– Best Laid Plans - An excerpt from ‘my life as an Export Sales Manager’ Ninety-nine per cent of my export sales trips consisted of taxi rides to airports, hours waiting, a few hours flying, rarely comfortably, and then more time spent in passport queues and baggage halls. Usually, it was then another taxi ride to the hotel, arranged by the company Travel Agent. Occasionally I was afforded the comfort of being picked up at the airport by a representative from an existing appointed distributor/agent. There would usually follow meetings at the distributors’ offices, perhaps with staff training sessions, and end-customer/user visits which helped establish the status of the agent and perhaps assisted in the winning of some contracts. This could typically take one, two or three days and often the programme allowed little if any free time for exploration of whichever county I was visiting. The exceptions were memorable. The hotels I was assigned to were usually of a high standard and the quality of food excellent but it could be a lonely existence as a stranger in a strange country unless the distributor accompanied you for the evening. The most memorable exception was a tour which included a five-day stint at an exhibition in Israel supporting a long established Agent, followed by a three-day sales tour in Egypt with a newly appointed Distributor. The Egyptian part of the trip was planned to give me a one-day break from business in Cairo to visit the Museum and The Pyramids of Giza. Ah! The best-laid plans .... As I approached the hotel venue on the last day of a slow-moving exhibition in Tel Aviv the MD of the Distributor put a hand on my shoulder. “What are you doing here?” I looked at him in surprise. “Today is the last day of the Exhibition. I’m not due to fly out until tomorrow.” “We can manage the exhibition stand today but you are not on duty. You are on a one day trip to Jerusalem. See, here is your ticket and Ashmeil will take you to the tour pick-up office and when you get back the company will provide transport to your hotel where you will join us for dinner, as thanks for your work supporting us this week.” I was dumbfounded but graciously accepted the MD’s offer. In general, my memory is atrocious but that day is burned indelibly into my grey cells. Emotions ran high that day, and still. To visit the Holocaust memorial and the eternal flame left with me with a heavy heart about man’s inhumanity to fellow men. I visited Christ’s supposed birthplace at the site of the stable by the side of the Inn, now entombed within a church. I walked in the steps of the Lord as our group traced His last journey, carrying the cross, on foot Via del Rosa, the Way of the Cross. The streets were crowded but there were clearly marked Stations of the Cross, points at which Jesus had stumbled or rested. Whether an avid believer or not nothing will erase those memories of walking the crowded, narrow streets of Jerusalem in the footsteps of the Lord. And two days later I had set a day aside during my short trip to Egypt to visit the pyramids. Who would swap places with me? As I said before: best-laid plans of mice and men... From landing in Cairo the following afternoon, the new distributor had set up so many appointments that there was hardly time to eat, let alone to visit any tourist sites. As we ended the programme of industrial visits late afternoon on the last scheduled day of business, we headed back into the city and drove past the pyramids on our right- hand side. I was craning my neck around to get a better view. “You have seen before,” he said. “No?” “No,” I replied. “I had hoped to book a tour but we have been very busy.” “That not good,” the distributor said, and yanked his car across two streams of oncoming traffic amid a cacophony of blaring horns, and then sped back to the entrance to the pyramids. My heart rate must have doubled following that maneuver. He drew up at the entrance gates which were in process of being locked. He jumped out of his car and there was an intense conversation with Duty Guard. There was much gesticulation amid raised voices and then, I swear, cash exchanged hands before I was a part of a Grand Prix around the pyramids. At each pyramid, we screeched to a halt in a cloud of dust and sand and I was ushered out of the car to take a photograph. If I remember correctly, we completed a circuit of the pyramids in about ten minutes. I don’t remember the Sphynx and really, the rest is a blur across the pixels in my eyes. And my photographic record is a disaster of poorly framed, out-of-focus shots on my manual 35mm camera. I was in touching distance of the great stones but never got to touch them. But would I change a thing about that trip? Never! Of such stuff are indelible memories made. I was grateful for the opportunities that came my way while doing a job I loved. ![]()
