Book Description:

Cooking a sumptuous meal is an act of love. An act of grace. An art and passion Gina inherits from her grandfather —a French chef felled by a robber’s bullet.

Raised in a marginal neighborhood, she’s keen to taste life in the world where she’s been chosen to cook. A scintillating world of wealth and privilege, great food, new challenges and fascinating friends.

But beneath this new world, unexpected danger lurks. Gina’s passion for cooking is all she has to help her navigate it.

Amidst her culinary adventures, she befriends the pastry chef, worldly loyal Marcia. She falls in love in different ways with two very different men. Leon, a playboy, is rich, charming, and carefree but honest, complicated, and devoted to his legacy.

Serious and idealistic Brent is a lawyer turned brooding detective. Haunted by the many violent crimes he has worked on, he prefers to be alone.

Can the lessons Gina learned about cooking and life help her survive and thrive in this other world of privilege, pleasure, and menace?

Review By LAWonder10:

Sugar and Spice and All Those Lies is a story, unfortunately, many can relate to in today’s society.

It is primarily about a girl’s passion to delve into what she really enjoys, even at a difficult cost to her. Her unique appearance, her dedication, and talent have gotten her into one of the most elite diners in the area. She, Gina, dedicates long hours, six days a week to proving herself and creating her own new delicacies.

One of the few regulars, who can afford to be, is intrigued by her and determinedly pursues her.  She has heard many negative things about him and refuses to concede. Will he ever change her mind?

An unexpected occurrence happened, bringing Police Detective Lieutenant Hansen to her door. Did he feel the sparks she did when they shook hands?

Gina’s passionate, hectic existence becomes more so as her past and present friendships collide into her non-inclusive life.

There are situations that include so many emotions, situations, and issues that are occurring in today’s society. At the end of the book, there are also sources one can turn to for help in several of the issues mentioned.

The characters were definitely portrayed in a realistic way. It was easy to forget this was fiction and the characters and happenings were not real. The reader/listener could easily connect with the individuals and situations.

The Cover on my copy was attractively done and depicted the story in a more intriguing manner. but too dark to be eye-catching. However, the new copy is brighter and more eye-catching but less appealing. The Title is very fitting.

There were two sex scenes that were brief and mostly non-explicit, It caused me to wonder why authors would bother with turning many away with such brief explicitness. Effective words of love and passion would have been more desirable to many and increased some recommendations.

This was well-written and compelling.

I rate this book with Four and a Half Stars.

This book was gifted me with no pressure to post a positive review. This is my honest review.

Meet the Author:

Evy Journey writes. Stories. Blogs (three sites). Cross-genre novels. She’s also a wannabe artist, and a flâneuse (an ambler).

Evy studied psychology (M.A., University of Hawaii; Ph.D. University of Illinois) initially to help her understand herself and Dostoevsky. Now, she spins tales about multicultural characters dealing with problems and issues of contemporary life. She believes in love and its many faces.

Just as she has crossed genres in writing fiction, she has also crossed cultures, having lived and traveled in various cities in different countries. Find her thoughts on travel, art, and food at Artsy Rambler.

She has one ungranted wish: To live in Paris where art is everywhere and people have honed aimlessly roaming to an art form. She visits and stays a few months when she can.
