Welcome to the Book Blitz for The Heart of Aleppo By Ammar Habib Learn more about this new Young Adult release, read an excerpt, and enter the giveaway below... Why Ammar Wrote The Heart of Aleppo: Writing Playlist for The Heart of Aleppo 1. “Sadness and Sorrow” 2. “Sound of Hugh Glass” 3. “Despair” 4. “Man of the World” I personally believe that the Syrian Civil War is one of this generation’s greatest tragedies. With the way it is proceeding, it’ll be remembered by future generations in the same manner that we remember the Rwandan genocide and the Bosnian War of the 1990s. The motivation for writing The Heart of Aleppo was simple: I wished to bring more global attention to this crisis. Although the characters are fictitious, this novel accurately depicts the events that transpired in Aleppo during the summer of 2012. I hope that reading this will lead readers to have a greater understanding of the plight those in Syria face, as well as those in other war-torn regions. If this work helps garner more attention for those in Syria, then I will have considered this project a success. In an over-politicized world, my wish is for this work to humanize those we call “refugees”. The Heart of Aleppo is not about the politics of the Syrian Civil War or any other conflict. Its aim is not to convince readers to support any faction or political party. Instead, this story is about the unbreakable spirit of humanity. It is about how humanity often shows its true strength during the darkest times. I truly hope that these themes of hope and strength will resonate with readers. I know that simply writing this The Heart of Aleppo changed me as a person, and it made me more aware of everything that transpires in the world around me. Although the world will never be perfect, I believe that if we keep our faith in the human spirit and keep striving to always better ourselves and those around us, then we can create a little piece of heaven on earth. ―Ammar ![]() The Heart of Aleppo: A Story of the Syrian Civil War By Ammar Habib YA Contemporary | ebook, 235 Pages | July 26th 2018 Synopsis: After standing for over 7,000 years, Aleppo's ruin came overnight. Zaid realizes that it is in the darkest hours when humanity's spirit of hope burns brightest. Goodreads│Amazon Excerpt Two days before Nabeel leaves for the last time, I find him standing at the kitchen counter with his friend, Zakariah. I don’t know his rank, but Zakariah serves directly under Nabeel in the army and only lives two miles down the road. The two of them always seem to be on leave at the same time. Their voices are low, almost secretive, but I catch the look in Nabeel’s eye. Except back then, I didn’t recognize it. “What are you guys talking about?” Seeing me enter and hearing my voice, they both look my way before exchanging glances. That gleam in Nabeel’s eyes disappears. I excitedly run up to the two of them. “Tell me!” Nabeel looks back down at me as he stops leaning against the counter. Reaching down, he ruffles my hair. “You’re too young to know about that, Zaid.” “Aww, what’s that about? I’m not part of the group now—” My brother playfully flicks me on the forehead as he crouches down a little. “I’m sorry, buddy. Maybe next time.” “You’re always saying that.” Zakariah laughs as he comes closer to me. He puts his hand on my shoulder. “That’s just not fair, Nabeel. You’re a horrible brother for leaving Zaid out like that.” I see a concerned expression momentarily wash over Nabeel’s face. However, Zakariah glances up at Nabeel and shoots him a quick wink as he continues. “Why don’t I just tell you then?” My eyes light up. “Really! You’re the best, Zakariah.” Coming to his knees, he puts his arm around my shoulders and leans close, acting as if he is about to tell me the world’s biggest secret. “You see, Zaid, your brother and I were having a discussion about which one of us would win in a wrestling match. We all know that I’m stronger, but he just won’t admit it.” He sighs and shakes his head as he looks back at Nabeel. “But you agree with me, don’t you, Zaid?” I don’t hesitate to respond. “No way!” He moves his head back in surprise. “Huh?” “Sure you’re pretty strong, but my brother would beat you!” Zakariah is slow to reply, taken aback by the statement. “C’mon, Zaid. You do realize that I’m older than him—” “Age has nothing to do with it, Zakariah! My brother was the school’s wrestling champion. He wouldn’t lose to you.” I whip my head to look back at Nabeel. “Right, big brother?” Nabeel is slightly smiling now. With a chuckle, Zakariah rises back to his feet. “Alright, alright. Well, I best be off, Nabeel. We can finish our little