Meet the Author:
My formative years were experienced in and around Durham City. Married in 1964 to a girl I first met at the age of eleven, Pat and I spent many happy years in the North East before employment almost took us off to emigrate to Jo'berg, South Africa but plans were changed in the final weeks and instead the company moved me to Sussex. After more than twenty years in Sussex, then Hampshire, employment was again responsible for the move to beautiful rural Lancashire. Jimmy Crikey was born one rainy day, many years ago, during a family holiday in Great Yarmouth, to entertain my son and his new found friends for an hour or so. The story expanded over the following wet afternoons in the cramped confines of a beach tent, and more and more adventures were required to keep the children entertained. Many years later I decided to commit to the written word. Now retired I look forward to sharing The Amazing Adventures of Jimmy Crikey with a wider audience. These began as several short, twenty minute duration, stories but after an encouraging review from a major Publisher I brought them together in this offering and hope they will bring a sense of wonder and enjoyment to another generation. connect with the author: website ![]()

The reviled Scrooge is visited by three spirits who teach him the real meaning of life. The tale has been turned into rhyme, making this a delightful new twist to the story you know so well. Could it be a new addition to your Christmas traditions? Buy on Audible1 REVIEW By LAWonder10: This author has done a great job in presenting Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' in rhyme. It has a smooth rhyming rhythm, reminding one of the classic 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. The wording and characters are very much like the same ones, endeared by many, in Dickens's A Christmas Carol. The narration was good except a few of the character's "voices" were too raspy sounding. Other than a less than stellar use of "voices", the performance was good. The cover is very whimsical and eye catching. It was a great choice for this presentation. I give the rhyming tale, Five Stars. Three for the Narrator. I offer a Four and a Half Stars, overall rating.

LUCY SHIMMERS & THE PRINCE OF PEACE is Diamond’s 15th feature film and was produced completely in Utah early in 2020. “I can truly say that this is my favorite film I’ve ever made,” said Diamond. “The inspiration for the film came from a dream I had and then the story and the entire production came together absolutely seamlessly.” LUCY SHIMMERS tells the story of five-year-old Lucy and the incredible influence she has on those around her, especially hardened criminal Edgar. Lucy, with the help of her guardian angel, create miracles that change his heart and inspire a second chance in his life. The film features mostly local talent, including Shawn Stevens as Grandpa Jackson, Adam Hightower as James Shimmers, and Florencia Stevens as Isabelle Shimmers. In addition, the film stars well-known actor Vincent Vargas (THE MAYANS) and newcomer Scarlett Diamond in the title-role of Lucy. Scarlett Diamond just so happens to be the granddaughter of filmmaker Rob Diamond. “Granted I’m biased, but Scarlett was absolutely incredible. REVIEW By LAWonder10:
In this final book of the Braidy von Althuis series, action, violence, surprises, and unexpected finalization occurs. The von Althuis home has been transported to the Ukraine. The family desperately want to rescue Mr. von althuis and return home to America. The possibility of a peaceable outcome seems in every way, impossible! Mr. Boris von Althuis has been kidnapped by the djinn who has proclaimed herself Queen. She is so strong, there are none who dare defy her... None except the von Althuis family. The characters are well-developed and unusual. The action and events are easily visualized. The Title and Cover istoo dark to attract the attention of the "browser. The choice would be very good if the color were lighter and images clearer. What I didn't like is the notion that accountability was not a necessary part of obtaining peace. It is important to forgive past injustices by all and seek for peace. However, for justice to prevail, accountability must be addressed as well. peace can not be obtained without sacrifices and compromises. What I did like was the desire for peace and having not one individual enslaved to another. Obsession with power and greed is what corrupts. I offer a Four Star rating for the literary value of thi book. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. this is my honest review.

