The Lady of Astoria Abbey by Anita Stansfield

SYNOPSIS
per Goodreads:
Bess leads a quiet life, intent on easing the burdens of her widowed father. She acts as maid, cook, and assistant in his medical practice—but she is wearied by the thankless work and her father’s lack of kindness. And then a miracle happens. Lady Agatha Buxton of Astoria Abbey is seeking a physician for her ailing son, Hugh, and, sensing that Bess is trapped in her situation, offers the young woman a position as nurse. Despite Bess’s father’s objections, she accepts—and her life is forever changed. Bess and Hugh enjoy an immediate bond of friendship, which quickly blossoms into love. Despite his dire prognosis, the couple makes the bittersweet decision to wed, embracing what little time they have. Their tender union ushers in a season of both joy and heartbreak, and Bess discovers greater meaning in life than she’d ever imagined. As she’s confronted with the sorrow of living without Hugh, Bess finds herself at a crossroads—will she have the courage to trust her heart and allow herself to love again?

MY REVIEW: (LAWonder10)
When Bess was twelve, she lost her mother to an illness which her father, a doctor, could never get over. No matter how hard she tried, her father never showed her gratitude nor kindness. Now a young woman past eighteen and she began to feel there was more in life she wished than cooking, cleaning and assisting her father.
Lady Astoria called for Dr. White and his daughter to come to her estate. Upon their arrival, Lady Astoria greeted them. Her son, who had a heart defect, wanted to spend his last weeks, or days, at his country home of Astoria. While her father was examining Hugh, Lady Astoria pulled Bess aside and offered a proposition which could change her life forever if she accepted. Would she truly have the courage to accept?
This is one of talented author, Anita Stansfield's best novels. There is sufficient intrigue, romance mystery and suspense, all in on very well written novel, to keep the reader totally engrossed.
The characters feel like close acquaintances and the scenes easily visualized,\. The book title and cover are "fitting" but nit as impressive as they could be.
I offer a Five Stars rating.