discussion next time.” Nabeel shakes his hand. “Give my greetings to your folks.” “I will.” Zakariah grabs my shoulder and gives it a squeeze. “See you, Zaid—no, sorry: Dr. Zaid.” Did he really just call me that? How did he know? Hearing Zakariah’s footsteps grow faint, I turn back to Nabeel. He opens the fridge door and rummages through it. “You told him?” I ask. Nabeel doesn’t look my way. “I tell everyone.” I watch him pull out a pound of chicken meat rolled up in brown paper as he turns back to me. “Aisha is visiting her parents tonight and Abbi and Ummi are having dinner with friends. So looks like it’ll just be you and me.” Nabeel shoots me a wink. “I’m going to make some shwarma for dinner. Just the way you like it: tomatoes, lettuce, onions, lots of chicken, and even more spices.” He starts setting the ingredients on the countertop. “I went by Sohail’s shop today. The mangoes he was selling were ripe, so I picked some up. We can have them for dessert. That is if we have room.” He looks back at me with a smile, but it fades when he sees my expression. “What’s wrong, Zaid?” I glance at the ground before replying, “I don’t think I want to be a doctor anymore.” “Why not?” “…I don’t think I can.” He takes a few steps towards me before crouching down to come to my eye level, urging me to continue. “Ms. Farooq said I’m not smart enough.” “She did?” “I got the lowest score in the class on the last math test. She said I’m not cut out for it.” “I didn’t realize Ms. Farooq could tell the future.” I don’t respond. “Did you tell Abbi or Ummi?” I shake my head. He takes a deep breath and glances down at my feet. His eyes look like he’s weighing something, wondering if he should say it or not. When he does speak, his voice is different. It’s no longer speaking to me as his younger brother but as his friend. “You know, Zaid, Zakariah was joking about what we were talking about.” “Really?” He nods before his gaze focuses back on me. “Not even a few weeks ago, my soldiers and I were in a bit of a… well, situation.” “What happened?” “We were in Homs. The people we were fighting—the rebels—had heavy control of some neighborhoods. We were trying to take them back. It was…” A silence ensues as he searches for the word. “Difficult.” Nabeel pauses. “Some soldiers were pinned. The army tried an airstrike to break the rebel lines. It was a heavy bombardment that leveled entire streets. The cost was high. But we couldn’t break their lines.” I don’t interrupt him. “Our intelligence said it was a lost cause. We were ordered to abandon the soldiers. They said we would lose more men than we would save. But even the army’s ‘intelligence’ doesn’t know everything.” He looks away. “Zakariah and I disobeyed our commanding officer. As did our men. Those soldiers that were pinned weren’t just men. They were my friends… my brothers. And I would never abandon them, even if it led to…” For a moment, his eyes again display that same gleam, but it disappears as quickly as it came. His gaze again meets mine. It’s firmer this time, stronger. “It doesn’t matter what people say, Zaid. It doesn’t matter what the facts say. All that matters is what you say. And, maybe more importantly, what you do.” I hang on his words, unable to say anything. “Why do you want to be a doctor, Zaid?” “I’ve always wanted to.” “But why?” “Because… I don’t want to see people suffer. I… I want to be the one to help others. I want to save lives, make a difference and put others before myself. I want to make this world a better place. Just like the Imam always talks about.” Nabeel smiles. “Never forget that. And never go back on your word. No matter what happens. Please never forget one thing, Zaid: I love you. No matter the circumstance—no matter if I’m so far from you that you may never see me again, know that I’m with you.” He presses his finger against my heart. “I believe in you, Zaid.” ![]() ABOUT the AUTHOR: Ammar Habib is a bestselling and award-winning author who was born in Lake Jackson, Texas in 1993. Legend of Me by Rebekah L. Purdy