REVIEW By LAWonder10: This second book of "The Witches of Orkney" I would feel okay in letting older elementary children read. It wasn't as graphic and the language was milder. In this segment of the series, Abigail has developed a further attachment. She also is plagued by a book and the three bullies, plus the leader's mother. Thankfully, she still has her two best friends from the first book. However, a couple of new arrivals may become included in this small circle. This segment has a lot of mystery and creepy adventures. It is building into an very interesting culmination of events to occur in Book 3 ! The ending page is a strong lead into the third book. Although this series uses many mythical characters, it is very intriguing. The new characters introduced are not so bizarre but truly fantastical. They are presented well. I offer a Five Stars rating for this book. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. As mysteries deepen around her magic and just who her true parents are, Abigail becomes trapped in a race against time to undo one of her spells before she is kicked out of the coven forever! Rich in Norse mythology, The Blue Witch is the first of a fast-paced young reader series filled with magical spells, mysterious beasts, and witch-hungry spiders! REVIEW By LAWonder10: The Blue Witch is the first in the 'Witches of Orkney' series written for older elementary and Middle Grade age students. Due to some graphic violence, I woulld recommend Middle grade and YA. The Blue Witch was an exciting, fast moving beginning. It is filled with unique, fascinating creatures... Even the human kind. Abigail is not accepted by the other witchlings and feels very lonely. She was miraculously admitted to the coveted Tarkana Fortress Academy for witches. Here she would learn to develop her skills of witchery. Like all schools, it had three bullies determined to get her expelled. She mustn't allow it. One day while trying to avoid their cruelties by breaking rules to get to safety. While doing so, a buy hiding in the tree dropped down to protect her. Thus they both had to flee the grounds to safety... But outside the Academy, there was no safety near... The boy, Hugo, and Abigail began a friendship full of devastating danger, intrigue and unending adventure. They made amazing new discoveries and began the journey of finding their own "paths" of life. The book left the reader eager to delve into the next book, which I intend to do this week preceding Halloween! The Characters were very well developed and the scenes were easily visualized, the added cartoon-like illustrations by Johnathan S Made the imagery even clearer. I do feel for the age group, the occasional strong language needs to be discouraged, not included in children's literary works. I offer a Four and a Half Stars rating. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review. OTHER BOOKS in the SERIES: Alane Adams on Supporting Educators with #PointsForTeachers Teachers spend on average $400-$600 out of their own pockets to provide basic classroom supplies for their students ranging from pencils, dry erase markers, colored paper to glue sticks— a fact which is both heart wrenching and hard to fathom in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. As a children’s author and literacy advocate, I am a huge supporter of helping teachers succeed in the classroom. Last summer, while trolling on Twitter one night, I discovered a grassroots movement gaining momentum on social media. A young teacher in Texas, tired of having to spend money out of her own pocket to provide basic classroom supplies for her classroom had come up with the idea of posting her Amazon wishlist on social media, asking other teachers to help fund it and inviting them to do the same thing. This effort became known as #clearthelists and thousands of teachers began posting their lists and buying items off each other’s lists. The simple joy they felt at empowering themselves to solve this problem by helping fellow teachers spread like wildfire and it quickly became a movement. We quickly put our heads together at Rise Up, the literacy foundation I founded in 2008, and agreed we should try to help as many teachers as we could. Using humorous tweets, I quickly became known as the #gifqueen, and by the time fall had settled in, we had helped fund over 500 teacher wish lists. Since the global pandemic struck, we’ve seen a surge in requests for pandemic-related Back-To-School needs with teachers asking for remote learning tools such as document cameras and new laptops. Classroom needs are changing as well with a need for individualized containers to keep students supplies separate, along with increased sanitation supplies, face masks, hand sanitizer—all this is on top of their normal requirements. We at Rise Up tried to think of new ways to engage and help teachers meet the challenges ahead. I realized I had an enormous stockpile of unused credit card reward points sitting around that could easily be converted into Amazon dollars. Using reward points is easy on Amazon—all you have to do is register your participating rewards credit card—American Express, Citibank, Chase, and Discover are just a few they accept—and when you get to check out, you simply choose “use reward points” and the points value is deducted off your total. This inspired us to expand our efforts to help teachers clear their lists with a movement we call #PointsForTeachers. The goal is to educate individuals who would like to help but maybe don’t know how they can make an impact. We hope to encourage them to look at those unused reward points that are sitting idle on their credit card statements and reach out and find a teacher to help. It’s super simple and easy to make a big impact. All you have to do is follow these steps: · Register your card on Amazon at amazon.com/shopwithpoints. · Search for a teacher to help on Twitter using #pointsforteachers or #clearthelists. · Shop for items on the teacher’s list. · Use your points to pay at checkout! To kick the program off we pledged 1 million reward points toward teacher’s wish lists. To date we’ve helped 200 teachers get back to school with essential items and we have many more to go before we run out of points. To donate your points, just go to JustGiving.com and search for Rise Up Foundation. With everything that is asked of teachers during these challenging times, now more than ever, they need our support to get them the items they need to make a difference in the lives of their students. Won’t you join us in making a difference in the life of a teacher and their classroom today? REVIEW for Braidy.... and the Gullible Ghost Hunter By LAWonder10:
Briady's close friend, Kara, is someone who he van trust and won't "freak out" over situations with his crazy family. She is the only one allowed inside the house, other than his "qutrky" family... That s, until a visitor came to town. His grandmother couldn't bear the loss of her son, Rolo, so used her Fae magic and he is still dead, but exits s though he was human. He was confined to their house for many months on probation. Now Uncle Rolo goes out occasionally but is breaking the rules! Braidy doesn't want to be a "snitch" but this can bring trouble. With the arrival of an unexpected visitor, Uncle Rolo is stirring up more trouble. Braidy and Kara goes to an unusual source for answers. this just creates more headaches! How is this all going to end? This second book of the series is an entertaining tale in the unusul series. It is great for the Halloween part of the Season. This book's setting is at Halloween time. However, it is a good series for Middle Grade aged students who wants a "fun", slightly spooky, light mystery. It does emphasize honesty. It can be a good teaching tool. The characters were creatively developed, although somewhat difficult to visualize. The scenes wee portrayed well. The Title and cover were a good "fit". It was a little outrageous for me, but on a literary level, I offer a Three and a Half Stars rating. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.

Writing takes practice. Lots and lots of practice. There are people out there with natural talent, sure, but as long as you have the tools and the proper know how, anyone can start taking fiction writing to a place that allows you to actually finish your book. Over the years, I’ve created a list of checks and to-dos that I use to make sure my writing is polished. I am a one-man band of publishing (it seems that’s the main catch of being an indie publisher!), so that means that I need to have a streamlined system to make sure my books are printed at perfection. Here’s what I’ve learned!
A Schedule is to Publishing as Water is to Living In other words… essential. Every well-oiled machine has several working parts that fire at just the right time. It’s the same with writing and publishing a book. Without some kind of structure to keep you on track, it’s easy to just… not write your book. Often, I hear new writers say, “Oh, I’ve been working on my manuscript for five years.” In some cases, these things take time. However, without a proper schedule it’s easy to put off writing your manuscript… forever. After having published five novels under my own imprint, I’m now a hyper-efficient machine, but it was not always that way. Start at the End When creating a publishing schedule for yourself, start at the end. This is the basis for any large-scale media project. What day do you want your book to be published? Then, work back from there. When do you need to have your book trailer done by to make your launch day? You can work backward from the launch date and include things on your publishing schedule like sending the book out to editors, compiling your reviewer list, writing a press release, and compiling the book. As you work back, you’ll make it to the very first step which is… starting your manuscript. Remember, every author is different, and your writing pace, available time, and size of your novel will determine what your schedule looks like. Be firm and flexible with yourself (which sounds like a paradox), and you’ll have a finished book before you know it. Not only will it be done, but you’ll be absolutely tickled that you did it! ![]()

Sebastian and Melissa would never forget their arrival at the house called Hadlows. The long drive through the neglected park and woodland, the lake glimpsed through trees, the house, with its "thousand windows"looking down on them and the great hall, empty but for the portraits covering the walls. Hadlows held a secret, of that they were sure. REVIEW By LAWonder10: The continuing adventures of Sebastian and Melissa continue. I enjoyed this book even more than the first because it had fewer characters in it to visualize. It was much easier picturing the characters and scenes. At first the two children were uneasy about staying in a house with an older couple they didn't know. They would also be leaving their housekeeper, cook, nanny behind. Their parents said she needed a vacation , too. The house looked in need of repair and kind of "creepy". The two were pleasantly surprised with both the couple and the house. Was it really haunted? Thee elderly gentleman didn't seem to think so.. The children's hearts were touched when they were told the story of a former resident. Was ther anything they could do? I really like this series because it deals with overcoming fears and self doubt. It also addresses sacrifices for good. The Narrator. Kim Bretton, once again, gives an fantastic performance in her delivery of this novel. The characters and scenes are easily visualized and feel real. I offer a Five Stars rating for this book and narration. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. this is my honest review.

