Are you one of the 48% of employees worldwide who don't like their jobs? Do you feel constantly stressed at the office? Or maybe you're just feeling "blah" about your job and want to bring some life back into your workplace. If you talk to anyone about their careers or jobs these days, most of the time you won't hear positive stories or excitement. GUEST POST: How Long Did It Take You to Write Your Book?
This question comes up constantly whenever someone finds out about Joy to You and
Me (At Work!) and people are always surprised when I answer “Six weeks.” But that’s
not 100% accurate. I’ll explain.
Before you ever send a query letter for a non-fiction book to an agent or publisher, you
first have to create a book proposal. I never knew this until I took “How to Write and Sell
Your Non-Fiction Book Proposal” from Jen Sincero, author of You are a Badass and other
I took an entire week off of work to take this course in July of 2017 and it taught me A
LOT! This proposal must include:
1. Your bio
2. Your promotion plan (authors typically have to do 70% of the work or more to
promote a book!)
3. A market analysis
4. A list of chapters
5. An outline
6. AND 2-3 sample chapters
My proposal alone was 42 pages! But as you can see, it gave me an excellent guide to
help me write my book quickly. Tell-Tale Publishing sent me my contract on December
22, 2017 and gave me a February 1, 2018 deadline!
While I did have to take advantage of some “wiggle room” on that deadline due to our
entire family coming down with the flu in January, I really did complete the 200-page
book in six weeks total thanks to that proposal. And I had a blast doing it!