Publisher: Month9Books | Release Date: July 24, 2018 SYNOPSIS: No one should ever go into the woods alone. Brielle has grown up listening to tales of a beast that attacks humans, leaving behind only a scattering of bones and limbs. It’s probably the elders’ way of keeping little children in line, but it doesn’t explain her grisly premonitions of blood, claws, and severed heads. But when Brielle finds a mangled body in the woods, she begins to wonder if the grim stories may actually be true. Soon, Lord Kenrick, Knight of the Crowhurst Order, arrives asking questions about the legendary monster. Brielle’s attraction to him is immediate and undeniable. She volunteers to help him search for clues to the creature’s existence, despite her suspicions about his timing. As her seventeenth birthday approaches, Brielle’s nightmares worsen and more villagers go missing. If Brielle doesn’t figure out the connection between Kenrick, the beast, and her visions, more people will die. As Brielle falls deeper in love with Kenrick and deeper into the snares of the abominable beast, she’ll become part of a legend so great, no one will ever question its validity again. EXCERPT 1: Darkness spilled across the sky like wine on a tablecloth as silhouettes slithered over the grass toward Margaret Shepherdess. She shivered, pulling her cloak tighter. Her gaze shifted to the sheep dotting the hillside then to the tree line separating the woods from the pastures. A lamb darted away from the forest border; its bleating cries broke through the stillness as it ran across the open field, its legs nearly buckling beneath it. Margaret jumped. Her fingers tightened around her wooden staff, heart thundering in her ears. She listened intently as her hand moved to the slingshot secured beneath her belt, but all she heard was the incessant croak of frogs. Thick clouds drifted overhead, blotting out of the moon. The whole pasture sank into shadow. The frogs went silent. A branch snapped in the forest and Margaret froze. “Myron Stable Hand, if you’re trying to scare me, it’s not going to work.” Margaret twisted around. Her eyes followed the edge of the woodland, but it was too dark to see anything. “Myron. You can come out now.” She took a hesitant step toward the trees. The odor of rotten meat clung to the air and she covered her mouth as acid seared the back of her throat. Perhaps it was a deer carcass. A low guttural growl sounded, followed by a loud crash. Margaret stumbled back, trying to free her slingshot. Wolves, it must be wolves. No wonder the sheep ran to higher ground. Goose pimples prickled her skin as her pulse quickened. At last, lunar beams pierced the cloud cover. She screamed. An elongated face, filled with teeth gnashed at the air in front of her. Dirty rags hung from an emaciated body and the stench of death filled her nostrils. Claws slashed Margaret’s chest, ripping her flesh. Blood seeped through her dress as she scrambled to get away. Margaret’s shrieks pierced the night as the beast tore through her back. The angry chomp of fangs crunched down on her bones. She fell to the ground, unable to move. Her nails dug into the dirt, the pain increasing with every moment. Her frantic cries for help echoed as panic took hold, but no one came. Soon only the sound of gurgling came from her lips as she fought for breath. The creature flipped her over with long gnarled fingers. Scarlet eyes burned like hellish fires. With a howl, the monster sank its dagger sharp teeth into her neck, shredding the soft tissue. When it pulled back, flesh hung from its mouth like strands of wet string. Tears trickled down her face. Her last vision was of the beast, hovering over her, and a strange ghostly figure of a woman standing behind it. “The beast has come again,” the woman whispered. “He is almost here.” Then all went dark. ![]()

With the moral core of human civilization hanging in the balance, she must risk her shot at history, her family, and her life to prevent the schemers from forcing their nefarious brand of salvation upon the solar system. MY REVIEW: (LAWonder10) For all Star Wars Fans, Beyond Cloud Nine is the first an exciting new series , that will certainly be made into a movie series. The setting begins at the fictional time of 2247 CE. A young woman is among the top fighter pilots of the United Nations run by a council. However, Brook has an attitude, is driven by guilt, and will not be content until she is Number 1! Brooke's twin sister living in Chicago, has her own agenda. Although her attitude is much better, she is equally driven to be the best Reporter. After a breach of ethics and conduct, Brooke finds herself at the mercy of her twin, after years of no correspondence. The twins find themselves caught up in what they thought was the fulfillment of their individual dreams, but is it really as it seems How can there be a futuristic space story without an endearing computer? "BOB" fills that role very well. The author has created a captivating new view into possibilities of the future. His views have merit. The characters are believable, well-defined and the scenes portrayed quite well. Although there must be credible background imagery, I feel too much information was given, making it slightly