REVIEW by LAWonder10:
This was a very well-written and excellent reading for any youth, but is directed at older elementary age and early teens. However, i am certain the whole family would enjoy it. It is mostly true! The characters and scenes were both portrayed well. the author took liberties in adding some adventure and suspense which enhanced the tale. It is advisable to read the "Author's Noes" at the end of the story. This is based on an actual events during Worl War ll. It centers mostly on one family forced to flee Germany and the Nazi's. I offer a Five Stars rating for this book. *This book was gifted me with no pressure for a positive review. This is my honest review.

Why write historical fiction for young people? By Nancy McDonald, author of Boy from Berlin and One Boy’s War
“Boy from Berlin brings history to life with a compelling storyline, full of twists and turns.” “A gripping adventure wrapped in a crucial lesson in 20th Century history.” “Spies, Nazis, a family in peril, all seen through the innocent eyes of an observant 8-year-old. This is a wonderful adventure that touches upon some important 20C history.” When I first got the idea to write a novel based on my husband Käfer’s flight from Germany at the start WWII – and to tell it from his eight year-old point of view – I never dreamed it would get the enthusiastic reaction it has. In fact, I really questioned if it was something that would appeal to today’s children. I was committed to telling the story. It’s a gripping tale. Käfer is living a comfortable life in Berlin. His father is an exceptionally talented aeronautical engineer who has invented a game-changing fuel pump that could win the war for the Nazis. But when Hitler comes to power the family flees in the dead of night, the Gestapo on their heels. What Käfer doesn’t know, what his parents have kept from him, is that his family is Jewish. Something he comes to suspect is one of the reasons they must leave. But it’s a story about more than a race to stay one step ahead of the Nazis. There’s an issue that plagues Käfer: Why won’t my parents talk about whether or not we’re Jewish? Why is it wrong to be Jewish? And is there a safe haven for me anywhere? These are questions that dog a lot of youngsters today – particularly refugee and immigrant kids – and they’re looking for answers. Yet at the time I was writing Boy from Berlin, bookstores were filled with stories about vampires and wizards and mythical creatures. Would there be an audience for my historical novels? Would they resonate with children today? Then a friend send me an article from the New York Times. It was a fascinating piece about how middle-grade and YA readers were turning to historical fiction set during WWII. Why? To start, there are very definable good guys and bad guys. And kids like that. Especially when the good guys come out on top. But for today’s children, there’s an added attraction. WWII was a conflict that swept young people up, either as members of the resistance or as refugees, forcing them to grow up quickly. As Käfer did. I think that historical fiction has the ability to move children in a way that other forms of literature don’t. And, if it’s done well, it can teach them very modern-day lessons about how to survive against seemingly insurmountable odds – and even succeed. ![]()

Five Things to Know Before You Begin Creating a Fantasy World
Once upon a time a young teenage girl wanted to be like Tolkien or C.S Lewis or J.K Rowling or any of the other numerous famous authors who created vast and amazing storyworlds. But guess what? You are not other authors. As much as I love Harry Potter and would love to be the next J.K Rowling, that is not my destiny. You are you. I have my own story to tell, my own magical plot to create. I hold myself back when I choose to try and match up with other authors or do “another wizard story.” Create a backstory. Middle Earth is one of my favorite layered storyworlds because of how vast and detailed Tolkien made it. The language and history blows my mind as an author. I cannot even imagine having the brain to be that creative. The key to creating any storyworld is backstory. Regardless if you choose to use all the information in your books, choose to write the backstory of your world. I spent countless hours in high school asking questions about