in their victims’ blood. They’re notoriously tough and vicious.
    I could take him.
But, bad fairy or not, he’s one of Roue’s people. Right. Back away slowly, Syl.
    At least there’s only one.
A cruel smile carves across the redcap’s face. His form vibrates, and suddenly, there are two, then four, then… The smell of copper, rusting iron, and rotted vegetation intensifies.
    Make that sixteen.
Great. I can’t take sixteen by myself.
Besides, this many redcaps? It’s definitely a warning from the Dark Faerie Winter Court.
It’s now that I decide the better part of valor is running my sweet patootie off. I bolt, but the redcap is fast as lightning. All sixteen of them race after me, sixteen sets of iron boots pounding, sixteen gleaming daggers glinting.
    I’m surrounded.
I dodge and duck, but there are too many.
    Use your flame, dummy!
No. I close my fists, snuffing out my magical fire. I won’t hurt one of Roue’s people.
Slash! Pain prints across my side, leaving me gasping. Every one of the redcaps howls in victory. Their bulbous noses twitch and their eyes flash red, glowing as they freak out at the scent of my blood.
These guys are the piranhas of the dark Fae world.
And they look like they’re about to go on a feeding frenzy.

She enjoys long hikes in the woods (where better to find the fair folk?), believing in fairies (in fact, she's clapping right now), dancing with dark elves (always wear your best shoes), being a self-rescuing princess (hello, black belt!), and writing diverse books about teenage girls finding love, romance, and their own inner power.

She might be planning high tea at the Fae Court right now.

GIE is multi-published, and in her role as an editor has helped hundreds of authors make their dream of being published a reality.

Conviction by Robbin J. Peterson
Paperback, 280 pages | ISBN13 9781524403287
Published June 1st 2018 by Covenant Communications 2018
Synopsiis:
After a rocky start as a missionary in Ukraine, Elder Neal Christensen is struggling to learn the Russian language and embrace an unfamiliar life away from his small Northern California town. And in an instant, a peculiar encounter with the wrong people changes everything. Dragged from his apartment in the dead of night, Neal is taken to prison and charged with the theft of a priceless museum piece. As days turn into weeks, he is thrown into a world of uncertainty where he must rely on the only person he can trust—the Savior. And as his Russian slowly improves within the prison walls, he begins preaching the gospel in the last place he imagined proselytizing. But when civil unrest erupts in Ukraine, the now-familiar routine of imprisonment is over. Neal is trapped in the chaos, and with his life on the line, his only hope of survival is escape. Yet he learns too late that there is as much danger awaiting him outside the prison walls as within. Someone has gone to great lengths to incriminate the young missionary, and they will stop at nothing to silence him forever.

MY REVIEW:(LAWonder10)
Conviction is a story about a Mormon Missionary, unsure of his readiness to serve and who is consumed with guilt over a deed he never confessed or repented of. As he arrives at the Mission Home in Ukraine, he unburdens his misdeeds to his companion and to the President.
He is assigned to a companion he thinks is great until he broke a major rule. As the young Elder Christensen, struggles with his feelings about his companion, that became the least of his worries when their apartment was raided at Four A.M. From then on he experienced a nightmare!
This is a story about judgement, misjudgment, rite of passage, repentance, restitution, endurance, faith, testimony, and survival.
The characters were created in a very believable manner and became "real". The scenes were vividly portrayed and the writing was superb! The reader's interest was not allowed to wander in the least.
Although this was directed at an L.D.S. audience, it is a novel anyone would enjoy.
The Book Title and over image were done very creatively and clever. The cover is eye-catching, yet, simple. It relates to the content very well.

I offer an energetic Five Stars rating.

I graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor degree in English Lit. My first written work of art was in sixth grade: a play called "Cinderella." I wrote it then directed it with friends in the church gym. Writing was always a creative escape for me. And now that I'm a mother with several children, that has become especially true. When I'm not writing I enjoy playing my viola in our local symphony, as well as teaching the young and old to develop their own talents, whether that be with a stringed instrument or through writing workshops.