difficult for the average individual to understand. However, it would be valuable in creating a movie for it. Some scene descriptions were somewhat difficult to visualize. The Book Title is very "catchy" and, both, the Title and Book Cover are eye-catching. Notr: This reviewer enjoys Science Fiction, but is not a Star Wars Fan. *Parental concern: Innuendos are made in two places that may be offensive to those believing in a Supreme being. It also questions the validity of "Faith". This story is filled with fun fantasy and lots of magical powers. The characters are well-developed and it's easy to feel their emotions. The fear, anger, sadness, joy, surprise and trust were all strong emotions felt throughout the story. The story is totally captivating. It caught and held my attention throughout the entirety of the book. It is easy to follow and flows well from chapter to chapter. The title of the book and the book cover were perfect for the story. Is there any reality to these disturbing dreams? Several people seem interested in her...Many are ending up dead! This mystery/Suspense tale will keep the reader "on the edge of his/her seat" until the very end of the story! There are several unexpected "twist". The only problems I had with this novel was:(a) It is a stretch" to apply the Title to this story. However, it does, weakly, "fit". The Book Cover is okay, though. (b) The ending was slightly weak. The drama steadily built, very dramatically, but then ended quickly. (c) A few brief occasions when Murphy was reflectively thinking, it was slightly confusing to the reader. As the story progressed, it became clearer-the character and the scenes were both portrayed well. I offer a Four Star rating. *This was gifted me with no requirement for a positive review. Goodreads | ~ Purchase EXCERPT: I crank up Mumford & Sons on my iPod and pull up the Boyfriend Whisperer Enterprises files on my tablet. No need to play it subtle. He likes spicy food, so Red Hots are an obvious choice, in a heart-shaped tin. What should the card say? Something super flirty. “Let’s heat it up on Valentine’s.” No … “spice it up.” I jot that down and move on to my next client. Just as I’m picking out a sweet YouTube link I want her to send her BF-to-be, Coach Reilly pulls my earbud out and scares me half to death. “Malloy! I’m talking to you. What are you working on?” I slam my tablet shut. “What? Homework. Sorry. What do you need?” She shoves my backpack to the floor and plops down beside me. “Let’s talk about tomorrow. We’re expecting scouts from all over. Rumor has it someone from U Conn might even turn up.” She pauses as if to gauge my reaction, so I force a smile. “U Conn? Wow. That’s great.” She leans in. “There’ll be a lot of buzz in that arena. Parents, coaches, other players. They’ll all be talking about the scouts and about you and your future. Here’s the thing: You need to ignore them.” “Ignore them.” “Exactly. You have one job tomorrow, and that’s to play the best game Alexis Malloy knows how to play. Run, pass, shoot, rebound. That’s it. The rest is static. Ignore the static.” “Got it. Static.” Coach furrows her brow. “You nervous?” “Maybe a little.” She pats my arm as she stands. “A little nervousness is good. You’ve got this, Malloy. You can do it.” I smile and slump back into my seat. The fact is, I’m not at all nervous. I only said that so she wouldn’t launch into a lecture about being too cocky. Wicked Woods Omnibus 6-Book Series : Wicked Woods, Shimmer, Silver, Silence, Sight, Shifter by Kailin Gow
I must say, I loved this series. What an imagination to create so many fantasy figures. Fun to see how they used different types of magic. There was so much going on in the story that it did a great job of holding my attention. It flowed from chapter to chapter really well and was easy to follow. I loved the characters, they were all well-developed and I enjoyed getting to know their personalities. Some of my favorites were Briony, Kevin, Fallen, Aunt Sophie, George, Maisy and Steve. I could totally picture myself there with them. The titles fit the story perfectly. I give this series of books a literary rating of 5/5 written by vickie ![]()

Superhero High - T H Hernandez
I really enjoyed reading this story. So much fun with the different super powers. There is a lot going on throughout the story which held my attention from the beginning to the end. The characters are well-developed and I liked their different personalities. My favorite characters were of course Ren and Annarenee. They had a great connection and it was fun to see how their friendship grew. It is easy to feel the emotions of all the characters. The story flows well from chapter to chapter and it is easy to follow along. The title of the book fits the story well and the cover of the book is also a perfect match. I would recommend this book to other readers. *Warning: There is a small amount of profanity in the book. I give this book a literary rating of 5/5 written by vickie ![]()