Sindaleer, such as why did the Guardians live in a tower in the middle of the water? What celebrations and holidays and remembrances were special to the Sindaleerian folk? Who did they consider outcasts? Who did they fear? The answers to these questions eventually led to small subplots for “The Broken Prince” and “The Crownless King.” Use real life. I grew up on Narnian stories. One reason Narnia resonated with so many readers of its time was that C.S Lewis used real life as a base for his world. Children during wartime was something his young readers could relate to and identify with. They understood the fear and the need for courage. Don’t talk about something you don’t understand—talk about what you know. I based Sindaleer terrain off of my home state of West Virginia as well as some of Florida. I then did massive research on vikings and combined it with my love of Native American history. Dare to be unique. The Giver is known for helping launch the dystopian genre. After reading the book in high school, I fell in love with what Lois Lowry had done. Ms Lowry didn’t write and worry about whether her book was current or not: she wrote what needed to be written, going on to impact many lives and creating a launching pad for the dystopian genre. It’s easy to fall prey to the cliche. It’s easy to do what’s already been done. Jackaby from William Ritter (one of my favorite storyworlds ever created), combines aspects of Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes and other popular stories into something still very fresh and unique that holds true to Mr. Ritter’s writing voice, not a copycat for previous authors. Create what needs to be written, not what’s already been done. Don’t rush the process. Whether it’s about the writing process or the character creation or world building or creating a new language, always and continually ask a lot of questions and don’t rest until you find the answers. Be okay with taking your time. Be okay with not meeting goals because you have more to accomplish than first thought. We learn until we die, and life is a journey of learning. Some people say it took Tolkien nearly 57 years to complete the creation of Middle Earth. So in saying that, I only have 50 more years to go. ;) ![]()

GUARDIAN OF THE SKY REALMS by Gerry Huntman
RELEASE DATE: 9/1/20 GENRE: Upper Middle-Grade / Lower YA / Fantasy SUMMARY: Maree Webster—an "almost-emo" from the western suburbs of Sydney—hates school, has few friends, and is obsessed with angels and fallen angel stories. Life is boring until she decides to steal a famous painting from a small art gallery that has been haunting her dreams: swirling reds, grays and oranges of barely discernible winged figures. There, she meets a stranger who claims to know her and stumbles into a world where cities float in the sky, and daemons roam the barren, magma-spewing crags of the land far below. And all is not well—Maree is turning into something she loves but at the same time, fears. Most fearful of all is the prospect of losing her identity—what makes her Maree, and more importantly, what makes her human. Guardian of the Sky Realms takes the reader on a journey through exotic fantasy lands, as well as across the globe, from Sydney to Paris, from the Himalayas to Manhattan. At its heart, it is a novel about transformation. Book two of the series will be released in 2021. BUY LINKS: Meerkat Press | Amazon | Barnes & Noble
The Painting AD 2015
It was a balmy night but Maree shivered, buttoning up her coat. It was fear. Not for something specific, but the unknown--the back lanes of the Rocks were dark and menacing at midnight. This was one of the oldest parts of Sydney and many of the narrow buildings she silently passed were over two hundred years old. In the old days, footpads and other villains frequented the narrow byways. They killed for a few shillings. The history of the area was tangible; you could smell it, taste it, and every shadow seemed to form into a knife-wielding psychopath. Maree kept reminding herself that she had an overactive imagination as she continued down Kendell Lane, looking for No. 42. Still, she glanced over her shoulder every few seconds. “There,” she whispered, when she spotted the rusty number in the dim light. The sign underneath it read: Azimuth Gallery. Viewings by appointment only .... Not this night. Maree made