My Inspiration For A Unicorn-Themed Alphabetical Periodic Table Book

By Sybrina Durant

I consider myself a unicorn authorpreneur. I write unicorn books, and on my blog, I manage a collection
of unicorn-related items like hundreds of unicorn books by other authors, hundreds of unicorn-themed
gifts and at least one hundred Unicorn Reader/Writer meme tee shirts. This collection is categorized by
Little Kid, Middle Kid; and YA and Older readers. You could say I’m all about unicorns and their ability to
capture the imaginations of millions of people and to encourage them to reach their dreams.
The Inspiration for the Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically By The Metal
Horn Unicorns book comes from my previously published Journey To Osm unicorn books. The twelve
main characters are metal-horned unicorns with magic powers loosely based on the properties of the
metals of their horns and hooves. For instance, in the novel, Cuprum, the Copper Horned Unicorn’s horn
has the power to purify water. As her powers grow through the story she finds she can even control
tornadoes and make river waters dance like ballerinas.
In this unicorn-themed alphabetical periodic table book, the twenty-six unicorn elementals also have
magical powers fancifully based on the real properties of the metals and other elements from the
periodic table that they are introducing to readers. Cuprum retains her ability to purify water in this
book and readers learn that is because throughout history, copper vessels were thought to kill harmful
bacteria in water. Today we know for a fact that copper IS anti-bacterial.

This book has pages full of information that might not be easily absorbed, especially in one sitting. The
picture above is from one of the book related activities that I developed to make it easier for students to
remember all of the information presented in the book. This activitiy, which is sold separately, is called
Create Your Own Unicorn Elemental. It comes with colorful elemental sample cards representing each of
the twenty six unicorns in the book, plus a blank research sheet, a blank unicorn elemental sheet to fill
in and color, and a blank story page.

Students fill out and answer questions on the study sheet, while also coloring and labeling blank unicorn
templates with element information. Projects culminate in the creation of an elemental-inspired
narrative. This combination of research and creativity allows students to develop an appreciation for the
sciences in a fun, engaging manner.

Magical Elements from the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically by the Metal Horn unicorns is a book
that kids will want to read over and over again. Each time they browse through it they are sure to learn
something new about the elements that make up our world. You can see the products of those
elements everywhere… in buildings. . .transportation…communications. . .medicines and even in the
food you eat! All technology and everything that makes life modern come from the magical elements in
the earth, water and the air. Now, that’s inspiring!