EXCERPT: Staring out of the tinted bulletproof windows of the limo, I can't tell for sure how gray the clouds are that gather above us. I hope it doesn't rain again. It's unsettling to come back here. To see the complete destruction of the California ocean side town that I once called home—Avilene Beach. It's a ghost-like cemetery of charred, crumbling homes and palm trees turned askew and broken apart. Just like me. This is the direct result of my decisions. Wind skitters across the surface of black puddles racing by, reminding me of the oily blood of the Ma'tiok. It's been just one week since my old life, my human life, ended and this new one exploded into existence. Acid rises in the back of my throat, burning hot, and I crush my jaw together hard until my lips press into a thin line. Why did Eenoki pick me? "Priestess, do you understand what I said?" Katok's sharp telepathic tone startles me out of my immersive guilt. "Stick to the speech the High Priestess provided. Yes. I got it." I swallow hard against the rising bile being pressed there by the trembling in my gut. What if this press conference makes things worse? "Allison, don't worry so much. You'll be safe." Stephen reaches out to me and Katok snatches his hand midair, crushing it in his huge taloned palm. "Ow! Dammit, Katok!" Stephen clutches his wounded limb. I swear, that's almost a smirk on the massive Vongjar commander's leopard-like face. Katok's lips curl back menacingly to reveal his white fangs and piercing resolve. Stephen knows better than to try and touch me. I sigh, and can't help but glare at Stephen who sits across from me. His dark muscular arms are crossed hard against his white Navy button up shirt. Even with the blotchy purple and yellow bruises healing across his tense neck and face, he's still handsome. But his haircut, shaved in military style, makes me miss his longer tawny surfer hair. "Stephen, if I can't be the bridge between the Alliance and Earth, our world won't survive the Ma'tiok. You understand that, right?" His angry blue eyes lock on me, softening, and he smiles. I look away and clench my fists on the cold, empty, black leather seats beside me. We can never make it work. He'll never understand what I am, or what I have to do. I have to serve the Alliance to have any chance of getting them to fight the Ma'tiok on the ground, instead of glassing the Earth like they have so many other infected worlds. The blue tint to the air thickens as we get closer to our destination. What if I had just gone with Z'iram and left Earth behind? Maybe he would have spared those who died here. No. If we left, there would be no hope of the Alliance helping this world fight back. Any other choice would have meant the total destruction of Earth without any chance of survival. I know Eenoki is right, but the truth still hurts. The High Priestess will arrive soon, aboard the planet killer Star Fire, to judge and test me. This speech is another test, one that I can't afford to mess up. If Kiobaan doesn't publicly declare me a Priestess, of Earth, then there will be no ambassador to the Alliance or protection for our world. I take a deep breath and straighten the pale gown Tarem made me wear, irritated at how ridiculous I look. Not that I own any clothes besides what the Alliance has provided me. Before we left, my reflection shocked me. The way they pinned up my long auburn waves under a small crystalline hairpiece that stands a few inches high, reminded me of my vision of Aakina. The memory Eenoki shared with me from her last day alive, before she and her world were wiped out by the Ma'tiok. "How much longer Katok, until there are too many Ma'tiok for your troops to handle" His golden eyes widen. "They multiply too quick. The ground troops struggle to do more than contain them. Our current calculations project ten Earth days at most. We need Alliance support to do any more." Katok shakes his head. Ten days left? It's only been twenty one since the Ma'tiok arrived! Stephen leans closer. "He's not telling you the whole story. Admiral Hurst says that there are over ten thousand Ma'tiok and infected humans on the ground, and that combined kills between Katok's troops and the US military don't even equal the rate that they're multiplying at. We are losing every day." ![]()
