Book Description:
Caught between love and revenge, Jake has one chance to live up to the man his uncle was.
Earth crashed into interstellar politics as a lightweight, lagging so far behind other planetary weapons systems everyone feared they wouldn’t survive first contact with other worlds without quick action. By 2185, Earth had united itself into five geographic sectors and developed a defense system powerful enough to keep aggressors at bay—for now, at least.
Jake Saunders became a Legion soldier to honor the memory of his war hero uncle, who was brutally murdered in front of him when he was still a young teen. Fast forward a few years, and Jake and his best friend Cal have been tasked with escorting Cal’s older sister Diane to become Earth’s ambassador on a far-off planet. It’s the opportunity of Diane’s career, very likely a lifetime post. But for Jake, that could mean a lifetime’s heartbreak. He has loved Diane since they were kids, and every step closer to that ambassador assignment is a step closer to goodbye.
But somebody is after more than Earth’s defense, and Jake, Cal, and Diane are on a trajectory to crash headlong into that dangerous plot. Somebody wants to play Earth against its most immediate threat, Craton, and convince both to develop super weapons—and he’s working with the person who killed Jake’s uncle all those years ago. When he reappears on Jake, Cal, and Diane’s journey to the ambassadorship, Jake is faced with difficult choices to look out for his friends and honor his uncle’s memory.

Review By LAWonder10:
The Brighter the Stars is a story that spans from the late 2100s to the early 2200s.Earth has become a part of a universal alliance. Jake’s Father was killed while in military service when Jake was little more than an infant. His mother died, too. His Uncle Ben and Jane were the only parents he knew. As a young boy, he also watched his Uncle Ben shot down and killed. He swore then he would revenge his Uncle’s killer when he grew up.
Jake’s best friend, Cal, was like a brother. Cal’s sister, Diane, did not feel like a sister. She was jake’s love all of his life. He just did not know how to tell her and feared she did not feel the same about him.
They all worked hard training in government programs. One mentor, and an officer, took Jake under “his wings” and became more of a father figure than an officer. He was in a government position to give assignments to them. One particular assignment changed many lives, including theirs.
Thus, the crux of the story “takes off”.
The narrator, Joel Simler, did a very good job in narrating the book. He was most consistent with the use of the various voices for each character, he was effective in placing emphasis in all the right places.
The point of confusion I experienced. is that I get I was listening to the very same book as Darker the Stars. There is only a slight variation between the two books with the same story.
I did prefer The Brighter the Stars over Darker the Skies because it began from the earliest part of his life and systematically moved forward. Darker the Skies was more back and forth through time, as Jake reflected on earlier life and experiences. It felt more disjointed while Brighter the Stars was “smooth sailing” and never confused the reader/listener.
Again, the characters are well-portrayed and feel realistic. The scenes were defined well and quite easily visualized.
I offer a Four and a Half Stars rating for the story.
I offer Four Stars rating on Joel Simler’s performance.
This audiobook was gifted to me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review