REVIEW by Vickie:
Identity Break      - Steven H. Provost

I must say this story has a different lookout on the future.  The changes throughout the book caught me off guard. The story line so completely went in a different direction than I would have thought it would.  It was awesome to not be guess what was coming next. Well done, Steven.

The characters are well-developed and I was able to feel their emotions very well. The setting is easily visualized.  The story flows well from chapter to chapter and is easy to follow along.
I recommend this book to other readers.

I give the book a literary rating of  5/5

Sword and Verse (Sword and Verse #1)by  Kathy MacMillan
 Hardcover, 384 pages
Published January 19th 2016 by HarperTeen
Original Title
Sword and Verse
ISBN
0062324616 (ISBN13: 9780062324610)
Raisa was only a child when she was kidnapped and enslaved in Qilara. Forced to serve in the palace of the King, she’s endured hunger, abuse, and the harrowing fear of discovery. Everyone knows that Raisa is Arnath, but not that she is a Learned One, a part of an Arnath group educated in higher order symbols. In Qilara, this language is so fiercely protected that only the King, the Prince, and Tutors are allowed to know it. So when the current Tutor-in-training is executed for sharing the guarded language with slaves and Raisa is chosen to replace her, Raisa knows that, although she may have a privileged position among slaves, any slipup could mean death.

That would be challenging enough, but training alongside Prince Mati could be her real undoing. And when a romance blossoms between them, she’s suddenly filled with a dangerous hope for something she never before thought possible: more. Then she’s approached by the Resistance—an underground army of slaves—to help liberate the Arnath people. Joining the Resistance could mean freeing her people…but she’d also be aiding in the war against her beloved, an honorable man she knows wants to help the slaves.

Working against the one she loves—and a palace full of deadly political renegades—has some heady consequences. As Raisa struggles with what’s right, she unwittingly uncovers a secret that the Qilarites have long since buried…one that, unlocked, could bring the current world order to its knees.

And Raisa is the one holding the key.

MY REVIEW: (LAWonder10)
The Arnathian Island was raided, the learned ones destroyed and the rest taken into slavery. However, the learned mother of six year old, Raisa, had her flee to a friends house so her life was spared. Because of her early training, she was tested for a tutor position and prevailed. As a tutor-in-training, she met daily with the Prince Matti...Only a few years her senior. They  developed a secret , close friendship as they grew older. Would this be their undoing?

This is a tale of cruelty, betrayal, trust, change, rebellion, and Rites of Passage.

The characters were very well developed and felt real. The scenes were detailed in a way, easily visualized. The Title and the Cover image were both eye-catching and well chosen.

The Narrator of the CD's, Emily Rankin,  was very talented and did an impressive job in creating the voices for the various characters. Her voice was very pleasant to listen to.

The action was non-stop and the story foundation began building steadily until ist ended in a astounding manner.

The only negative was the verse of the God's which preceded each chapter. That was slightly vague for the most part and wasn't clearly introduced before the story began. It took the reader awhile and great thought to connect and decipher it.

I really did enjoy listening to the CDs and the ending left the reader anxious to discover more!

I offer a strong Four Stars rating.
This was gifted me with no suggestion, whatsoever, for a positive review. This is my honest review.

Book details:
Legacy in Legend (Legacy in Legend #0.5, 1, 2)
by Barbara Pietron

Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:
New from award-winning YA author Barbara Pietron, an ebook bundle of the prequel and first two books in the Legacy in Legend series.

About the series: In Thunderstone, Jeni and her family gather at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to spread her grandfather’s ashes in the Mississippi Headwaters. While they are there, they agree to meet again at various locations along the Mississippi River to remember him as they trace his journey to the Gulf of Mexico. These gatherings set the foundation for the Legacy in Legend series. Every time the family assembles, Jeni comes in contact with a malicious otherworldly element. These frightening and perilous encounters are no help in Jeni’s search for her spiritual heritage, as the supernatural entities come from a variety of mythologies and lore. Yet each vengeful confrontation makes it more important that she discover and harness whatever power she possesses so she can protect herself and her loved ones and, ultimately, end the deadly attacks.