sure no one was in sight. She pulled out a pair of stiff wires and clumsily picked the old lock, following the instructions of a dubious website she had looked up the previous night. It took a while, but she won the struggle when she heard the tell-tale click. She quickly entered the old building and shut the door. She pulled out a pocket torch and flashed it around to get her bearings. It was, in some ways, scarier in the gallery than in the lanes, as the paintings in the shadows appeared to come to life, shifting as the torch flickered by, the eyes of abstract figures seemingly following her. She shivered again, wandering into the next room, picking up her pace as if to avoid the gaze of the phantoms behind her. Her torchlight almost immediately found the painting she was after. Wings in Despair. The picture she saw on the web; the magnificent work of art she had to have. This was not going to be theft for profit—this was for her.She had been dreaming about the painting for weeks, the swirling reds, grays and oranges of barely discernible winged figures; angels perhaps, but the subject matter wasn’t angelic. There was grief and death in it. She needed to study it alone, to absorb the artist’s impression, to feel the bumps of paint under her fingertips, to grasp the complete meaning of the work. Maree held her breath and approached the painting. It was larger than she thought, almost four-foot square. The colors were also richer, more vivid, and the winged man and . . . yes, woman! were more evident. She was in awe, frozen with wonder before it. “A beautiful work, no?” came a deeply masculine voice from behind her. She started in surprise, but she didn’t move an inch. She was frozen with fear. The voice came again, this time a little closer. “Don’t worry. I’m a stranger in this gallery as well. I too have an . . . affinity with the painting.” A cold sweat bead ran down Maree’s neck. She found the courage to turn around. A tall man stood before her, no more than five feet away. He had short-cropped hair—light, but the exact color was unclear in the shadows. His eyes were pale, perhaps gray; his face was thin but his body seemed full and fit. It was hard to tell his age; perhaps in his early twenties, possibly older. “I suppose you are wondering why I am here?” Maree’s voice was weak, still with fear. “I . . . I suppose so . . .” “I also wanted to see the painting. I have looked upon it before but never tire of viewing the captured emotions on the canvas.” He slipped past Maree and came within a few feet of Wings in Despair. “Do you mind?” he asked, pointing to her torch. She complied, standing next to the stranger, and illuminated the painting. The mysterious visitor’s voice mellowed, almost breaking with emotion. “This is the story of Alanar, Guardian of the Northern Sky Realm, and his share-heart, Mirriam. They were Protectors and fought the daemons of the Fire Lands valiantly, never allowing the enemy to taint the Homelands. Protectors always work in pairs, as a team.” The stranger started to cry, not vocally, just allowing the tears to slowly flow down his cheeks. “One day a stray arrow dug deep into Mirriam’s breast, piercing her heart. Alanar was devastated, and he caught her as she fell and carried her in his flight to the Homelands. “This painting captures the moment when Mirriam’s body was caught. It faithfully portrays the agony of Alanar, his yellow-tipped wings rippling in the wind as he concludes his terrible descent. The swirling colors reflect the awful light of the Fire Lands but they also depict Alanar’s darkened heart. I look upon this work and I cannot but weep.” His words rang true to Mirriam. How could this be? she asked herself, for this was but an artist’s fantasy; and yet she now realized why she was drawn to the painting. There was some inherent truth on the canvas. It said something to her that she needed. She also began to weep. He turned his gaze to her. “You feel this too?” She could only nod. Words were too difficult at that moment. “And why?” She shrugged her shoulders. She still couldn’t speak. “Come with me.” Maree turned to the stranger. She saw compassion in his face, and yet they only met a few minutes ago. Maree wanted to instantly reply “yes” but all she could do was stare at him quizzically. He laughed while he cried. “Look at the painting again.” She did.