The Legacy in Legend Series brings together mythology and suspense along with a little bit of romance when Jeni meets Shattered Ice, an apprentice medicine man. The prequel, Heart of Ice, is about Ice before he meets Jeni. Thunderstone and Veiled Existence are told from both Jeni’s and Ice’s point of view.

Legacy in Legend  Trio ebook -   Barbara Pietron
Heart of Ice,  Thunderstone and Veiled Existence

This is such a great series of books.  Barbara did a wonderful job of putting so much detail into the story, making it a lot easier to visualize.  All that is happening with the magical powers makes it very captivating.
The characters are well-developed and it's easy to get to know each of their personalities and to feel their emotions well.
The setting is also easy to visualize.  The stories flow well from chapter to chapter which makes it hard to find a place to put the book down.
I highly recommend this series of books to other readers who like fantasy, witchcraft and other fun things including a good romance.

I give this series of books a literary rating of  5/5

An Angel. A Witch. A Demon. And A Choice.

Rogan’s biggest issue concerns her uncle’s short leash with her freedom—that is of course, until she’s taken by a notorious witch, and her life begins to unravel. Soon, the supernatural beauty discovers there’s a reason her uncle kept such a tight lock on her whereabouts, and that she has more than angel blood running through her veins.
Eighteen-year-old Max is an angel, and Rogan’s mentor and guardian. He’s well aware of her tenacious inability to obey orders, though he also knows she’s a fierce fighter. ANGIE'S REVIEW:
Wings of Flesh and Bones by Cathrina Constantine is a fun and exciting fantasy that is full of surprises.  There is danger and romance and keeps you on the edge of your seat especially towards the end!
This book is a story about a girl named Rogan who is an orphan and lives with her uncle who is very protective of her and keeps her on a tight leash.  She is mentored by an angel named Max who takes her on secret missions but ultimately helped unintentionally gets her taken from home.
Cathrina Constantine does a fantastic job creating characters that come to life. This is a great read for young adults and teens who enjoy Fantasy and thrillers with a little romance.Irate it with Five Stars.

 EXCERPT!:
I’m breaking Castle’s rules. Do I care? Not really—not yet.

Rogan’s skin prickled as she snuck through the portal leading to the city, exhilarated to be patrolling on her own for once. She walked along the sidewalk on her way to Pink, a dance club for teenagers. Although, her choice in destination would not involve dancing or enjoying the hyperactive ambiance. No, she was primed and ready to release bottled-up steam threatening her peace of mind. Deviants would be mingling with humans, and she’d be there to put a stop to it.
Crisp autumn air stirred. Inhaling its musky scent, she noticed the lengthening shadows, and prayed to be home before she was missed. I’m seventeen, she thought with pride, a gatekeeper. At least, that was what she’d been training for.
Keeping her eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary, she tossed her braided hair over her shoulder, catching a few heads turning to look at her. You’d think they’d never seen a girl wearing leather and boots before.
A pungent odor pressed in on her, which stopped her in her tracks. Up ahead, blocking the sidewalk, was a giant of a man. The fortuitous encounter took her by surprise, sending her creepster vibes off the charts. With her legs rooted in a rigid stance, she flexed her fingers. As if the giant had been awaiting her arrival, he approached in a blur of motion, whipping his knuckled fist and clipping her on the chin.
Grimacing, her eyes watered as blood pooled over her tongue. She spat a mouthful onto the sidewalk and moved her throbbing jaw from side to side.
She recognized the Vorg towering over her, jutting his demon chin at a superior angle. To humans, he looked like an unnatural hulk of a man, but Rogan saw past his artificial veneer.
“Had enough, sweetmeat?” His sandpapery voice rubbed her the wrong way.
“Screw you.” Fast as a snap, she jerked her elbow, smashing him in the jaw.
